Applies not just to database change-data capture (CDC), but also event-sourcing.
Re:The History and Legacy of Visual Basic on Thursday May 15, 2025 @05:31PM (#43999518)
I was lucky to get in on the _Thunder_ VB 1.0 beta and, as an "expert" QuickBASIC developer at the time, was just blown away by how easy it was to create a Windows application (which previously was _very_ difficult).

I remember submitting a stock charting application that Michael Risse and Nevet Basker used to love showing during the VB 1.0 launch demos (and road shows), because they could plot the chart of Microsoft (up and up) vs. IBM (not so up).

For me, VB 3.0 was peak Visual Basic, and I was on to doing Java stuff by the time VB 6.0 was released.

Fun times.

Re:My free side project: 600+ UI Components with Code Editor on Wednesday April 10, 2024 @03:54PM (#39995067)
Your FAQ mentions "free version you can only use it for your personal purpose", yet the license for the components on GitHub is MIT. Can you clarify what exactly is free and what you're selling?
Re:Ask HN: Who is hiring? (March 2024) on Friday March 01, 2024 @06:22PM (#39568036)
These positions are all labeled as "Hybrid" (2-3 days on-site). Could you clarify that these are 100% remote? If not, please change your post to reflect this.
Re:Ask HN: Who is hiring? (January 2024) on Wednesday January 03, 2024 @06:42PM (#38861313)
Is this actually a fully remote position? The job posting does not say clearly that it is. It says "remote" at the top, but in the posting it only says "This job operates in a professional office environment or remotely as needed/required."

Are you hiring folks who live in California? If so, you're missing the (required by law) salary range. (As well as other states who have similar laws.)

I dread upgrading my 2020 iMac, because the screen is still gorgeous, but there's no way to use the screen as a secondary monitor (or is there?).

I find the Studio Display to be 2X what I'd be willing to pay for a monitor—for me the Thunderbolt Display was the best: reasonable price and great quality.

Re:Java 21: What’s New? on Monday August 14, 2023 @08:07PM (#37128461)
Yes, but: https://twitter.com/nipafx/status/1676908785313492992

"JDK21 is a version, for which many vendors offer support."

tl;dr: the Java version is not what gets "long-term support", it's a specific runtime JDK released by some Java vendor, e.g., Oracle, Eclipse Adoptium, Azul, Microsoft, Amazon (Coretto), etc.

Re:Ask HN: Proven front end stack for fast iteration on Sunday June 11, 2023 @05:06PM (#36285684)
Why not htmx? If your front-end is truly a front-end and there’s not a lot of state needed in the FE, htmx.org might be a great fit.
Re:Defining a new HTTP method: HTTP Search (2021) on Sunday May 28, 2023 @05:23PM (#36107921)
> POST or PUT to a resource representing the search, then you’re free to redirect and subsequently GETs of this resource can be cached.

But that only means that specific instance of the search query is cacheable, not the search query itself, no? I presume the POST would create a new identifier for the resource, so that yes, that specific resource is cacheable. (Even if the server says "oh, I've just seen this POSTed query, let me return the same resource ID", another client will still have to POST to the server, a non-cacheable action.)

The idea of cacheable isn't just by the server, but by anything in between the client and the resource. By using QUERY, the query itself can be cached.

Re:Ask HN: Who is hiring? (May 2023) on Tuesday May 02, 2023 @08:48PM (#35796311)
Sorry, I didn't see anything at the top regarding laws that require disclosure of pay ranges. Did I miss it? Is this not relevant to the postings?
Re:Ask HN: Who is hiring? (May 2023) on Monday May 01, 2023 @12:20PM (#35775030)
I don't see pay ranges listed for the open roles. If hiring in California you have to disclose a pay range in the job listing.
Re:Ask HN: Who is hiring? (May 2023) on Monday May 01, 2023 @12:17PM (#35774986)
I don't see pay range(s) listed for the open roles. Not sure how many employees you have, but at least in California, if you have 15 or more, you have to disclose a pay range in the job listing. Colorado has a similar laws. New York's takes effect in September 2023 (and applies to 4 or more employees).
Re:Show HN: A low-code platform to create pricing cards on Sunday April 16, 2023 @03:38PM (#35593557)
Asking me for my Stripe API key is a non-starter (regardless of what you "promise").
Re:Samsung to cut chip production after profits plunge 96% on Saturday April 08, 2023 @05:16PM (#35497720)
Guess that plan to "organically" reduce production[0] and try to gain market share didn't work out so well.

I'd love to replace Zoom, but as a trainer/coach, I use it only on a weekly basis with multiple people, I guess you'd call them "strangers" (though they might be "regulars"). I'm unclear about how the pricing works in this situation, i.e., what does CoScreen consider a "user"?
Beta testing "Thunder" (code name for VB 1.0) was one of the most exciting things in my career. As a long time QuickBASIC user, looking longingly at those C++ developers writing Windows apps, I was floored when I got my hands on VB. I was finally able to create a graphical Windows app without having to learn C++ (which I later did, because I wanted to write VBX controls).

I did what I often do with new languages: write a stock charting and technical analysis application. Microsoft loved it and asked me if they could use it for demonstrations. They showed it off during the VB road show because they could show Microsoft's stock (up) vs. IBM's (down).

The early VB community was fun to be a part of and VB3 was the pinnacle for me. VB4 was a mess and it took until VB6 to finally get things right again, but at that point I had given up on C++ and was writing Java applets.

I did a talk that dives into some of these topics, aimed at developers: https://youtu.be/SdvmMPcXK0Q
Re:Ask HN: Learning Test Based Programming on Friday January 20, 2023 @03:52PM (#34459761)
Best way to learn (as with most things) is by doing. As mentioned, TDD by Example (Kent Beck) is a good start. Pairing or coding in a group ("mob programming" or "ensembling" as it's called) is even better than doing it on your own.

You can also watch me build a complete small game from scratch using TDD here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LjYKzodYuoE&list=PLBHctPrH7Z...

Re:Ask HN: Does every software project require a refactor? on Monday January 16, 2023 @02:20PM (#34404431)
Yes. Continuously.

There's 3 times to refactor:

1. When you're trying to add a new feature ("prepare").

2. When the new functionality has been added ("tidy").

3. When you're trying to understand the code ("clarify").

The problem is when refactoring is seen as a separate activity from coding. It shouldn't be: it is a _part_ of the coding activity.

Re:Ask HN: How to learn design and UI/UX on Tuesday December 27, 2022 @03:17PM (#34153222)
Highly recommend Stephanie Stimac's book: "Design for Developers" https://www.manning.com/books/design-for-developers
I have a different question: why do folks create a username+password based AuthN system on their own, instead of leveraging OAuth and letting someone else deal with the hard part of managing passwords, resets, etc. Or use a service like FusionAuth or Auth0, or Keycloak, et al? With Spring Boot + Spring Security's OAuth, all the AuthN work is done by the framework and I only need specify some configuration parameters (client IDs, secret, etc.) and I don't deal with anything else.

Now User Profiles as a first-class thing would be nice (I really do not want to reimplement managing profiles), but there's a lot more variation there. Though some out-of-the-box basics would be nice: name, nickname, time zone, preferred contact info, etc.

Re:Open Sourcing Event Ruler on Tuesday September 06, 2022 @03:27PM (#32742046)
Nice that this is open-sourced, but would've been useful for clean up work to be done before that happened, e.g., non-standard directory layout (which they admit is a known mistake—so why was it released?).
A 15% cut is quite a lot, and I'm not seeing sufficient benefit from your service to warrant it.

Also, highly recommend you have someone review the text copy, it does not sound like it was written by a native English speaker.

Re:Ask HN: What are some good alternatives to Heroku? on Thursday August 25, 2022 @02:29PM (#32597968)
You can probably find answers in the Heroku threads, but the short answer is:

Re:Ask HN: Can you share your experience with sleep apnea? on Sunday August 21, 2022 @03:09PM (#32543375)
I wish I had good news, but...

I was diagnosed with sleep apnea, not because of any obvious problem, but because my psych wanted to put me on drugs that might make me drowsy, so he wanted to make sure I was OK in that regard. A sleep study showed that I had mild to moderate sleep apnea.

I spent the following two years trying various things: turbinate reduction surgery, and 6-9 months adjusting my CPAP to no avail. No matter what we did, my AHI never went below 20. In fact, all of that actually caused severe insomnia that took me another 3 or 4 months to finally resolve.

I continue to look for ideas and new technology, but I'm not willing to do anything surgical. These days I just deal with it by getting at least 9 hours of time in bed (not 9 hours of sleep, because the result is more like 6 hours of actual sleep). I still wake up 3-4 times per night, but it's just enough—along with coffee—to continue to function.

Re:Ask HN: Do You Yahoo? on Wednesday August 10, 2022 @02:57PM (#32416833)
I find the Yahoo Finance News to be awful. So many ads are mixed in with news stories that vary from recent to days old, with no rhyme or reason as to the order. Marketwatch is better in this regard.

The specific financial information from /quote, etc. are quite good, but the news specific for an equity are filled with useless automated news from Zacks, Investor's Business Daily, and (sadly) Motley Fool (gone so downhill over the past 5 years).

Re:Less than 1% of Netflix subscribers are playing its games on Tuesday August 09, 2022 @08:10PM (#32406357)
This. There's no marketing at all that I've seen. In fact, it's confusing, because I have a Netflix subscription, but thought their games required a _separate_ subscription. Totally wrong mental model that could have been easily corrected with some kind of marketing (besides emailing, cuz I don't read their emails).
I worked at 2 of them in my career and left the stifling, closed environment to go back to my first love: teaching folks how to enjoy coding more.

I now teach people the way I think is best, and pick and choose who I work with. It's been over five years since I left, and it's the best thing I ever did.
