I figured this out a while ago and I do it as a challenge - how can I incorrectly pass the test - probably there are more of us doing this than you estimate? We could be in the majority (unlikely I know)

I'm also the odd one out, so many enterprises moving to spark on databricks.

9/10 times they would really mess it up and just go "whatever if says on the screen, go there" or something similar :)
Re:Writing a software book and making over $100k on Monday July 13, 2020 @10:39AM (#23821227)
I've just signed a contract to write a book and I get an advance and then 10% (goes up to 12/15% if more are sold).

One major reason is that I am more likely to finish it and get it done than if I rely on it myself.

Another reason is that I want to be known for one niche, this will help and if that works out then I could likely self-publish and keep more of the profit.

It is slightly more nuanced than I want as much cash as possible for this thing.

Re:A tale of latency and broken windows on Wednesday July 01, 2020 @10:22AM (#23701634)
This reminds me of a system I worked on, the devs all developed locally with all the services but in prod the services were on different hosts and the performance was terrible.

This reminds me of the system I worked on, the devs had promised a 3-tier system but delivered a 2-tier system so management had them add a middle layer and the performance was terrible.

This reminds me of the system I worked on, the devs decided a lockless architecture was the way for better performance but with the limited threads we had at the time, apart from the few people who kept hold of a thread until they were done, the performance was terrible.

This reminds me of the system I worked on, the database design was a serious bottleneck but no one wanted to fix that so the app tier tried to change their queries, the performance was terrible.

I don't know why people spend so much time optimizing the wrong thing - it happens over and over again!

I love this, find it fascinating but this isn't right:

"which is historically interesting only because it shows the direction Microsoft's product lines had shifted - suddenly NT was the line where new UI developments were being made and 9x was getting hand-me-downs."

win me was the breeding ground for things that made it into win 2003, things like sfc, msconfig etc - all the utilities went into me first and then to 2003.

Re:Twitter Will Allow Employees to Work at Home Forever on Tuesday May 12, 2020 @04:36PM (#23159386)
Ding ding, we have a winner now for the remaining 99.9% of corporations to follow suit and society will be positively impacted.

Remote working as a norm is the breakthrough that society needs.

Time spent with family, commuting cancelled, train, roads, busses, tubes reduced - if it doesn’t happen now, the next pandemic will.

My go to question used to be “what’s the best thing and then the worse thing about working here”, every time I used it I have got jobs I wasn’t good enough for but the feedback was that I was really motivated.

This stuff really does work, I don’t really need it now because i generally find roles through my network.

I agree with this, I can pinpoint the one question I didn’t answer correctly in one interview once. I was doing well and passed through everything until it came to hr asking about a 5 month break and why I left a company without another job. The hr lady prompted me with what to say “was it so you could do some travelling?” And I replied that I just needed a break and took some time off. She prompted that I must have done some studying, again I just said no and that was it.

My answer didn’t fit the social norms so I was canned.

This is a one off shock, they don’t need to do this
If they missed out then the ceo should resign, it is basic business sense
I think any company that lays off people at this time are scum, they should be embarrassed and rescind this.

There are loans available in the us and uk to keep people employed.

I won’t use stack overflow for the rest of may, it isn’t much but fuck them.

They know the people they let go can’t get another job at the moment.

Re:New 13-inch MacBook Pro on Monday May 04, 2020 @10:15AM (#23068300)
I will never buy a dell again, had an XPS 9550 (£2.7k 32gb ram, top of the range) - they had a chip in to detect a valid dell power adapter and that went so they wanted over 600 to replace the motherboard.

I bought a macbook and use the dell charger (udb-c) to charge my macbook.

Re:Why Restaurants Are So Fucked on Saturday May 02, 2020 @05:40AM (#23050588)
Yes let’s get back to the good old days where the men went to the pub and any bloody women could go to the saloon bar .... arrrgh!
This says that Facebook have built a test facility and if they detect the virus then they do a full genome sequence. Facebook are doing genome sequencing, this seems less than ideal.

Lets fight the good fight for freedom from spam, or just use your spam folder.

He just comes across as an arsehole, this sort of nonsense has stopped me listening to whatever else he has to say.

What we all do with spam is ignore it.

Yeah, every time I’ve heard this story support have always fixed it, at least the first time per account
I’d be pissed off, if I have a business the last thing you want customers and suppliers knowing you are struggling
Mechanical Turk?
yeah i prefer civet coffee myself
My nespresso coffee capsules went from £22 to £30 so it isn't so much the delivery delays but the increase in price which is annoying.

The way I like to think about a well documented system is:

- unit tests show how well the developer understood the requirements at the time they wrote the code - git commit history shows who and when something changed (probably assuming history not rewritten :) ) - git history can be more informative, if and it is a big if, the developers write enough information and not just “changed code” type comments - in-line comments are for “why” - explaining things that look odd or go against standards or best practices, or “I’m doing this now like this, when x is available use that” - notes to help you and others - wiki is for higher level “why” to help people understand the code, where there is a lot of complexity I really like the idea of a “book of the xx” like the book of the runtime here: https://www.hanselman.com/blog/TheBookOfTheRuntimeTheInterna...

Why put Bloomberg’s face on a meatball?

I keep thinking about this:https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/akwjb4/theres-a-mike-bloomberg-in-my-meatballsIs it just someone having a laugh or some subtle subliminal advertising, “hmmm meatballs nice, Bloomberg nice, better vote for him, get more meatballs”
