I happen to think Western music and culture peaked through those 3 decades though. I'm talking more film, TV and music not literature.

So it's the passing of real talent without replacement. I think we live in a pretty dead culture now. Just my opinion of course.

Re:Patrick Stewart has died on Thursday October 29, 2026 @04:05PM (#50295007)
It absolutely sucks to be a millennial (me) because literally everyone I love in music and culture came of age in the 70s-90s and they're all dying. Ozzy was awful for me. But over the next decade, it's only going to get worse.

I was more of a Shatner movies Star Trek kid but I remember watching The Next Generation when it first came out and liked it. RIP to a legend.

Liz Warren is a fascist who would use every police state tactic you hate on her opposition.
My comment should not have been flagged.

You will fail to achieve anything if you mentally approach these things from a partisan view (like all the comments, general public). ICE should not be running surveillance Ops on Left activists or immigrants and the FBI should not run surveillance Ops on Right activists, J6 rioters.

The tools violate all of our rights full stop. Please don't support this garbage again when Dems sweep into power, trying to debank ppl for X tweets etc.

Yes! I lost my entire career because I wouldn't participate in the Covid production. Dems will cheer on surveillance tech embedded with law enforcement when they view the target as their political opponents.

I've made this post before. I just like to remind people. And you have no idea how cruel the salesperson was. He was basically demanding I install the app to complete the lease agreement. I had to take an Ativan after the ordeal.
The powerful are aware of this. Forget having the money to hire an attorney, the general public wouldn't even know who to contact, what kind of attorney etc to defend them in these cases.
It's a completely lost cause. For example, when you agree to Mazdas TOS for the connected services app, you give them permission to sell your driving data to 3rd parties including law enforcement and insurance companies.

I said no so I'm not allowed to have remote start. I'm a bad cog. Punish me.

As usual. It's important to recognize that these discoveries are only possible through human prompting. Or am I wrong? If you gave me unlimited Claude tokens I couldn't discover shi#.

Is this why Wikipedia isn't working?
We're going down a dark path. An uncivilized one. It will eventually touch people far more innocent than the criminal in this case.
I knew as usual on HN the most logical and accurate comment would be at the problem and greyed out.

If the people are too stupid to navigate democracy while reading, seeing and hearing what other people say online, even malicious actors/disinformation etc then they shouldn't be allowed to vote.

Re:The last time my family was replaced by technology on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @02:56PM (#49912855)
I just wanted to point something out. I hear people say the AI revolution is the biggest one since the industrial revolution. I think it's the biggest revolution since the one that just preceded us, the information (computer) age. So we're still going fairly in order revolution wise.
Re:Google ending ChromeOS support two years early on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @01:06PM (#49896579)
You go teach tech for $60k a year where the median rent is $4k for a 1 bedroom. Exactly
Re:Google ending ChromeOS support two years early on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @11:12AM (#49894728)
My students Chromebooks can't run python online. 1 tab. Ad riddled. IT won't install ad blocker. The misery so many of us deal with. I'm happy has to know. Depressing.

I might just make my own html editor with GitHub

Re:The Copilot+ PC brand is dead on Saturday September 26, 2026 @12:32PM (#49858115)
I pay for chatgpt and Gemini and I don't know why because you are correct.

The funny part? I'm afraid to cancel gemeni because maybe Google will retaliate by closing my Google account lol?

I'm kidding. BRO, no school would be running the first (imo) commercial desktop still in the year 2026. The machine I cited was released in 1976!
It's not DOS but my private school still uses an IBM 5100 to do payroll and record attendance.

Re:Bill Gates tries to install MovieMaker on Monday September 07, 2026 @12:42PM (#49600258)
This is a good and bit surprising one. I have a hard time believing the CEO of Palantir has this many generational points I agree with, Zuck too, but I do.

I still reboot my desktop daily lol. I was born anti-tab pro fresh start
Re:Nitter is unarchived and will continue on Sunday September 06, 2026 @03:47PM (#49590154)
This is true. Why would anyone not establishment liberal go to BlueSky? I'm playing with Nostr but these decentralized social media platforms are a no go for 90% of people. Now I'm wondering why we're talking about Twitter or political social media in general in 2026. That's long over with. Move on.
Re:Project Xanadu: Even More Hindsight on Friday September 04, 2026 @03:22PM (#49569040)
Excellent points. When Nelson was building Xanadu in the 60s-80s there was no expectation that the user would be the product. Which we have today, things like Google workspace, Office, YouTube, social media etc letting the user use software for "free" in the sense that their is no visible micro traction but an invisible harvesting of your habits and interests to sell to advertisers or whoever wants to buy it. Nelson simply didn't predict this.

I'm gonna use chat gpt in a few months when getting a new lease. I'll know in real time if I'm getting robbed.
People fall for "think of the children!" so let's also try "think of the elderly!". We're a society that ruthlessly opposes individual responsibility and individual outcomes.
Re:It takes 5 cloud services to hear my doorbell on Monday August 31, 2026 @04:53AM (#49507246)
I prefer burglars more than cameras.
So someone said something I think sarcastically that deserves a fresh comment.

"From now on all kids will become linux natives. The decade of the linux desktop is coming!"

I teach technology K-8. So I have a front row seat to observing how the next generation navigates this new digital wasteland. Due to the aggressive censorship and locked nature of their computing experience at school, think Go Guardian, they have become experts at using Google workspace to make art, comics, communicate with one another in class etc.

My point, the next generation really will become adept at using Linux IF the system is so locked down that it's all that's available. Humans adapt to their environment, no matter how harsh.
