Re:Welcome to the Old Internet Again on Saturday October 17, 2020 @03:52PM (#24812679)
that’s revisionist. usenet was already dead. google extended its life, in fact.
Re:Welcome to the Old Internet Again on Saturday October 17, 2020 @03:52PM (#24812670)
why would you need a usenet similar service? usenet still exists and the barrier is, as you say, high enough.
I don’t see a problem with it. It says more about the comment author than it does about the article. If he (commenter) wants to out himself as a knowitallogist, so be it?
Re:“35-50% of clicks on Reddit Ads are fraudulent” on Saturday October 10, 2020 @04:12PM (#24741526)
> Advertisers shouldn't know what I like, they should only know that a certain device with a certain ID likes X,Y topics.

That is in fact what advertisers know. It’s the aggregators that know who you are, not the advertisers.

Re:Sonos is spying on me (and you) on Sunday October 04, 2020 @02:49PM (#24681342)
thought this would be useless griping of sonos that has existed for years now. no, this is new and valuable information. glad i got rid of sonos long ago.
Re:Tell HN: Never search for domains on Godaddy.com on Friday September 18, 2020 @10:02AM (#24516879)
well known. only use domains.google (for searching).
Re:Fuck Cloud Messaging on Sunday September 13, 2020 @01:55PM (#24462628)
> they'd have to give them their FCM credentials, which is a no-no.

trivially addressed via a proxy, which you’d want anyway to properly monetize it

Re:Ask HN: What is a better approach to interviewing? on Saturday September 12, 2020 @03:45PM (#24454994)
casual culture talk with 2 people, then a 2-5 day contract. only works for out of work candidates of course.
Re:Nothing can now be believed which is seen in a newspaper (1807) on Thursday September 03, 2020 @04:11PM (#24368322)
yeah well you’re not being persecuted. for many it may as well be the 12th century or whatever
Re:The joys of owning an ‘OG’ email account on Thursday September 03, 2020 @09:27AM (#24363817)
gmail burns addresses forever. no one else will get it if you close it.
Re:The joys of owning an ‘OG’ email account on Thursday September 03, 2020 @09:19AM (#24363742)
i owned [email protected] for many years before they realized they shouldn’t have allowed that to be registered. that was fun.
Re:Tesla and FBI prevented $1M ransomware hack on Thursday August 27, 2020 @09:56AM (#24293727)
muy interensante.

we often theorize about / present a threat model of an insider becoming malicious in exactly this way. rare that we hear of it actually occurring.

the number used in such threat modeling scenarios is typically $1MM. maybe we need to up that to $4.5MM. (per TFA)

note the simplification in the headline: the $1MM was merely the insider’s share, not the proposed ransomware amount.

i think this deserves a nitpick. when we say “makes” wrt a person, it means their gross salary/income. here, it refers to revenue. that’s misleading.
Re:US plans to produce ‘Iberian’ ham in Texas and Georgia on Saturday August 15, 2020 @02:18PM (#24171013)
yes funny but why would they call it that. jamon murica
Re:Mass Exodus of SF on Friday August 14, 2020 @11:57PM (#24165790)
> It should be noted that San Francisco had an unusually low inventory relative to other large cities prior to the pandemic. Historically, the ratio of homes for sale relative to total housing has been a quarter of what New York's was.

the article is totally about percentages. 1->2 = 100%. poor framing, for clicks, if you ask me.

I detest uber. yet AB5 is an abomination, an embarrassment. sad
Re:Cardboard theft on Wednesday August 12, 2020 @11:50PM (#24139784)
what is wrong? it costs money to pick up anything. equipment fuel salaries workman’s comp etc. thieves don’t have such costs.
Re:Celebrate Woz's 70th on Tuesday August 11, 2020 @11:16AM (#24121172)
just? sales is the more important part of a for profit company you know.
exactly. it’s not so much craven as it is purely capitalistic. one should not be surprised. i think it’s fine. i welcome it even. it’s better to be beholden to capital than to the political whims of the day. (not in general, just for an industry that has such power)
even the AS/400 didn’t require power down.

this is actually so ancient it’s hard to find docs. here’s something from 1976. (the report is 1990 but the hardwares dates to ‘76). https://www.hpl.hp.com/techreports/tandem/TR-90.5.pdf

> when people complain that Google was showing them ads for inappropriate products or what not and Google would investigate and track down the front doing the injecting

google listens to complaints? i suspect they discover these things internally, not from user reports.

> a novelty

not a novelty. the true bigiron vendors (not sun) had been doing this for decades.

mainframe reliability puts the upstart unix systems to shame.

you don’t think google has changed the world??
Re:Reviewing the worst piece of code ever on Sunday August 02, 2020 @04:10PM (#24031293)
i hope you left before the 2nd week!
> It's recommended (and much easier) to share access to a folder instead of individual files.

It’s not. folders don’t actually exist in google drive. files are shared individually. there’s a very complex interaction between imaginary folder ACLs and file ACLs. if you depend on the folders as being hierarchical (which they aren’t), this will bite you through unexpected leftover sharing.

The exceptionally stupidly names Shared drives (used to be called Team Drives) fix this.

Otherwise, ‘gam’ is the best tool out there for managing this.

Some of the paid tools are like VPNs. you end up giving full access to the tool developer. be very careful if you go with a paid tool vs ‘gam’.

Re:How to validate your startup idea quickly on Friday July 24, 2020 @11:34AM (#23940725)
it’s official. substack is the new medium. a platform mostly for worthless “expert” opinion.
the tone may have been moderate, but the message is smug.

otoh it’s just marketing, and CF is no stranger to it, so i think it’s fair.

Re:How to Gradually Exit Twitter on Sunday July 19, 2020 @03:31PM (#23891775)
how to abruptly exit twitter: quit
clunky and annoying compared to what? they are the best i’ve seen and quite good. if there’s something better please share. i would love to know about it.

comments in spreadsheets stink but everything else is pretty great. ok one more flaw. you can’t unassigned a task from yourself. you can only reassign to someone else or mark it done (which clears the comment thread).
