Re:Ask HN: When does it make sense to roll your own X? on Sunday July 14, 2019 @06:08AM (#20432668)
You are nitpicking and TBH I don't get your message. My post was a general advice and the tendency of a creative mind, still you need to look into each case and decide if make or buy. And your NPM trap analogy is just blatantly wrong and doesn't help OP. You could have mentioned any package manager btw.
Anyone has a tldr? Topic sounds super interesting and I don't have time to read now.
Re:Google Photos is making photos semi-public on Sunday July 14, 2019 @01:20AM (#20431795)
This is the reason why I pay for Dropbox to host my pictures. The problem with Google is often not about severe privacy problems, it's about 'you never know' and getting educated and finding the right setting is hassle everytime. Worse here is FB.
Re:Ask HN: When does it make sense to roll your own X? on Sunday July 14, 2019 @01:16AM (#20431776)
My brain says never, for everything there is some turn-key thing. Even your entire project might be franksteined with some third-party products and Zapier into something working. Same with libs, better a crappy lib than working days for something you might not need.

My gut says always: most of the times turn-key stuff has weaknesses and good libs with perfect apis, well maintained and with a great community are rare but they are there of course.

Hard question since what the gut says is more fun while the alternative is just about gluing libs together. But using libs and once they don't fulfill your needs build yourself is the right but more boring way to go.

Re:React Native 0.60 on Sunday July 14, 2019 @01:10AM (#20431754)
Is the layout system as powerful as eg css' flexbox, React's component composing etc.?
Re:VAIO announces tiny laptop with tons of ports on Sunday July 14, 2019 @01:07AM (#20431745)
Ok good to know. Fan control is super important, the only one managing this well with different and really working profiles seems to be Dell. Lenovo just started to get better there (with the S940 which is quiet but because of heavy throttling and no options for profiles, however better than the way around).
Re:VAIO announces tiny laptop with tons of ports on Saturday July 13, 2019 @10:23PM (#20431292)
Ports are good and what Apple does is ridiculous but it is also about which ports.

Nowadays, I tend to miss real Thunderbolt 3 ports on USB-C, better 2 than 1 and with 4 lanes. This is what they totally forgot. So I could connect to an ancient VGA projector but not to a common 2x 4k@60hz display setup? This doesn't make sense.

Are you taking about recent VAIO machines? If yes name then.

You are faster pressing Caps with your pinkie than Cmd with your thumb.

But the vast majority stays with RN.

Tell us nore about your dev experience with Flutter. Can you also create the web version of your app with Flutter?

Re:React Native 0.60 on Saturday July 13, 2019 @02:45PM (#20429509)
IDK what you mean but there so many things much easier and straightforward with web-based tech, eg sane layout systems like flexbox are way superior than anything native frameworks have to offer.
Re:React Native 0.60 on Saturday July 13, 2019 @02:34PM (#20429463)
The Discord devs use RN and their app is anything but experimental or small. And there are by far not the only one (Skype, Instagram, Wix, UberEats, Tesla, Baidu, Salesforce).

Native devs don’t like RN because the mobile dev supply gets bigger which hurts their market value. That’s the real reason of your post, spreading FUD.

RN has its limitations but for 80% of apps it’s absolutely fine.

Re:PCI Express on the Raspberry Pi 4 on Wednesday July 10, 2019 @06:25AM (#20400646)
ah right, think all software I use are available as AArch64 binaries.
Re:PCI Express on the Raspberry Pi 4 on Wednesday July 10, 2019 @05:36AM (#20400450)
I use tmux and vim over ssh. You mean Arch? Yeah why not.

Then also a lot webpack, Docker: wondering if they would get the Pi stuttering when compiling/building? And if vim is still smooth then (which isn't the case with my 20$ vps).

I develop remotely on VPSes because I like to have an always-on box reachable from any client. I am wondering if a RP4 offers a similar experience at lower cost.

Does anyone use a RP for this?

Re:Apple kills the non-Touch Bar MacBook Pro on Wednesday July 10, 2019 @04:56AM (#20400294)
Just put Ctrl on Caps and then ctrl+c and +v is on par or or even better. Don't know anyone who is using the original control. Even better: create a tap/hold key with Esc/Ctrl on Caps. Then you have a superior keyboard experience because the alt keys are better positioned and usable. On Macs you have just Cmd as the only sane/reachable modifier key compared to crtl and alt on Windows/Linux. However you could also somehow get this setup on a Mac with fiddling with Karabiner. But here again Windows' Autohotkey is superior.

Re choppy scrolling, I have a Windows precision touchpad on my notebook and it's super close to a MBP but what is even much better than a MBP touchpad: get a Logitech mouse with a free wheel eg the G502, best scrolling experience and buttersmooth.

I thought also there is nothing else than macOS but there is even more good stuff outside. eg window management on Windows or linux eg with i3 there is just 100x better. on macos it's a joke to nonexistent.

Re:Apple kills the non-Touch Bar MacBook Pro on Tuesday July 09, 2019 @02:04PM (#20394800)
Imagine a random manufacturer, let's say HP, was the one bringing a touchbar to their notebooks. Some press, a lot of laughter but quickly, nobody would talk anymore about them and/or buy that notebooks.

With Apple, people keep on complaining OVER years. The touchbar, the prices, the crappy keyboards... the reason? IDK, maybe they are locked-in and can't move to another platform but there is only one single reason to be locked-in on macOS: if you develop apps for iOS, otherwise every other platform is currently way better and switching is a matter of days. Once I had the keyboard trouble on a $4K MBP I switched instantly and never returned to macOS.

Re:Show HN: Milkshake – Make Websites from a Phone on Wednesday June 12, 2019 @05:52AM (#20163099)
Milkshake as a product and company looks well executed.

However, I wonder if these website builders are a fallacy. If you make money with your business get a team building your custom site, if not just put your opening times right on Google Business without having a website. A half-baken website also done with a builder is still work and if nobody drives by, why the hassle?

And most builders I know still have subpar mobile responsiveness. How is Milkshake in this regard? Are there any examples?

OT: I used flux ages ago. You seem still to be active since you intro'd yourself als the flux guy. Out of curiosity, why should anyone still use flux nowadays when all OSes have time-based red-shifting built-in?

Exercise is important especially for your brain but bad nutrition has a much higher impact than no exercise.

Nice read about Termius' background.

I like Termius, it's by far the best ssh client on iOS. I just wonder if this syncing is really a crucial feature.

I have one main remote dev server which is the gateway to all other remote servers. I use most of the time the main server and haven't had the need to sync anything. Installing keys on ssh clients is indeed a bit tedious but you do it only once.

Or do I miss anything?

Re:Nim 0.20.0 (1.0 RC1) released on Thursday June 06, 2019 @12:13PM (#20115932)
OT: I am huge fan of whitespace-sensitive languages.[0] This is alone a reason why I wish nim all the best for its future!

[0] If a language is not whitespace-sensitive I prefer curly brackets as block markers.

Any Googlers from the search team reading this:

Just downrank medium.com. This is the actual problem with Medium.

The content on medium is ok but does rarely match the search ranking it has.
