tcoppi

Sad news. She gave me a gmail invite after I begged for one on slashdot, seems like an eon ago. We corresponded off and on but unfortunately I was never able to meet her in real life. Rest in peace.

Even assuming you are correct on all these points ASLR is still an important use case and the effective security of current 64-bit address spaces is low.
Re:Ask HN: Are there any rural tech communities? on Friday April 22, 2022 @05:09PM (#31128171)
Agree Raleigh and the general Triangle area is a good one. Maybe surprising for most here but Maryland and Virginia is like this as well. We're more expensive but you can get 1-3 acres within an hour commute of DC and/or Baltimore with a relatively robust tech scene, especially if you're willing to work for the government. Areas like Frederick, MD even have reasonable rail commutes into DC!

If they borrow money to purchase the stock that's effectively what it is, a margin loan.
If anyone trades options, the IV on options expiring in March on AMD went up significantly last week with no apparent news, probably because of these guys.
Re:LLVM patch to fix half of Spectre attack on Thursday January 04, 2018 @10:15AM (#16070880)
Seems like the ultimate end-game here is to have mini-vms for every process using CPU-level ring protection. If you can't speculate across privilege levels, only inside them, it isn't a security problem anymore.
Right, so you're trusting the miners. Got it.
It isn't zero trust though, you're trusting the miners(collectively) at a minimum.
Re:Buys/Sells temporarily disabled on Coinbase on Monday December 11, 2017 @04:10PM (#15900469)
You have to trust miners and developers with blockchains still.
CBOE settles to Gemini's spot price, not GDAX. The prices between exchanges differ dramatically currently.
There doesn't need to be an official BTC-USD tether, BTCUSD on bitfinex is exactly that in practice and in fact.
Re:What to Worry About in This Surreal Bull Market on Tuesday November 28, 2017 @07:40AM (#15796661)
Why do you think any of these factors relate at all to whether there is an imminent stock market crash?
Re:Doomsday planning for less crazy folk on Sunday August 27, 2017 @08:36PM (#15113651)
Exactly, there is no reason anyone should be on the roof of their homes in Houston other than inability to heed warnings and read a weather report.
Wow, someone on the Internet that summarizes the bull case for Tesla rationally, succinctly, and with numbers to boot!
He definitely set off a chain of events that caused automated market makers to re-evaluate their idea of a fair market value rapidly in the downward direction, and it cascaded from there.
I mean, I don't think that is what is happening right now, but you might be surprised what it takes to move a market sometimes. The Flash Crash[1] was caused by a single individual. Granted he was playing with futures and you can get some insane leverage with a modest account there, but it is within the ability of a couple of individuals with six-figure accounts to make some well placed bets and move a market significantly.

As of February Elon owns 22%. He and other board members/early investors are individuals so I don't see how it is weird to include them, though.
Not sure why you're being downvoted, I don't think you are wrong. Possibly the misunderstanding comes from a slight technicality - markets exist because buyers and sellers like a convenient place to trade. When buyers and sellers convene they arrive at a market clearing price, which is by definition the value of a company at that time. But finding that value is not the purpose of a market, and the fact that there are many varying opinions as to what the value of a company at any given time should be is what makes a market in the first place.
TSLA is approximately 66% owned by institutional investors(investment banks, funds of any sort(including active and index funds that may be in 401(k)s). That leaves ~30% of the shares controlled by individuals, which is fairly typical.
Re:Tesla Model 3 Hits Production on Wednesday July 05, 2017 @02:30PM (#14704970)
That is quite interesting. I didn't think they made anywhere near that many beta Model 3s to be shipping them like that.
Re:Tesla Model 3 Hits Production on Wednesday July 05, 2017 @10:39AM (#14702730)
Model 3 or Model S? I suspect you mean Model S.

More likely to be the huge amount of plasticizers that have been making their way into our diet, imo.
Most automakers do something similar now. Regular financing is so cheap now it almost always makes sense to get the cash back deals from the manufacturer rather than get the 0% financing.
Re:Apple Reports Second Quarter Results on Tuesday May 02, 2017 @07:07PM (#14251520)
And they chose to buyback stock and pay dividends, which means they think those other uses for their cash are unproductive relative to buying back the stock.
Re:Apple Reports Second Quarter Results on Tuesday May 02, 2017 @07:04PM (#14251500)
AAPL also has a dividend. From the point of view of shareholders, growth is better than dividends or buybacks.
Re:Apple Reports Second Quarter Results on Tuesday May 02, 2017 @05:29PM (#14250791)
> Increasing stock buyback by 75 billion as well, showing that Apple believes their stock still has room to grow.

Or means that they have nothing else productive to do with their cash.

Re:Musk Teases Tesla Simi on Friday April 28, 2017 @06:30PM (#14223673)
Most interesting thing is that it is designed for long haul trucking. Can't want to hear how they are pulling that off, doesn't seem to be possible given current battery densities.
Re:The Boring Company [video] on Friday April 28, 2017 @06:12PM (#14223565)
I wouldn't be surprised if a 2x or 3x more efficient boring machine is the ultimate product of this and it makes future infrastructure projects much cheaper as a result.
Re:The Boring Company [video] on Friday April 28, 2017 @05:49PM (#14223362)
Somehow I think Elon Musk has made it through the middlebrow dismissal phase of this if the concept has made it this far(to include actual digging in SpaceX's parking lot even).
