Re:Dogs, but Not Wolves, Use Humans as Tools on Wednesday January 21, 2015 @11:35AM (#8923818)
If you're wondering why the wolves weren't given the impossible food challenge at 5 months, the author notes in the comments:

> @K9TrainerTina: they were, actually. however, the 5 month old wolf pups mostly just went to sleep after initially failing to get the food, so they were excluded from the analysis.

Also of note, and linked in the article, is the subject of Myxomatosis, a virus created to curb the population of rabbits in Australia.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myxomatosis

Noting that the experiments described in the article were performed on yeast, can anybody better versed in biology convey a better idea on how applicable to humans these results are?

As described in the article, we both have telomeres, but as far as I know the comparison ends there.

You should consider checking out the game "Space, Pirates, And Zombies" (aka SPAZ), which is a more recent iteration on the top-down space shooter. Plus, it's also made by a two-man team.
Re:Nexus 5 on Thursday October 31, 2013 @07:10PM (#6650721)
I look at it this way:

Plan #1: $30 for 100 minutes, with $0.10 a minute afterwards.

Plan #2: $40 for unlimited minutes with MetroPCS.

So, if I manage to talk less than 100min + ($50 - $40)/$0.10 = 200 minutes per month, then I end up spending less than I would on the MetroPCS plan.

Another glitch that was found relatively recently (not shown in linked run):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7mp0uHr2X6U&t=19m20s

A more complete explanation of the glitch occurs earlier in the video, but he explains the basics of it after he performs the glitch (unfortunately dying in the process). Apparently three different exploiters found three exploits that, when combined, enabled this glitch. Quite fascinating.

Since the article itself only linked to it:

"Each of the discovered vulnerabilities allowed any @yahoo.com email account to be compromised simply by sending a specially crafted link to a logged-in Yahoo user and making him/her clicking on it."[1]

And in Dallas with a new(ish) building:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Museum_Tower_%28Dallas%29#Confl...

Has yet to be fixed.

I've recently been using white sticky notes, which are quite easy to remove and cover a 3x3 square grid almost exactly, to great effect in a pen and paper RPG I run.
Re:House of Lords debates pardon for Alan Turing on Friday July 19, 2013 @03:00PM (#6072181)
Listening to the video, I believe one of the lords mentioned they had done just that - pardon all the people convicted by that law who were still alive today. I'll try to find a news reference.

The question, now, is whether to posthumously pardon the others.

Update: Found an article. Turns out they haven't been pardoned, but their convictions are now "disregarded" and no longer appear on their criminal record[1].

In space, the atmosphere can't filter out any of the sunlight, nor can clouds/water absorb some of its energy, which results in about 30% more energy[1].

Plus, if you're not near any objects that can block the sun (i.e. Earth/Moon), you get full, intense sunlight 24-hours a day.

And you can use some of that sunlight to just directly heat the water, which makes it easier to split.

Given all that, I'd say that it's very likely you could get enough energy to split water in space.

Re:Oculus Rift Will Change Your Gaming World on Friday January 18, 2013 @07:10PM (#5081934)
That would be quite tricky, since both the camera (attached to your head) and your hands could be moving in different directions at the same time.

A stationary, secondary observer (like a Kinect) would be several orders of magnitude more reliable. All that's left is for someone to make a game that actually utilizes that idea.

I believe you're looking for the omnidirectional treadmill[1].

> It may come down to the team adding a small camera on the outside – along with a possible push button – that allows the user to pause the game and see the feed without forcing the user to take the goggles completely off their head.

The idea of a camera to let you see the actual world is pretty nifty. It even comes pre-built with philosophical questions (which is the actual world?).

On the other hand, I can't help but think that the camera could also be used to prevent people from smacking their head into real, physical objects.

Stick a few distance sensors and overlay portions of the camera when an object is too close? It would interrupt the game, sure, but less so than you headbutting your monitor or a wall. Just a thought.

Re:A lawyer's analysis of Bilbo's contract in The Hobbit on Friday January 18, 2013 @11:01AM (#5079248)
Concerning your point about Thorin being the only judge:

> Disputes arising between the Contract Parties shall be heard and judged by an arbitrator of the Company’s choosing

By that clause, the company should be able to choose Thorin as the arbitrator regardless of the fact that he's the King Under the Mountain. That fact alone would put Bilbo in dire straights if, like you said, he ever crossed Thorin.

Re:Hipset Launches Artist Discovery Program on Thursday January 17, 2013 @07:02PM (#5076173)
At the bottom of the page it says:

"Forbes: Hipset Is Next Generation Music Site >>"

...which seems like it would be a link to the article. But I can't seem to click it. In fact, I can't even find that text in the DOM, which is confusing me something fierce.

Re:Hipset Launches Artist Discovery Program on Thursday January 17, 2013 @06:47PM (#5076087)
I imagine the $20 also acts as a nifty spam filter.

Some minor feedback: on the scrolling album background, one of the squares looks like the icon for Pandora, the music streaming service. Was that intentional? Bit of an odd choice in my opinion, since it's not really an artist.

Re:What the Maker Revolution Will Really Look Like on Thursday January 17, 2013 @05:16PM (#5075586)
I wouldn't call you pessimistic - more realistic.

I expect that the reaction of the Manufacturing industry's reaction to small-scale Makers will parallel the Recording/Movie industry to file-sharing, as the situations are similar in many regards.

It's very likely to happen, and it'll suck, but like you said, hopefully we get legislation through in time to protect some of the small Makers so they don't get sued into oblivion by the future-RIAA.

No state income tax, much cheaper housing costs than the national average, and cheap gas make it a pretty good place to live and work. Plus, because of all that, you can pay your employees much less (than California) and still provide them an equally-good standard of living.

And Tex-Mex! I don't see how people in other parts of the country could live without Tex-Mex food.

If you look at comment 11 [1] in the article, it points to [2] as being the source of the TTS hiccup.

It also points out that speaking the phrase "filled with" spits out the rest of the text [3].

Re:A $5 Lamp Powered Solely by Gravity on Friday December 21, 2012 @02:59PM (#4954249)
People couldn't lift the weight without consuming energy from food. Doesn't mean that it's powered by food.

The machine converts gravitational potential energy to electromagnetic radiation. People generate the gravitational potential energy by lifting the weight using kinetic energy, which was likewise created by converting chemical energy.

It's easier just to say "Gravity" because, without gravity, it wouldn't work with its inanimate weight.

Re:Pathogen from gut of obese human causes obesity in germfree mice on Wednesday December 19, 2012 @04:09PM (#4944845)
But once they diet to a point where they are not obese, the bacteria dies off?

I believe the theory is the reverse - by killing off the bacteria, the person becomes less obese.

Anti-biotics probably won't work as well as you hope because they kill all the bacteria in the gut - good and bad - which will just create more digestive problems.

Re:Pathogen from gut of obese human causes obesity in germfree mice on Wednesday December 19, 2012 @03:53PM (#4944756)
I've also heard that eating smaller meals, more regularly, can help your body lose weight.

This trend correlates well with the above idea, since smaller meals means that the sugars should be absorbed before the large intestine, thereby further robbing the bacteria of their food.

It would also explain the opposite effect - that eating larger meals makes losing weight harder, since the larger quantity of food has a better chance to get to your large intestine.

Re:Moonbase: A plug and play engine for making web animations on Wednesday December 19, 2012 @01:43PM (#4944001)
Are there any boolean logic blocks? I noticed that the Pointer has the "Moving" attribute which returns true or false, but the math block doesn't seem to support boolean functions.

I tried making the box be a different color when the mouse was moving (multiply the boolean by the color?) but couldn't figure out how.

Re:‘Grunt Funds’ Are Trending in Startup Circles on Tuesday December 18, 2012 @06:53PM (#4940391)
I agree with Alex. The dynamic equity concept doesn't sound simple to begin with, and I think your suggestions would just complicate the idea further.

A business can't spend all day meta-managing their equity, after all.
