I’d say the majority of their users are probably older. People who started using it based on familiarity from when they first used it a decade ago (or more). I do know my in-laws refuse to use Google/Apple Maps, because it’s “what they know”.

Yes please, This is absolutely necessary
I don’t live in Michigan but my employer gives you close to 1k extra a month and pays for your phone an internet bill for being on call.

They generally let people volunteer to be on call. But since everyone wants their weekends and evening it’s usually the same person. One of the other devs and I have been on primary rotation for about 2 1/2 years now. It’s a shame more employees don’t compensate for on call better. And honestly our teams on call is not a regular occurrence it’s maybe once every 2 weeks we’ll get a call for something that’s a 5 minute fix.

Re:I used Claude Code to get a second opinion on my MRI on Sunday June 28, 2026 @02:52PM (#48710289)
It’s an odd field, obviously it’s in high demand for diagnostics and anytime you have to do an xray, MRI, etc you have to wait hours for one to become available.

I think they’re artificially stunting the field to raise their wages. For example in my city the medical school only accepts 11 people into the program a year. (With an average graduation rate or 3-5). My niece has been trying for 2 years and finally got in this last year. Even radiology is doing AI assisted diagnostics. Half my MRI’s from this year has Doctor notes and HealthBot (AI) notes attached to them.

~ I’m assuming other schools severely limit their radiology admissions as well. To keep the wages high and the field desirable.

UO Outlands has been pretty popular for a few years. They’ve implemented a lot of custom aspects (specialties), craft, new dungeons, land, as well as weekly quests and events. My brother and I play it a few hours a week. It’s incredibly popular for the nostalgia and its player base seems to be pretty consistent. It reminds me of early UO where your exploring, learning, and dying a lot. And there tends to be players everywhere you go.

Was this a local/on prem version of GL or the hosted web version?

My previous org had an on prem version hosted on a local VM. It was extremely fast, we setup another VM for the runners, and one for storing all the docker containers. The thing I’ve seen people do it use the VM they put their gitlab instance on for everything and ends up bogging things down quite a bit.

They are taxes, but they’re paying pennies on the dollar. While the rest of us are paying quarters for every dollar earned.

I completely agree my mother has MS and I have my own autoimmune issues. Something like this would be extremely helpful for people with debilitating diseases that cause muscle deterioration.

This is just RubyCenteral trying to get ahead of the news and save face before they end up looking like complete @$$ bags.
I’m sure this has been the case all along.

Re:The Pentium as a Navajo Weaving on Sunday September 01, 2024 @06:07PM (#41420816)
And as sad it is, they cycle as has repeated itself and its still a sad situation around Shiprock. I'm someone who lives within the general area and poverty is still saturating the Navajo community. To make things worse the oilfield in the area has shifted to Texas. And within the last year the Four Corners Power Plant (PNM) and Navajo Mine (BHP) have shut down. These have been 2 extremely large employers of the area for the Navajo people since the 70's. Lots of businesses in neighboring towns like Farmington and Gallup have shuddered. And a large amount of people (who could afford to) have moved to places like Phoenix and Denver so they don't get stuck being part of the situation.

These were my absolute favorite sites that got me through me teens while I was learning and improving my skills. The development/design community really came together to help everyone grow.

This is such a big release with many great changes, I love it.
Re:Show HN: Open-source alternatives to tools You pay for on Saturday December 09, 2023 @10:56AM (#38582914)
IMO it looks like a lot of the tools listed under free-for are SaSS products with free demos or free limited accounts. Rather than full on OpenSource Alternatives.

An example of this is under issue tracking basecamp is listed. Or under CMS there’s DatoCMS.

My team has gotten bitten by ActiveAdmin a few times in the past. We've switched to Avo and it's been an absolute wonder.

I wish I could upvote this more!

Traefik is absolutely amazing! And it seems like in the development community every wants to use nginx. But in my experience traefik is absolutely perfect for proxying with container deployed applications.

I'd think so, I get dozens of recruiters reaching out every week. My current position I started a few months ago from a recruiter show reached out to me through LinkedIn as well.

I love using oh-my-fish but I honestly think a lot of people have moved to using fisher. Because of OMF's lack of updates.

Re:Ruby Together on Wednesday March 09, 2022 @10:12PM (#30622833)
I've been doing Ruby development for about 12 years now. I can honestly say I've had more job offers this last year that ever before and the money is honestly pretty great. With the release of Ruby3, Rails7, and many people having JS fatigue it seems like the ruby community has had quite a bit of growth within the last year or two. (not HUGE growth like 10 years ago, but enough that it's still pretty noticeable throughout the community)
My current work forces updates every 3 months. It seems more like a security issue requiring this reset so often.

This is because they create another problem when anyone you talk to will say they have their password and just increment a number for every password change. That way they’re not having to remember a whole new password every few months. So there’s never much of a change in anyones password during these rotations.

Re:I Quit Shopify After Five Months on Monday February 07, 2022 @10:39AM (#30246292)
I think requiring "years of experience" is a relative reflection of the employeer.

My current team has a senior that has been at the company for 20 years as an Analyst, she can't write a line of code without assistance. But she's just buying her time. And we've got a few juniors/midlevels that could out code almost anyone of the team. But because they lack those years on their resume they're stuck in their positions for some time.

I think it's an odd situation to be in though; most companies seem to look at either years of experience or make you do leetcode/Fizzbuzz challenges to determine your level. Which how practical is LeetCode challenges in your actual day-to-day work environment?

Re:IRS Will Soon Require Selfies for Online Access on Wednesday January 19, 2022 @12:48PM (#29997142)
I'm not sure if this is "absolutely new".

A few months ago my wife and I had to do some stuff through the IRS. And in order to login through ID.me. We had do an actual video session with ID.me so they could see our drivers licenses, SSN cards, and a few background questions. In order to verify our identity.

It was a bit time consuming rather than just logging in. But with so much identity theft, I think something like this was inevitable.

Their timeclock application is terrible.

The org I work for transitioned their Kronos from onsite to their multi-tenant cloud system. And it's been an absolute nightmare. Both software suites are a mess but transitioning to their cloud suite is like downgrading at least 10 years of upgrades.
