Not only you are paying extra for tips and whatever the restaurant adds additional chargers to cover “employee costs” (yes this is real in the US), you are giving them more money when you put your email address in their payment system. I noticed such a trend when I started receiving advertisements from places I had visited long time ago. So this idea of saving the environment by cutting down on...
Verizon made an update to its privacy policies. Account holders’ email addresses are no more private. Also, the option opt out keeps reverting back to “allow”. Their policy now startes: “We may disclose, or allow certain third-party advertising and analytics companies to collect personal information such as your email address, information about your purchase of products and services from us, and information about your activity on our sites and in our apps. These companies may use your email address, or other information they collect to create one or more identifiers associated with you, your household or your device(s) both on and off our sites and in our apps.”

It is an old product that is no longer relevant, and there is no longer any demand for it. Time to move on.

I had Grammarly premium for many years as part of my university studies until it was dropped today. $30 a month for premium is a lot, and I am hesitant to pay the discount annual. Searching the web reveals a lot of alternatives, but I am not sure which is good or bad. Any ideas ?
Cool. Curious about IUB.zip. Can you share more details when to find it.
My LinkedIn ban was lifted today. It is not clear what reversed the decision. Whatever the reason was, it doesn’t matter. I appreciate all your supporting voices. Thank you.
Thank you. I have side question for you. Sorry, all this thread coincides with another thread about LinkedIn and me getting banned without knowing why (
https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=37748263). As a job recruiter looking for freelancers, do you expect to find the person on LinkedIn as part of the fact checking process? Would you seriously consider alternating sites such as a person’s website or GitHub and would you find the person a suspect if their LinkedIn profile does not exist ?
What are the most common freelancing sites you use for job postings?
Thank you. This was extremely helpful.
I haven’t. Thank you for that.
That can happen cause it some point some LLM folks are scraping HN. But then, aren’t the majority of LLM owners the same that own the social media products, especially the centralized ones. It is indeed scary where we are heading. Side question, what does OP stand for?
100% in agreement there and that is exactly why I focused solely on LinkedIn to build my network. Now it all vanished.
Thank you. If only I can talk to a human not a machine at LinkedIn. I am always getting the same automated response each time I try to reply to the ban email message. “ We've deemed the activity in your account is in violation of the LinkedIn User Agreement and Professional Community Policies. Your appeal has been denied and your account has been restricted permanently.
Please see our User Agreement and Professional Community Policies for more information.”
Thank you. I needed that.
Their term of service states that one cannot have more the one account. Plus, right before they permanently banned me they asked me to upload a government id to confirm that I am actually a human person and not a machine. They know what they are doing. I do not know if it worth to continue plead my case with them. I have my dignity and I have done nothing wrong to be treated this way by LinkedIn. That is why am I trying to move on … I appreciate all HN folks with their suggestions. Thank you, all!
I was thinking on the same lines but we have Mastodon and Fediverse today that still need to grow beyond the techies of the world and include business folks or even recruiters. A supply and demand use case.
:) I also find the word “free” in freelancer as odd and contractor is for someone fixing your home. All are simply labels.
GitHub was a missed opportunity for me. After copilot, I dropped GitHub, both public and private code for serious code contribution, except for some necessary cloning or helping someone. I thought that LinkedIn is the professional forum, and I dropped every other centralized social media. This all eggs in one basket backfired for me
Another name for freelancer. I code and also have experience in managing IT teams. I decided to go solo and attempted to promote my experience via LinkedIn posts instead of GitHub code commits, for example.
The only thing that I was consciously aware of is that I was solely using the web version of LinkedIn on my phone. Last month they restricted my account and they told me that I am using an automation tool. I said that I am not. They did it again few weeks later but then reactivated it once I said I am not. This time, no back and forth. Permanent ban with no explanation.
I am enjoying Gopher, BBS, IRC apps, and the sdf.org PDP terminals that make me feel like I am in the 90s again.

I posted earlier on HN that LinkedIn permanently banned me without knowing why. It’s a moot point with them because no person on LinkedIn seems willing (or aware) to talk to me and tell me why. All I get is the same automated response that I am banned: “We've deemed the activity in your account is in violation of the LinkedIn User Agreement and Professional Community Policies. Your appeal has...
Thank you. I recently dropped my full time job to start a consulting job. I needed LinkedIn for the crucial networking during my early stages. Now I am completely banned without knowing why
Good point. I checked my private relay settings in iOS iCloud. It is set as “maintain general location” along with a description “ Maintain your general location to receive localized content, or enhance your privacy by using a broader IP address based on your country and time zone.
Safari Private Browsing always uses an IP location from your country and time zone.”
I have private relay enabled via iOS iCloud. I have no extensions installed. Preload top hit is enabled on safari by default. (Not sure if this is could be a factor). I only use safari across my devices. 2FA is enabled for LinkedIn and save password. That is it. I access LinkedIn frequently throughout the day.
Nothing. I only use safari to access LinkedIn via iOS and Mac OS.
I hear you. I just got officially banned permanently yesterday. I do not use their app except the web. Last month I was kicked off because they claimed that I am using an automation tool, which I don’t. The second time they kicked me out, they asked me to confirm that I do not use an automation all. I said I don’t. Yesterday, I got kicked out and was told to upload a government id such as a driving license. Shortly after, I got a message “ We've deemed the activity in your account is in violation of the LinkedIn User Agreement and Professional Community Policies. Your appeal has been denied and your account has been restricted permanently.
Please see our User Agreement and Professional Community Policies for more information.”
I am not able to talk or ask anyone at LinkedIn why I have been banned. Is it because I don’t use their app? I don’t know.
