The irony is dawning on me that for much of the recent computing era we've developed defenses against massive endpoint outages (worms, etc.) and one of them is now inadvertently reproducing the exact problem we had mostly eradicated.
It’s a decade old at this point & yet continues to be startlingly relevant.
There is no technological reason why applications can’t be distributed as PWA packages similar to the days prior to the App Store.
This would serve two important functions:
1. Remove most if not all distribution monopoly concerns
2. Create application standards that function nearly identically across the myriad of screen sizes and input types that are now available.
The current status quo of some service that makes my life easier or better only being available in a browser or only available on one or two of my devices (or, most often, available in a few ways but only bug-free or full-featured in only one method of access) isn’t the future I want.

It’s true that I don’t have a podcast. But I think I’m in the majority of computer users there! I’ll also say that I have had to accept some limits or look for workarounds in the past, but the big additions of file downloads, safari compatibility modes and finally stage manager have effectively taken care of those.
And a result of this inevitably will be huge winners who invest in sustainable ways of being and huge losers tied to old ways of doing things.
a suggestion: key to us adopting this would be the migration story. I’d love if that was clearly presented on the website.
it just hasn’t been updated in quite some time. there are a lot of ways the back end could support new UI features etc., but something seems to be holding it back.
Open protocols and techniques that enable effortless parsing of information serve a growing need for users of the web today. While I’m not sure if it will be gopher or something new, I foresee significant disruption potential for whatever effectively fills this need at scale.

Recently I had some minor symptoms and wanted to get a test. By going through my employer’s employee testing process I
A) got a test scheduled for the same day I called
B) got my negative result under 12 hours later
This was a transformative moment for me in recognizing that there is an intentional, and centralized project to stress testing capacity in the United States. There is no shortage of materials or staff, just funding for lab capacity. This is an incredibly solvable problem that our leaders are choosing not to solve.I truly believe the future historical narrative of this moment will cast our elected leaders as the orchestrators of mass genocide. It’s hard to consider living, breathing, contemporary people who hold esteemed positions to be on the level of evil as historical Nazis. But as time passes and we consider the impact their choices are having, it will both become easier to cast them in such a light, and to question the passivity of a population that accepts their decisions. It has never been more clear to me how such atrocities can happen and at the same time become normalized.
Yes, it doesn’t bombard you with its functionality and at first glance is a simple place to jot notes (perhaps its greatest strength). But dig into the feature list, and perhaps help me find a similar application that:
1) can combine tables, rich text formatting, and in-line sketches 2) can store any file type in-line 3) can encrypt protect notes 4) can bulk share Notes + live edit 5) has a built-in complex document scanner
I know there are some alternatives that cover most of these but I think Apple Notes is king precisely because of these many layers of functionality.

My god i haven’t been so drawn into a website in a long time. I actually forgot what that feeling was like.Ask HN: Where to go for accurate information on Covid-19?
I consider myself someone who is usually able to discern accurate sources of information. But this pandemic has made me question that, particularly when I hear wildly divergent facts about the virus. Can it survive on surfaces, or is face to face contact needed to transmit an infection? Are there asymptomatic cases or was that mis-reported? Partially want answers to these questions but also am...
