Ask HN: Do you find value in GitHub Copilot vs. ChatGPT?

Hey,Been a few months since I tried copilot and wanted to know if it got any better. Last time I tried it, it was decent but not worth the extra 10$. On the other side, ChatGPT has helped me a ton when it comes to various coding stuff.Any opinions on how it is working in the recent months? Is it worth paying for both copilot and chatgpt?

Out of curiosity: How do you get screen sharing on Discord? I've been trying to get it running for some time now, but wasn't able to. (arch, gnome)
Print it out, make it into a painting kinda, sign it and enjoy it on your wall :)

Hey - what exactly do you mean by "Replit has the 2D case"?
Re:Ask HN: Share your personal site on Thursday April 07, 2022 @12:39PM (#30946908)

I've been working on it on and off for a while. What I'm thrilled about is the fact that is has no JavaScript! It is very simple and has a small size!

Depends on the country. In here they are all free (Eastern EU)
I've also felt the need for something similar in various moments. It would be certainly interesting!

I have no idea on even how to start building something like this, but don't you think an OS / community hosted wiki like would fit this use-case well? Especially when/if aiming to make it free.

Re:Ask HN: Quit caffeine? Before and after anecdotes on Saturday February 19, 2022 @05:48PM (#30401263)
I had to quit coffee last year. Bad headaches the first 3 days, got back to normal after about a week.

One of the interesting effects I noticed, is that my energy levels are more constant. No more highs, no more lows. Also, and this might be significant, my anxiety levels decreased significantly (I'd often get a mini panic attack if I drank a bit too much coffee, which happened every few days).

The thing about constant energy levels happens with sugar as well.

This allows me to have around double to time I had before of productivity. In the past, I wasted a lot of time being tired because of the "lows" of coffee / sugar, and the energy during the highs was way more than required for my daily tasks.

Having a moderate level of energy, but constant, helps me be constant in the long run and able to have a couple more hours of good work per day.

Also, life with less anxiety and stress is awesome lol. Also, some slight money savings since I liked quality coffee.

However, I didn't notice a relationship between development skills and coffee. Maybe that some smarter people around are usually more health conscious.

Re:Ask HN: How to build a light weight personal blog? on Wednesday January 05, 2022 @03:40AM (#29806605)
It depends on how lightweight you want it.

I'm hosting mine as an S3 static website, with CloudFront as a CDN and for the domain name linking. Works pretty well. I also have some sort of CI/CD, what I mean is that all my code is on GitHub and whenever there's new code to main, a GitHub action is fired that syncs the branch with the S3 bucket.

I've even managed to remove all the JavaScript from the site :D Works neatly! Let me know if you (or anyone) wants more info ^_^

Edit: Forgot to mention, it's also almost free! I'm paying for the domain names and around 0.1$ / month to AWS.

As a MMA trainee myself, I fully agree. Love the sport (still thinking about ways to avoid injuries long term, tho). However, sadly, since the pandemic I don't feel comfortable going to trainings. I live in a country where there are no measures (at least none respected) so the risk of getting something in such an environment is high. Will go back when things settle down a bit tho :D
That might actually be a great idea! Thanks a bunch!

Do you have any suggestions on how to avoid falling asleep during this?

Ask HN: What hobbies do you have which help you rest your eyes?

One of the issues I'm having with lowering the strain on my eyes, is finding activities that do so.Most of my day contains activities that are done in front of a screen or which are hard on the eyes. The only activity I found that helps is taking a walk (but that's about 1h per day, still need 1-2 more hours of eye resting / time spent outside). So, I come here asking, what do you do in your...

Yep, your 1 makes sense and that's a very good reason to use it - thanks for your work ^_^.

For 2, I usually just use notepad + calendar, seems to work good since it also has notifications

Thanks :)

I often see people in this community being fans of note taking apps. Yet, I never really found why it's useful, maybe someone can enlighten me on that :D

1. For tech articles / knowledge databases -> tech seems to change so fast that research done 3-4 months ago is mostly useless (except for a few more high level areas)

2. For recording / knowledge database purposes -> i never seem to go back to them tho, googling (or duckduckgoing?) seems faster to reach an answer.

3. For current note-taking / todo lists / etc they work well, but so does a simple notepad. A history of those doesn't seem to help me with anything specifically.

4. Same for book notes / reading notes, i never seem to go back to them, actually.

So, in what domains or where do find those apps actually useful?

True. But I'm pretty much stuck on windows so yeah.
Re:Ask HN: Any Decent Firefox Alternatives? on Monday October 11, 2021 @01:22PM (#28830657)
I just did the same, seems nice for now. Yes, it takes a while to set it up but the same applies to any browser nowadays.
Re:Ask HN: Any Decent Firefox Alternatives? on Monday October 11, 2021 @01:18PM (#28830616)
Not sure - I'm having a weekly 1 on 1 call with someone (heard that on Zoom 1 on 1s go to P2P, not sure how it's on Google Meet) and the quality is meh. Significantly worst on FF.
Re:Ask HN: Any Decent Firefox Alternatives? on Monday October 11, 2021 @01:17PM (#28830607)
Broken or hard to use. Usually state run pages for various agencies, school websites things like that (at least in my country).
Re:Ask HN: Any Decent Firefox Alternatives? on Monday October 11, 2021 @12:48PM (#28830283)
I had problems like this with websites I must use. Like various state services websites, school, etc.

It's not the only problem, but I have to use the sites :)

Re:Ask HN: Any Decent Firefox Alternatives? on Monday October 11, 2021 @12:46PM (#28830270)
I have a specific use case where I'm communicating with a person from across the world weekly.

Tried Zoom but eventually moved to Google Meet because it worked better. It could be WAY better but meh. And the difference between Meet on Firefox & Google Chrome is significant.

All this considering I'm running on a gigabit network. Not 100% sure about the partner.

Re:Ask HN: Any Decent Firefox Alternatives? on Monday October 11, 2021 @12:34PM (#28830140)
Looks awesome but the fact that updates are 1 year apart is a bit of a turn off lol.
Re:Ask HN: Any Decent Firefox Alternatives? on Monday October 11, 2021 @12:32PM (#28830106)
Yep, it's not Mozilla's fault many websites don't offer support for it sadly. But it's still frustrating to never be sure and always having to double check with a Chrome if it's because of Firefox or because of the website.

Do you think those optimizations are only in Chrome or also in Chromium? I'd expect only Chrome but...

Re:Ask HN: Any Decent Firefox Alternatives? on Monday October 11, 2021 @12:15PM (#28829933)
Tried it for a while back and it became sluggish.

Just checked it out, it seems fast. It seems decently private (as private as a corp can get lol).

Not sure about updates & performance about Google products. Do you have any clue if chromium includes the not-in-spec performance optimizations for Google Meet and such?

Re:Ask HN: Any Decent Firefox Alternatives? on Monday October 11, 2021 @11:50AM (#28829687)
Used it for some time a while ago - but I don't know, didn't enjoy it too much. Can't really remember why tho.Might give it another try.

Ask HN: Any Decent Firefox Alternatives?

I've been using Firefox for a while now, but I have some issues with it:1. I need to switch to chrome for various products such as Google Meet (works on Firefox, but I ran into performance (call quality) issues).2. I often find sites with bad support for Firefox, and I need to again open a second browser (usually Chrome) to check them out.3. It seems that in the past... long time, they have a...

Not sure what I'd use this for but it looks crazy awesome lol
Been using this for 1-2 weeks now. Compared it with pretty much all the other options I found out there. The experience it's just so much better.

I fully recommend you try it - it's awesome.

All that's left which I want are dark mode mainly and maybe a cheaper alternative to more powerful GPU / something along those line. Tho, with the long-running tasks I don't really mind.

Great job and congrats on launching!

And here I am, in EU, thinking a very long amount of time before committing to even a 5$ subscription.
