I've never seen racists / republicans / right wingers banned from Facebook. However I Have been banned for:

- Calling Trump "White Trash" - Suggesting my tax dollars should not be used to fund Israel's genocide in Palestine - Suggesting that leftist protestors arm themselves for protection against the Proud Boys - Suggesting that my tax dollars should not be used to subsidize churches

I've probably reported 500 blatantly racist and threatening posts since Traitor Trump took over. Unbelievably racist things including swastikas, threats to kill people, Europa-Identity posts, etc.

One was a ycombinator-associated lawyer calling all muslims "Animals who fornicate with their sisters and with donkeys".

None of those people have been banned, none of those posts have been removed.

The left-wing bias on Facebook seems to be a helluva lot like the "war on Christmas". Doesn't seem to exist, but I really really wish it did.

The nature of the apple ecosystem is a boon to consumers, not a hinderance. I don't really give a #$!@$ about your profits as an iPhone developer. I care that google isn't sniffing all of my personal data, that I don't get viruses or phished, and that my phone just works.

Compare Apple to PCs. Windows is, has been, and always will be a security sh*tshow. Linux isn't interesting enough to scammers to be a security target yet, but it sure is ugly and chaotic. Apple just works for me.

By forcing Apple to be open, you're trying to both turn it into Linux by taking away the quality and usability of the apps available, and into Windows by .. making it a security shitshow.

Nobody has ever given me a real argument as to how Apple harms consumers in the iPhone. The only argument seems to be that app developers want a free ride. They want full access to do whatever they want, consumers be damned, without paying into the infrastructure which made their market available. (techno-libertarianism strikes again?)

You should know that a company called Phunware, which built Trump's campaign app, received 3x as much CARES stimulus per capita than anybody was supposed to get. If you voted Republican and donated to the GOP you are way more likely to get CARES checks.

They're a horoscope company which ripped off "investors" for $40m in a scam ICO 3 years ago, and they donated heavily to Trump.

A few years ago Riot Games turned me down for a position I was overqualified for because I’m not a hardcore gamer. I laughed it off because I knew that people who “give a shit” about the gaming industry expect to work 12 hours per day 300 days per year for a below market salary.
Re:Growl in Retirement on Sunday November 29, 2020 @05:20AM (#25244195)
I earnestly believe that OS developers and app developers who implement pop-ups or notifications or dialogue boxes would mostly fail the Sociopath test if they were made to take it before being allowed to commit code. This sort of attention-theft feels very malicious to me.
Re:Growl in Retirement on Sunday November 29, 2020 @04:12AM (#25243959)
I can say that Growl and desktop notifications are the very first thing I disable.

Not once on 20 years of computing did I ever think: “I want applications to interrupt what I’m doing and steal my limited ADHD focus because they’re lonely and need attention”.

Re:Ask HN: Why can't web browsers block pop-ups? on Thursday November 26, 2020 @04:06PM (#25223524)
At the absolute very least every single web browser should have the ability to ask:

* if you want to allow the pop-up * if you want to allow a site to open a new window/tab * if you want to allow a site to open a new pop-under window

This really shouldn't require special Greasemonkey scripts, block lists or commercial extensions. 99% of the time the user does not want that pop-up/pop-under/modal dialogue.

I'm starting to think that developers at almost all browsers are bribed by advertisers to allow these dark patterns.

Re:Ask HN: Why can't web browsers block pop-ups? on Thursday November 26, 2020 @03:38PM (#25223347)
It's been 31 years and web browsers are still utter trash. The developers at Safari, Firefox, Chrome and every other browser should be ashamed for allowing Pop-up and pop-under windows to even exist. It's functionality which needs to go away. If I don't explicitly open a link in a new window, that link should never, ever, EVER open in a new window.

Why is this still acceptable behavior? It has zero benefit to any end user.

I don’t know about Mozilla or Fedora, but have you ever interviewed with Wikimedia? It’s a circus of insanity. The most bizarre corporate culture ever; and the most psychotic receuiter i’ve ever come across. Whatever they choose, I choose the opposite.

Re:Salesforce is in talks to buy Slack on Wednesday November 25, 2020 @04:38PM (#25214585)
I moved the past 3 companies I work with from GitHub to self-hosted gitlab after the Microsoft purchase.

When Microsoft bought GitHub, all of the "Developer Evangelist" / "Open Source" evangelist crowd made all of those noise about how "Microsoft is great for our community! They ARE an open source company! Everything is wine and roses!"

Blech. I can't do business with evil companies.

Re:Salesforce is in talks to buy Slack on Wednesday November 25, 2020 @12:49PM (#25211954)
Well, it’s time to ditch slack. What is a good alternative that isn’t Microsoft or Google owned?

Whoa. Somehow my brain skipped over that 3rd sentence, and I read the whole thing 3 times. My bad.

What I get from this: The author decided to try and make an inciteful libertarian rant while smoking crystal meth.

Is there something I’m missing as to why this is on HN? Was this written by an ai, or is it’s relevance that it name drops Peter Thiel?

Re:Ask HN: Do you smoke cannabis while programming? on Monday November 23, 2020 @09:58AM (#25187341)
I've found myself in a situation now where I am almost unable to code without being stoned. When I began smoking, I got over more than a decade's of insecurity over being a sysdadmin who couldn't "really code". Now it's sort of intertwined. Without being stoned, I just stare at my screen then switch to a news site after a few minutes, then repeat.
Re:Ask HN: Do you smoke cannabis while programming? on Monday November 23, 2020 @09:57AM (#25187323)
You joke, but I actually prototyped a bgp-friendly api & bgp-driven authoritative DNS service for edge-computing over a weekend while on a cocktail of Mushrooms, MDMA and an incredible amount of bubble-hash. Ultimately I formed a small company around it and sold it 6 months later to a hosting company for $75k. I was stoned for 90% of the development work, and was also coming down off of an MDMA trip when I pitched the idea. I literally walked into a hosting company owned by a friend at random (after not seeing him for 3 years) and told him I'd built this thing and that he needed it for their cloud offering.

tl;dr brogrammer misses flouting his wealth and privilege in public with $15 fusion burritos and $18 well drinks so he did it in a blog instead.
Re:Nearly 12M Square Feet of Vacant Office Space in S.F on Tuesday October 27, 2020 @09:20AM (#24907110)
Also, when it comes to the stimulus programs, if you made too much $$ then you don't qualify. Even if I had qualified for unemployment, I wouldn't have qualified for the extra $300/week and the $1200 stimulus plans.

The only thing really keeping us afloat is we fled the USA and move to my wife's town where she owns a home and there's a low cost of living. Luckily I was raised with the philosophy that if I cannot afford to buy a thing in cash, I cannot afford to buy that thing, so I have never had any debt.

Re:Nearly 12M Square Feet of Vacant Office Space in S.F on Monday October 26, 2020 @07:57AM (#24895144)
Unemployment varies greatly state by state and rarely keeps up with the reality of the cost of living.

On top of this, it only applies if you lose your job due to "lay-offs". I've been laid off four times in my life, all 3 times the companies claimed they were not lay-offs and fought my claim. 2 times I was denied.

The third time I received unemployment benefits for 5 months. I received $4,000 in benefits then my former employer won an appeal, and my claim was deemed "fraud". I had to pay $8,500 back ($4,000 + $4,500 in "fraud fees").

If you are fired for "cause", "screw you, have a nice day".

8 months ago 10% of my company's engineering department (screw you, cloud passage) was fired "for cause" and replaced with cheap Belarusian contractors. This time I didn't even bother for unemployment, I didn't want to risk having to pay it back + 100% fines. I also do not get covid stimulus, and have had to sell my 401k to keep from being homeless.

America has no social net whatsoever. I do not qualify for unemployment, food stamps, or anything else even though I have been working my ass off and paying taxes for 25 years.
