Seems like most Git workflows are over-engineered. Here I'm exploring a workflow that gives just enough structure for the most agile teams.

Re:Python post-Guido on Thursday July 19, 2018 @12:05PM (#17567600)
Guido's leadership has really been what's kept Python so consistent during its evolution. This is in contrast to languages governed by committee or corporation.

Hopefully Python continues to be guided in this manner, and Guido can help rally the Python community around a successor.

We've just started to dabble in GraphQL, and like many others we've seen mixed results.

On the upside, we can construct complex queries than eliminate many consecutive RPCs that you'd end up with in a traditional REST API. At scale this should work wonderfully, greatly reducing the client/server latency for our realtime app.

On the downside, the tooling is still far behind. This is somewhat due to GraphQL being a younger technology so you have to give it some time. OTOH, I feel like you can get things off the ground with REST more quickly. Problems with GraphQL tend to be harder to reconcile due to the debug tooling handicap.

Some of our engineers take a little time ramping up to GraphQL due to its complex nature. This is probably a good thing in the long run though, since it stresses the importance of keeping RPCs to a minimum and eliminates having to sync or batch consecutive RPCs.

Overall I still think it's a win. The tooling should improve over time, and hopefully it will be a first-class citizen in IDEs and libraries soon. Until then, you've got to be prepared to muscle though it.

AAF | San Francisco | Onsite | Fulltime | https://aaf.com

Our engineering team will build a new live streaming platform that makes a truly interactive television experience. Our broadcasting team will use our new streaming platform to tell the story of a live sporting event that engages fans on a new level.

We are hiring for many different positions, including:

- iOS Engineer

- C++14/17 Engineer

- Fullstack Web Developer

Our backend is built on AWS using mostly Golang and just a sprinkle of hard-core C++. We are using Swift for iOS and Kotlin for Android.

We also plan on building apps for Apple TV, Fire TV, etc.

See full list of jobs here: https://jobs.lever.co/aaf

The linked article doesn't mention if this involves another manufacturing company, but the original article adds more detail and context.

Turns out there is an existing facility that already makes the iPhone SE for India, and this would just add a second model to that list.

Re:Show HN: C++11 immutable string on Wednesday June 04, 2014 @09:20AM (#7845355)
I can't say I'm 100% happy with the slicing notation. I played around with some other wacky things, but then settled on overloading operator() to get a concise syntax.

In principle, you use it similar to python--s(5,10) instead of s[5:10].

I would have maybe liked to end up with s[5,10], but the only way to overload operator[] like that is with a pair. Then you'd end up with s[{5,10}]. So I figured it would be best to stick with just s(5,10).

Re:Show HN: C++11 immutable string on Wednesday June 04, 2014 @09:12AM (#7845325)
The hash is FNV-1a, which should be faster that what you usually get in your standard library. It's also relatively easy to implement with constexpr so that you get those nice compile time hashes.

Show HN: C++11 immutable string

https://github.com/syvex/native

I'm looking for feedback on this approach to an immutable string (istring). The idea is to provide a super fast immutable string that can be efficiently passed to lambdas as well as be 100% thread safe.Another bonus is faster hashing. If a string literal is given to istring, then the hash is computed at compile time! Other strings will have their hashes cached for later use. The istring is...

Re:Do We Need a 37-Cent Coin? on Wednesday September 15, 2010 @12:14PM (#1694736)
After working with payment processing of credit, debit, EBT, and gift cards for the past few years, I have started using cash more.

For most transactions, a merchant is charged between 2-3% of the purchase price. This means that whatever you are buying could be 2-3% cheaper if cash were used instead. (However, for high-volume stores this may not be true since credit transactions take less time than getting change from cash.)

Furthermore, if someone steals your credit card number, you call them and have the charge removed. Does your credit card company take the loss with this? Not usually. The merchant that accepted the stolen card will pay. This in turn, makes the price of goods go up again.

These things take some toll on the overall economy. The real question becomes, how can we make cash transactions more efficient so that it improves commerce for individuals and improves the profits of businesses?
