Why? Do you think parking should be legal anywhere? Should all minor fines be fought in court against LLMs?

Re:Norway Salmon on Sunday August 02, 2026 @12:34PM (#49145997)
Strange to have an article about salmon farming drawbacks without mentioning escaped salmons polluting the wild salmon population. There has been a strong decrease in wild salmon as they lose the ability to migrate back up the river to lay their eggs due to breeding with escaped farming salmon.

I guess someone need to update https://0ver.org/ then.
Re:GPTs and Hallucination on Tuesday September 10, 2024 @12:26PM (#41502564)
I once again feel that a comparison to humans is fitting. We are also "trained" on a huge amount of input over a large amount of time. We will also try to guess the most natural continuation of our current prompt (setting). When asked about things it I can at times hallucinate things I was certain to be true.

It seems very natural to me that large advances in reasoning and logic in AI should come at the expense of output predictability and absolute precision.

How is this a debian maintainer going rogue? Maintainers making changes to default package build flags is quite normal and should be expected. These changes were even requested in the public bug tracker.

The mana cost is wrong on 3 out of 4 cards, no?
Re:X confirms plans for NSFW Communities on Saturday March 30, 2024 @09:52AM (#39874892)
This actually sounds like a solid move. There is obviously a huge market for a porn, nudity and kink related community. As proven by the decline of tumblr. I guess most US companies are too prudish to capitalize on the opportunity.

I guess the hard part is compartmentalizing the content spheres and public image perception.

Re:Do we need swap on modern systems? on Sunday March 10, 2024 @11:57AM (#39660171)
I strongly dislike swap on servers. I can understand some use cases laptops and one-off situations.

I would much rather have an application get killed by OOM killer than swapping. Swapping absolutely kills performance. Not having enough RAM is a faulty state and swapping hides that from admins resulting in hard to debug issues. The OOM killer leaves handy logs, swapping just degrades your service and needs to be correlated with RAM usage metrics.

My experience is also that swap will be used no matter how low (or was it high?) you set the swappiness number if the memory throughput is high enough, even if there is enough RAM available.

Host it your self. I'm doing that with libreddit. Gives me much better performance than the highly used public instances.
Replace browser with operating system or computer and expand extensions to user installable programs and it mostly still rings true. I believe users should be empowered to modify their installed applications as they see fit.

Cool project. Very happy about you taking the time to package it. I never use cli tools I cant install with apt because i log into a lot of servers. Hope i still remember this tool once i leaves sid and gets to stable.

It's Linux specific, but I would look into the in-kernel key management https://man7.org/linux/man-pages/man7/keyrings.7.html

Abandoning 0ver after only 20 years. I guess it's never to late to drop down to 0.9.9

At the time of the debate I actually played through this fan made Ace Attorney game http://aaonline.fr/search.php?search&criteria[title-contains....

Someone took the arguments from the debian technical committee mailing list and made it into text based game dialog. Might rip up some old wounds now though.

EU regulations forbid most subsidizing of goods withing country borders in general. There are some exceptions, like for example agriculture.

There were a lot of reports made before the cables were created indicating that prices would not change much. I believe these were created in good faith by incompetent people.

People in Norway are currently paying full price, but the government is refunding 90% of the cost above ~0.7 USD / KWh.

I do not think that effective transfer of energy from the north to the south would matter much. The price in the energy market is set by the actor willing to pay the most at any given moment.

If energy from the north was enough to influence the German or British prices then maybe, otherwise it wouldn't really matter.

Hrrmm, seems like last release was more than 10 years ago.

I agree that was not a high quality post from TorrenFreak. I do however also find the blogspam label to be unfair. TF has pushed some important agendas over the years.
Re:eBPF for tracing how Firefox uses page faults to load libraries on Wednesday February 23, 2022 @11:15AM (#30442670)
This presentation should give insight to some of the possibilities of ebpf. Strace is passive, ebpf can be active and make decisions in kernel space.

https://www.usenix.org/conference/nsdi21/presentation/ghigof...

Another example is controlling the scheduler with ebpf.

There is also this gem.

> Add username and password to protect your Files app by login. You can encrypt your password by using our md5() hash tool if you don't want the password to be exposed in the PHP file.

Now I realize it's probably not using md5, but it does not bode well.

Re:Spotify deletes 70 Joe Rogan episodes on Saturday February 05, 2022 @10:17AM (#30221862)
Very strange. I would probably pay my Spotify subscription just for the recommendation service. Did you use Discover Weekly actively? Did you share your account with children, at parties, etc.? I'm always puzzled by how Spotify recommendations seem to be so hit and miss for people. I wonder if it could be related to the type of music one listens to.
Re:Top Chess Engine Championship on Thursday February 03, 2022 @12:05PM (#30195084)
This website is niche enough that I think they are better of optimizing for what in-the-know users want than dumbing it down for people passing by. I recognize that is not really what you are asking for though, and I agree that they could do better with tool-tips and the likes.
Re:iPhone flaw exploited by second Israeli spy firm on Thursday February 03, 2022 @11:54AM (#30194914)
Not surprising as diplomat and spy is often interchangeable and there probably was a reason they were spied on.
