i guess its called the unfair advantage and there is even a book by the same name!
Re: on Tuesday February 10, 2026 @05:31PM (#46967897)
then you can passionaltey study people and find if they are not passionate in your passion then what passions they have and make their passions evolve your passions to passionately help their passions.
Re: on Tuesday February 10, 2026 @05:29PM (#46967878)
very valid point- but people do start with passion and iterate being the keyword based on understanding users and the market - however if you jump straight into competition/market without having interests or passion then you are driven by numbers and other people and have nothing to fall back onto in terms of purpose/vision/mission - so someone passionate in ornamental gourd futures can use the passion in it to underdtand other peoples/passion or interests in it and then in the process develop your understanding of them to feed what they are looking for coming from your evolved passion now - youtube was hotornot pics to begin with!
Re: on Tuesday February 10, 2026 @03:21PM (#46966265)
Why not check your passion and interest regardless of presence/lack of competition and then you can play a long game instead of being in a reactive state.
The problem with books in general and articles is that they always refer some more books to read or go indepth so it has caused me to move even far away from taking action- even the best/top 10 books is not the final list as they themselves refer another 20-50 books so i feel like its never ending cycle of slippery slope. I have completely given up on reading books and occassionaly chatgpt the problems i am currently faciing and go from there rather than ever reading a single book or article.

Why Soundcloud and instagram company size is so different?

Soeaking of consumer apps - Soundcoud has roughly 900 employee, Instagram had 18 employees at the time of acquisition. Why do companies hire employee for on such a scale, when other companies get similar things done for lesser employees. 900 vs 18. Do consumer apps need to have hundreds of employees to be successful? how come plenty of fish managed to get acquired for 450million with only one...

wow..excellent advice. You made me day and week!!
This is really helpful. I was being pushed to upgrade by the programmers i am trying to hire who say old website code is kind of spaghetti..and a new clean rewrite in node/ruby will go a long way in hiring good bayarea programmers.
it also helps to find more programmers here in the bayarea if i switch to ruby, node etc all the cool programming dudes that i want to hire -are not in php.
Based on the website and code base i have, i just want a rough estimate..are we talking 2 weeks, 2 months or 6 months here to rebuild in a new language? does it provide any advantage that the code was already written and api's work etc in the other language? trying to see if something can be reused or is it gonna be a total build from scatch new website..
Thanks for the detailed rundown. How long do you think it will take to rebuild the existing letslunch.com website from scatch in python? just a rough estimate without going for the nitty gritty of table sizes, length, number of lines of code.. letslunch has data of 90,000 users, 60,000 lunches, 12-15 dynamic pages and about 6 api's that we use from linkedin, facebook etc
website is kind of slow and some bugs..so i am wondering if refactoring or bugs fixing is worth it or switching to a new modern language.
