Can anyone comment on why this was downvoted? Is it not true? Even though sharing secrets with the Soviets would have been different from sharing them with Israel, if it was unsanctioned it still seems like this is a big deal.
Re:Cities are ending fares on transit. Here’s why on Tuesday July 18, 2023 @10:16AM (#36772666)
In Salt Lake City, Utah the trams are free in the downtown area. You only have to pay if you ride it outside of there. That seems like a nice way to do it. People who wouldn't normally ride it use it because it's free. And then maybe some of them end up using it more often when they see how nice it is.
Even completely prerecorded scripts can keep them on the phone for over 10 minutes. There's a funny series on YouTube, "Lenny", where they just play a recording of an old man who keeps asking questions and going off track:

For the US the parent said it was 200k migrants in one month. That's 2.4 million/year, or 0.7% of the population.

I immediately did some searches to see if I could find prints, or even high-quality images of some of the pieces. Alternatively, I think it could be fun to try to recreate the works of art myself.
Somewhat related, there's a series of German videos made for kids that show how a car is manufactured. It's mostly the bodywork and assembly, not engine stuff, but it's still a good overview. If you're interested in this stuff, it could be worth watching, even if you don't understand German.

Re:The state of open-source in 3D printing in 2023 on Saturday April 01, 2023 @08:30PM (#35405741)
Wouldn't you assume that closed-source products would generally have a competitive advantage against open-source products? Especially for products where most of the contributions to the project are from the company selling it. With closed-source you have to worry less about people simply selling copies of your design without having to have invested in any of the design process. Competitors also can't as easily include your design improvements into their products. And, there's definitely a cost associated with sharing internal designs.
Re:There's something off about LED bulbs on Thursday March 30, 2023 @12:04PM (#35374882)
Are you sure those are the same bulbs? The ultra efficient versions sold on Amazon have reviews going back to 2017. Supposedly the Dubai-style bulbs were only available in Dubai even a few years ago.
Re:Arduino Uno R4 on Sunday March 26, 2023 @07:52PM (#35321033)
But that Arduino tooling and all the libraries, tutorials, etc. wouldn't exist if nobody had bought Arduinos. If I'm just buying a few boards for personal projects I like to support companies that provide more than just hardware to the maker community.
Uniscuit would be bread. Biscuit translates to "twice cooked" in French. This is similar to biscotti which translates to the same thing in Italian. Fun fact that many French and Italians don't even realize.
I've heard stories from relatives about a funhouse like that on Coney Island. Supposedly there was a dark maze section with clowns that would walk around and shock you. As I got older I assumed some of it had to be made up. But at least part of the story is corroborated in this article about the Steeplechase Park:

It doesn't look like they are building risk into the playgrounds, as much as they are building the feeling of risk. which isn't necessarily a bad thing. This seems like a compromise that should be seen as better, or at least acceptable to both extremes of parents.

"The maximum fall height in the Triitopia structure’s spiderweb is 1.8 metres." That's not a risky fall, if you're falling onto a rope net.

Also, "The Triitopia tower is encased with boards and netting to ensure no child can take a tumble from a height above three metres." Kids used to climb on the outside and on top of tall playground structures like that. But they're making sure this much more difficult to attempt. This is not a criticism, just my observations.

Re:Tungsten Gold Plated Bar on Saturday March 18, 2023 @01:20PM (#35211060)
Given that companies in China are blatantly selling forgeries of US gold coins[1], it appears that they aren't too worried about the consequences. Though maybe it would start to attract more attention if they began counterfeiting larger value items such as these gold bars.

Re:Tiny Tapeout 3: Create and fab your own chip design on Sunday March 05, 2023 @11:28AM (#35031049)
Tiny Tapeout 3 submissions are now active. Design your own chip and it will be added to a large chip containing everyone's submission. Physical chips will be created of the final combined design with access to all of the individual designs.
Re:Paper Models of Vintage Computers on Friday February 24, 2023 @08:31PM (#34932816)
Even an ESP32 is probably more powerful than every single one of those computers, with the exception of the GameCube. You can emulate NES games on that micro-controller.
Do you mean they just pronounce the "eur" part like in French? Or do they actually say day-rye-eur? It would sound really weird to pronounce the word like in French.
Re:Astonishingly strong US jobs report sends stocks sinking on Friday February 03, 2023 @10:36AM (#34642433)
And here's a list of countries ranked by median income based on data from the World Bank. The US is "only" 5th by this measure.

https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/median-in...

Were the duration of the phases shortened? The quote makes it sound like the duration was kept the same, just that the following phase started before the end of the previous phase.
Re:The contagious visual blandness of Netflix on Sunday January 22, 2023 @10:48AM (#34478487)
That's not at all what he meant. He was saying that in both cases the stunt man is getting injured, but in the case of digital it doesn't look better than CGI, so at that point why not just do CGI and eliminate the injuries.
Captured by Robots also did this, but his look like humanoid robots and have conversations with the singer which are part of the act. The type of music isn't for everybody (or most people). But if you're musically open I'd recommend checking out one of his shows if he's in town. It's an entertaining performance.

I love nomographs. My favorite is this Van-der-Pol nomograph that calculates asphalt stiffness for different temperatures, penetration amplitudes, and loading rates. https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Hasan-Al-Mosawe/publica...
Re:300M Resolution SF Forecast on Thursday October 27, 2022 @09:15PM (#33366294)
Also note that it should be "300 meter resolution". You don't use a plural when using it as an adjective. I only point this out to help people because this is a common grammar mistake for non-native speakers.
Re:I tricked myself into working out 3 times per week on Sunday September 04, 2022 @01:52PM (#32715687)
Also, you don't need to run continuously. It's perfectly fine to run for a couple minutes and then walk a bit. I think people's definitions of exercise are often too strict, or constrained.

Another way to get into running is to start by just going for a brisk walk and run a little bit when you feel like it. That's how I got into trail running. I was going for long hikes, and at some point I started jogging short sections (maybe only 30 seconds) when I was feeling good. By doing this I could limit the total amount of running I was doing while still getting a good workout in.

Re:Athletics at the 1904 Summer Olympics: Men's Marathon on Wednesday August 31, 2022 @09:40PM (#32670774)
If you think that's crazy, read about the old Tour de France races. The stages were significantly longer than they are now (300 km to 480 km), and for a while the bikes only had two speeds. To change which gear you were in you had to take the wheel off and flip it around.

In the 1913 Tour, Eugène Christophe broke his fork. He walked two hours to the nearest blacksmith, spent 3 hours repairing the fork himself (otherwise it would have been outside help), and he still got a time penalty because he let a little boy pump the bellows for him.

Was the blender part one of these:

You could try printing it yourself, or using a 3D printing service to get a replacement. It would be interesting to see how different material options hold up.

Re:TI-83 Plus One More on Sunday July 31, 2022 @10:23AM (#32295669)
A more descriptive title would be, "TI-83 LCD ribbon repair".

I have my old TI-86 which seems to have the same problem so I'll have to try the same technique.

The TI calculators were amazing environments for learning assembly. There are a bunch of good tutorials and the computer is relatively simple and you get direct access to the display.
