It always amazes me [wrongly] how much money niche sites/services can make.
Awesome :) Will drop you a note now!
Great thanks! Glad you like it! We've some ideas - we think it'd make a cool iPad app and have also explored merchandising opportunites but for now we are just enjoying seeing people come to a site we created! It's a bit of a buzz for us and if it doesn't make any money but people like our site, and get inspired by our content, then that's a real win for us.
Hi guys,

We launched our weekend project about 2 weeks ago (http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5206662). And have made a lot of improvements, including the ability to sign up to daily emails.

However, our big development is we found the layout of our site played nicely to include tributes of people who have changed the world - like Steve Jobs. So on some days, we will provide slideshows, like this one which showcase an indivduals best quotes.

So our site has morphed into a daily inspiration site but also tribute pages to those who inspire us the most.

We'd love to hear your feedback if you have any.

Thanks, sw1205 and jebarnes88

Re:My favorite ever Aaron Swartz quote - Be Curious on Friday February 15, 2013 @10:17AM (#5226523)
For full disclosure - my friend (sw007) and I run this site. We don't make money from the site - it's just a fun project. But this is one of our favorite ever quotes and figured HN crowd would like it and we wanted to share it with you as it not a particularly well known quote.

Thanks

Steve

Thanks - really appreciate it. Sorry again.
It's not the first 11,000 - it seems they could have 100,000 apply but they select which 11,000 go in to the club. So you may be wasting your time writing a bot..

Get Inspired

Around 2 months ago I wrote this post on HN -http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=3373042It told the story of a young man named Harry Moseley who died of brain cancer at the age of 11. In the post Harry's story was told and the sheer power of the internet was shown - how a young boy I'd never met had inspired me. How the internet bought me to his attention, how I used the internet to raise...

Ah no, so I run overground and work out the routes before each run - so I actually run a lot further than the tracks but I hit every tube station and get a picture outside each one!

What the Internet has done for me...

10 weeks ago I took on the challenge of running the entire London Underground for Harry Moseley's charity Help Harry Help Others (HelpHarryHelpOthers.com). I wanted to run 406 miles, travel through all 272 tube stops and complete every single tube line. Most importantly though I wanted to raise £10,000 for Harry's charity, I hope I can raise a £100,000.The internet has changed many things - how...

Ask HN: What is the nicest thing you have ever done?

I was chatting to a friend the other day who told me the most unbelievable story. To cut a long story short he told me how he met a person at the airport who was grief stricken - his mum had just been in a major accident and he had to get home from Barcelona airport to his home in Oxford. His dad had already died and he had no other family to speak of.This man also had no money. He was at the...

This is great - thanks for all your comments guys. I will read through all these links and build them into the presentation. I will also share the presentation with you all if any of you are interested.

Ask HN: Ideas on how to change the Culture at a big Corporate Bank

Hi guys,I work for a large bank and work in the technology part of that bank. I am trying to put a presentation together with the aim of trying to highlight ways of changing the culture within the technology part of the bank.Currently I work in a sterile, dreary office. We have to wear suits. We are bogged down by process and the people I work with have ideas, good ideas, but have not got the...

Re:Ask HN: Why is Google not offering real time analytics? on Tuesday January 04, 2011 @05:20PM (#2068775)
I find getclicky a good alternative. It also has a neat iPhone app - clickytouch.
Re: Ask HN: A possible Delicious Alternative? on Thursday December 23, 2010 @09:49AM (#2034515)
Thanks for the feedback - we will look at the bug you mention now.

To change your backdrop there is an option 'change your backdrop' under 'create a new bookmark' - we can make that stand out more. You can then use some of our sample ones or upload your own - once clicked or uploaded it saves it automatically.

The first way we differ is that we are free, I appreciate people may be willing to pay for their service but for now we are free and all users who sign up now will not have to pay. Secondly is that I guess we are a bookmarking site aimed at more creative types. Pinboard is a great site functionailty wise and speed wise but you could argue it lacks in appearance. We hope that we offer a lot of the functionality Pinboard do but also you can bookmark in a nice looking site.

We have modertators who will look to fight spam and if we eventually add a fee for the service this should also prevent it.

I should rephrase - we will do everything in our power to ensure we won't close down.

Thanks for the feedback

Yes I should edit my comment - it is not closing down but favilous remains an alternative, we hope a credible one!
Re: Ask HN: A possible Delicious Alternative? on Thursday December 23, 2010 @09:41AM (#2034482)
Specifically to our site - if you see an article you like but don't have to read it, then you can use our bookmark it with 1 click of a button and save it to view later. You can also organise all your bookmarks in an easy way and follow people who you find bookmark interesting things.
Re: Ask HN: A possible Delicious Alternative? on Thursday December 23, 2010 @09:31AM (#2034457)
It was only meant to be a light hearted joke. However if you want a serious reply - Yahoo bought Delicious and then a few years later they decide they want to possibly close down Delicious thus panicking users everywhere. We are focused on our userbase and would not want to put our site, which some of our users rely on, in any danger of closing and thereby forcing users to lose their bookmarks.
Re: Ask HN: A possible Delicious Alternative? on Thursday December 23, 2010 @09:18AM (#2034419)
With Delicious closing down we thought we would recommend our bookmarking site - Favilous. We promise never to sell to Yahoo so there will be no chance of us closing down! We had been working on a major revamp of the site and it just so happened Delicious made their announcement (or didn't make their announcement!) when we were about to press the launch button.

What do we offer?

Bookmark quickly and effectively for free.

Attractive site with users having the ability to customise backgrounds and arrange bookmarks in categories.

Save articles for viewing later - so now you can bookmark and view sites later, a combination we do not think exists.

Users can see what sites are hot and what sites are popular.

Social - Follow people who bookmark things of interest.

Bookmark things on the fly with a click of a button and it saves it to your inbox for viewing later.

View what the community is bookmarking - this page is of great value as it offers descriptions of the sites that are being bookmarked.

Import bookmarks from various sources including delicious.

Background We are a 2 man startup from the UK. We are bootstrapped. We have thousands of links already bookmarked from thousands of different users.

We would love to know what you think and what feedback you may have so that we can improve the service for new and existing users.

thanks!

My friend and I have been working on a new bookmarking service - http://favilous.com - we are free, and we are currently working on allowing users to import delicious bookmarks.

How is this different to frid.ge or neetly.com?
Re:Ask HN: How can banks improve their branches? on Thursday December 02, 2010 @10:03AM (#1962293)
Yes great point - I have never understood why all branch's are only open whilst we are at work
Here was the original thread - http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=1794196

There was some great discussion around it from HN members, I wonder if the person who created the plugin read the comments?
