“building for the sake of building” refers to _you_ doing the building

Better yet: keep going to therapy and start lifting weights!
Can you elaborate on this? My gut agrees with you 100%, but I can't puzzle it out.

I think you can - there is a link to sign up for the newsletter at the bottom of the page
Nice!!
A high tolerance for risk
Re:Ask HN: Should I buy a boat and live off the grid? on Thursday August 03, 2017 @08:50PM (#14925463)
You should, boats are rad. In my experience it won't be as cheap as you think - but it is still awesome!
Re:Show HN: New calendar app idea on Tuesday June 07, 2016 @11:32AM (#11855164)
I just want to add to the chorus of people saying they would pay for this. I too would be delighted to pay for this app. Looks AWESOME, thank you for creating it!
Re:ThingieQuery: $19 SQL IDE for Excel on Wednesday April 27, 2016 @03:26PM (#11583709)
That is AWESOME! Nice work!

If I can offer a button nitpick - I suggest "Try it out for free!" in big text, and "Version 1.5.248.1, 2016-04-26" in small text. Maybe as simple as wrapping the version info in a <small> tag.

Certainly not with that attitude.

Writing software - even hard, complex software - isn't even remotely comparable to a space program.

Re:Side Projects on Friday April 01, 2016 @07:03PM (#11409192)
I agree 100%. It has gotten easier to turn a side project into a business.

My take is that it has gotten easier enough that fewer folks are pursuing VC, opting to bootstrap instead. It's not that fewer side projects are happening - more side projects are happening. Fewer of them need VC money to succeed/scale/generate meaningful revenue, so VCs are seeing fewer side projects.

The great thing about exercise is there is no minimum effective dose.

Pushups are a great exercise, and they are more of a full-body exercise than they appear to be. They're an excellent starting point!

Paging Uber ... I am kidding, kind of. I do wonder what would happen if a well-capitalized startup did something in this space. Provide services directly based on the hope/promise/belief of future repayment?

Nice! I see you're on Shopify - I started a fraud prevention app that's great for Shopify stores. Would you be willing to try the free trial? I'd love to hear what a fellow HNer thinks of it.

Re:Show HN: PitchXO – Track your pitches on Thursday June 26, 2014 @12:39PM (#7950432)
If you haven't considered it already - this might be a great product for "pay only if you succeed" pricing. Might be easier to get people to pay, say, $5k from someone who has just raised $10m than $200 from someone who almost by definition has nothing.
Bock and the author both miss the same point: the thing that helps you learn to think in a rigorous way is to study something that does not come naturally to you.

I see it as the difference between learning a new skill and practicing an existing one. The former forces you to focus completely, while the latter tolerates inattention.

Re:Script-injected "async scripts" considered harmful on Tuesday May 20, 2014 @01:53PM (#7774033)
+1 for periodic re-examination of best practices.
I run a product in this space (https://www.merchantprotector.net) and I'm quite impressed with Sift Science's pricing.

No charge for the first 10k transactions/month is impressive.

Re:Optimizely Raises $57 Million on Monday May 05, 2014 @12:14PM (#7699379)
Weirdly, middle-click (at least for me) does open the link in a new tab. If I were to venture a guess, it would be that that behavior was unintentional. If it wasn't, I'm also curious about the logic behind it.
You could use DeleteItLater to prevent Buffer Overflow.

Sorry, I'll show myself out.

Re:The New Linode Cloud: SSDs, Double RAM and much more on Thursday April 17, 2014 @11:25AM (#7604154)
It seems to be the Optimizely js, which could mean they are A/B testing something about their pricing grid.

I'd really like to know the results of the test.

Re:Resume Republic – Awesome Online Resume Templates on Friday April 04, 2014 @11:08AM (#7531835)
I disagree - it's hard to stay in business if you don't make money. The fact that someone else might offer a similar product for free has stopped, e.g. the makers of premium website themes from making huge piles of money.

There's definitely a hurdle to be overcome in marketing products to those people least likely to have money lying around, but I think that's mostly a question of demonstrating value. People will buy it if they think it's worth it.

I'll be the Pollyanna here and say: maybe! Probably not this iteration, but maybe!

Features I'd suggest: * Some explanation, in a big font, of what we are seeing on the homepage of sheetjs.com ("SheetJS lets you get more information out of your data, instantly") * A big button that takes me to a sample sheet, with some sample queries I can run. Basically, a live tutorial

Good luck, this looks cool!

Re:How to Interpret Ridiculous Web Design Job Posts on Saturday March 08, 2014 @08:39PM (#7367100)
I recently had occasion to write a job description for a web design job. It was surprisingly hard, and I recommend it as an exercise to anyone frustrated with the language of job postings.

I wound up taking refuge in the phrase "you'll need one or more of the following skills" and then describing my unicorn candidate. Using that, I worried a little less about lacking the "language" of the particular job. And, I think, I was able to avoid scaring away some strong candidates who might not have otherwise applied.

Re:Creating a New Business Model for Cartoonists on Saturday March 01, 2014 @12:55PM (#7325270)
This is a really cool concept and looks nicely executed. Great work! Please keep us posted on progress if you can.

I'm interested to know how you decided on pricing being based on # of employees in the organization. Can you expand on that decision?

Re:Which is less expensive: Amazon or self-hosted? on Thursday February 13, 2014 @12:23PM (#7232640)
OTOH, you may have to buy the self-hosted server, which could sway the cost calculation back in favor of cloud hosting.
Congrats on the raise! Celery is an awesome product and currently the BEST option out there for taking preorders.
Re:Introducing Shopify Mobile on Thursday January 02, 2014 @07:18PM (#7003407)
This is my #1 feature request for Shopify. I'm still a VERY VERY VERY happy customer, but fully realized multi-language support would be a life changing feature.
Re:Introducing Open Salaries at Buffer on Friday December 20, 2013 @11:41AM (#6942264)
No.

The employment contract is a business arrangement. Describing it in such value-laden terms does a disservice to all parties.

One is employed presumably because the arrangement is mutually beneficial; if it stops being mutually beneficial the arrangement is renegotiated or terminated.
