Ask HN: What is the best way to revise an old language/technology?

I used to be a Java nerd back in college, but ever since then I haven't touched it. My work for the last 3-4 years has mostly been in Python and C++, and I have forgotten a lot of in's and out's of Java. So, what is the best (and fast) way to get back in the groove with a language? Any suggestions on small projects that make you use (and hence revise) old languages that you know already?A...

Re:Google's API is Back on Thursday April 10, 2008 @01:26PM (#160100)
Yes, thats interesting... I wonder if they want to keep it quite (by making this info hard to find) or the developers of the API didn't think it through...

Thanks for sharing this... But isn't the AJAX Search API to be used from within the browser (client) rather than from a central server?

Ask PG: API for Hacker News?

Hi PG,Are there any plans for a basic API for Hacker News? These functions will be useful:1. List of recent/top stories (we can get this from the RSS feed though).2. List of all users who upmodded a story.3. All stories submitted by a user.4. All stories upmodded by a user. The response could be in JSON or any other format...Arnav

Ask YC: What do you think of Yadster's search-feedback-update mechanism?

http://www.yadster.com

Please try out Yadster and leave your comments/feedback...Yadster takes feedback from the searcher on which results they like, and then changes the original query to bring them better results. This is intended to be a workaround for repeatedly changing the query and re-searching for hours in Google, when you are looking for something general.

I am working on a startup called 'Yadster'. We are trying to build new collaborative filtering algorithms (like those based on trust/reputation) are trying to apply them to applications like Search and News. We have a basic prototype working, but a lot still needs to be done... :)

We are based in Edinburgh, Scotland. We are working on a new trust-based collaborative filtering algorithm and looking to apply it to domains like Search and News.

Where to look for Python developers?

I am working on a collaborative filtering startup and looking for a partner/developer who has experience in building scalable high-performance websites in Python. The geographic location doesn't matter as we are willing to work and collaborate online.Where should I look for him/her? Any ideas...

Re:Are you going to change the world? (Really?) on Saturday September 22, 2007 @11:47PM (#58457)
I believe doing your best work, is the best way of helping the world. If you love what you are doing, if you are one with yourself when you are doing it, you are giving the most you can ever give to the world.

All religions say that selflessness is the path to happiness and enlightenment. I think true selflessness can only be achieved when you are truly at one with your work and its flow, when you see it all around you, and you loose yourself in it...

Even though Michaelangelo didn't cure any life threatening diseases he did make something that gives everyone who watches it, a moment of beauty, a moment of perfection, a moment of heaven. I think that gift is no less than any other.

I hope I gave you something to think about. This was my good deed of the day... :)

I also recommend an old Japanese movie by Akira Kurosawa called 'Ikiru'. It has a nice perspective on the topic.

Democracy has a weird tendency of favoring idiocy.

No, Google will be killed by people who it rejected to take.
