Re:Amazon Closing Fresh and Go Stores on Tuesday January 27, 2026 @12:56PM (#46783635)
Disappointing. The shopping experience is mediocre and prices/quality are no better than other local supermarkets.

However, I love my local Amazon Fresh store because it's a super convenient Amazon return location...

Re:Mojang to Require a Microsoft Account to Play Minecraft on Tuesday March 01, 2022 @11:39AM (#30516351)
I have an ancient minecraft account (so old I paypal'ed 9 euro to Mojang) that doesn't have an email associated with it. Does anybody have experience with MS helping recover an older MC account?

Re:Daniel Mendelsohn on the Odyssey on Monday August 16, 2021 @12:55PM (#28200210)
If anyone is interested in more in depth examinations of parts of the Odyssey I would recommend 'Watch What You Hear: Penelope's Dream Of Twenty Geese' by Edward Teach(The Last Psychiarist). https://www.amazon.com/Watch-What-You-Hear-Penelopes/dp/1734... It is a a "rigorous psychoanalytic interpretation of the Homeric dream of twenty geese" and although can be tough to get into I dound it a very rewarding mental journey.
Did a bird write this study?
Re:Science of Aging Is Focus of New Bakar Research Institute on Thursday February 11, 2021 @12:03PM (#26104058)
“For aging research, the Bay Area is one of the best places in the world to be,”

I've been laughing about this fact for years. Give a guy a billion dollars and all of a sudden he wants to live forever.

I read the same "fact"* in Graham Robb's 'The Discovery of France".

*scare quotes because I've only seen one reference

This is an interesting hypothesis, even though on first blush it seems obviously wrong. I'm glad the article was more nuanced than the headline.

This reminded me of an interesting tidbit from Graham Robb's book 'The Discovery of France'. He mentions the pre-industrial peasantry (in some extremely rural areas) living in a similar manner. During the winter when there were stretches of time where it was too harsh to do any productive work, the peasants just stayed inside. Food/calories were scarce enough even in the best of times so activity was limited to wake up, eat a bit, sleep, repeat.

Yes it is, but launching it from the system tray icon forces you to use their interface and it is a pain. Like I said, this specific issue is not a deal breaker, but if their other features take a turn for the worse the way this has then it would be time for a change.
I have been a long-time Dropbox+ (and now Dropbox Family) user. I don't mind so much that it is more expensive than the paid personal G/M offerings. It (usually) just works for me, however over the last year annoyances have crept in. Specifically the new File Explorer interface. It is incredibly slow and inefficient and I curse myself every time I open it instead of through the native Windows File Explorer. Hope that gets fixed soon. That annoyance alone is probably not enough to drive me to another service, assuming other features don't get degraded. Paying 200$ for a product that fights you is not something i plan on doing for a long time...
Re:Japanese Company Makes CBD from Orange Peels on Thursday May 28, 2020 @11:58AM (#23338796)
Out of the peels? Perhaps. It depends on the kinds of chemicals that are in there. The question is, why bother? This quora thread goes over some of the reasons why synthesizing THC is a fairly pointless exercise (barring cetain highly specific conditions such as unavailability of hemp etc). https://www.quora.com/Can-THC-be-synthesized-Can-you-make-TH...
Re:Japanese Company Makes CBD from Orange Peels on Thursday May 28, 2020 @11:35AM (#23338515)
Ah, yet another company that has a process to create CBD from the terpenes found in orange peels. This isn't the isolation of CBD, as you would from hemp, but the creation of CBD from precursors using chemistry. I don't know if this is usually the labroots style, but this is a press release disguised as an article.
Re:Sprint Google Voice integration ends June 1, 2018 on Monday April 16, 2018 @06:05PM (#16853274)
This service was a big help to anyone who spent long portions of the day in reception-less areas.
One of the interesting effects of Prop 65 is that it allows private citizens to bring suit alleging violations. This has wrought a similar effect to the ADA violations lawsuit racket.

I don't think there is enough public pressure to get this changed now, but I'm glad more people are becoming aware of how these "well meaning" regulations can be abused.

Re:The Remarkable Comeback of Przewalski’s Horse on Tuesday October 10, 2017 @04:16PM (#15445004)
If you are in QC and want to see a P-Horse, the Granby Zoo has a small herd. They are neat to see in person, your brain says "horse" and then "wait a minute, something is slightly off here".
Re:Biologists find cave life that may be 50k years old on Sunday February 19, 2017 @11:03AM (#13680284)
I'm cautiously optimistic about these findings. As long as she doesn't name them something like 'Penelope Deserves Tenure-01'* we should be good...
