oops yes!

> setting a daily target of 1.2–1.6 grammes per kilogramme of body weight, 50-100 per cent above the longstanding recommended dietary allowance of 0.8g

This is a good range for improving for maintaining your body composition; preserving or building muscle. Fitness coaches are recommending 2.2g/lb (1g per lb) or even more which doesn't have much scientific backing. 1.6g/kg seems to be the max that will benefit muscle gain.

On the other hand, there are some (Valter Longo, biologist at UCLA) who say that such high protein will reduce your overall longevity. He recommends 0.36g protein per lb body weight.

I don't know what to do with this info. Personally, I stay around 1.2g protein/lb (and exercise) as a middle ground.

I think land-value taxation, with a cap on properties based on income (and wealth) for your first home, is the way.

I do think there is something special about the idea of home, and that home ownership should be encouraged. It brings people stability. People shouldn't be pushed out just because others have more income than them.

At the same time, we do need property taxes. In California, rate increases are capped, so older owners often pay pennies compared to new homeowners. Harmonize the taxes, while capping it.

I think they've legitimately been fumbling the frontier race, but fortunately with not too much impact to their profits.

See for example the exodus of talent this year, triggered by mismanagement and politics. They still have a lot of talent but they've lost a lot.

Also, competition with Google Cloud for compute resources, less urgency and focus than the competitors, and (strange to say) not as much user LLM behavior data to feed to RL for coding, work, etc.

But I think they will keep catching up and stay relevant for a good class of LLM use cases.

Re:Feds Target AI Critics as "Foreign Agents" on Wednesday September 23, 2026 @10:50PM (#49825631)
There can be foreign agents criticizing AI, but not all people criticizing AI are foreign agents.

Trump is painting critics with a wide brush:

"The people that say AI is going to destroy the World, and that Data Centers are bad for your neighborhood, are the same people that said, just a short time ago, that the World would be extinguished by “Climate Change.” That HOAX never worked out for them, and now they’re on to the next one. These people are Revolutionaries, but Revolutionaries for a Bad and Evil Cause. Soon you’ll find out they’re working for people that do not have the best interests of the United States in mind!"

It was an attack by OpenAI though (and most of the coverage I saw focused on how their agents infiltrated Hugging Face)
Re:Feds Target AI Critics as "Foreign Agents" on Wednesday September 23, 2026 @10:46PM (#49825592)
When the CEOs of these companies are saying that we will risk extinction and jobs will be decimated, why do you even need a "foreign agent"?
Maybe because the headline is misleading? (because there's no connection to the Hugging Face attack)

That said, it's the second day and it's still on the front page.

Re:Record-High 89% in U.S. Say Government Corruption Widespread on Friday September 04, 2026 @07:15PM (#49571300)
The most blatant recent case is Trump selling early access to his Truth Social posts

https://abcnews.com/Politics/profoundly-corrupt-trump-sued-f...

California is also over regulated.
California is also adding a lot of battery storage… but why are electricity prices falling in Australia and not in CA? Are they outpacing us?
Re:Gemini 3.7 Flash on Friday August 14, 2026 @01:58AM (#49295178)
Yes I will look into it now but there’s no cross reference from GCP, and why are there two ways? And why did the GCP way require all these APIs enabled while AI studio didn’t?
Re:Gemini 3.7 Flash on Thursday August 13, 2026 @10:08PM (#49294020)
Personally I went to https://console.cloud.google.com since I already had some GCP projects. Then I searched for Gemini API Key. It brought me to https://console.cloud.google.com/agent-platform/studio/setti.... Then, there was a banner saying "Enable APIs to access full platform capabilities." Then, I did that, which took quite a while (minutes). Finally, I was able to see the way to create an API key.

The fact that there's two ways to get keys is also very confusing.

How much does OpenAI actually control the way the data centers are built and deployed?

I don’t know much about the impact of their data centers compared to others, but there weren’t many (if any) concrete commitments in this letter. The promises all seem like areas that even an evil corporation could pay lip service to.

Sorting and folding laundry is one of the most tedious chores in our household. Do you have kids?
Re:Cleaning up after AI rockstar developers on Tuesday June 09, 2026 @10:48AM (#48461883)
Did you use AI to rewrite it?
Since one of the major donors is Germany, I also like to consider this as reparations for WWII. I wish people in Poland would realize more how generous the EU has been to them.
Google’s training and running all their stuff on ASICs, seems to be working out well.
Re:Gifted children are special needs children on Thursday October 09, 2025 @05:02AM (#45525232)
Perhaps, but then surely reading should be part of the curriculum at least by by grade 1 or 2 then?

But if reading is part of the curriculum (which it generally is for K and certainly for the years after) then it’s just the reality that there will be big differences in ability and trying to have everyone go at the same pace doesn’t serve either early or late readers.

Re:Gifted children are special needs children on Tuesday October 07, 2025 @10:35AM (#45503586)
If Kindergarten were just play based schooling then I’d agree with you. But there is an academic component, for example learning to read, and students abilities can be radically different.
Re:You want to meet me, don't make me work for it on Tuesday September 30, 2025 @08:33PM (#45432986)
calendly / cal.com solves this problem, just give them a link.
Also it makes a lot of difference where you are. Scandinavians rarely wear sunscreen but their UV index is much lower than, say, California, let alone Australia.
You could make multiple pools, having separate ones carved out for research and advanced technology.

A lot of H1Bs are not working on anything you described though.

Re:New Mexico is first state in US to offer universal child care on Tuesday September 09, 2025 @09:10PM (#45191826)
I think I muddled my point, I think with abundance we should offer childcare to people who have jobs. Even maybe some hours for those that don’t too.
Re:New Mexico is first state in US to offer universal child care on Tuesday September 09, 2025 @11:56AM (#45183849)
If AI does actually lead to large economic gains but also high unemployment, then we should be able to invest most in social programs like this and let people make a good living providing them. (as well as all other workers, through wage subsidies)

That said, if you don’t have a job… do you need childcare? But I’m assuming there will still be enough demand from those employed

He’s not vibe coding though
Sure, but not counting calories is even more imprecise. For many of us our built-in "calorimeters" are broken and we need to find other ways to limit intake. For example, restricting food by time or by type of food, or calorie counting.
