It's exactly what you'd expect from Europe: not as horrible as you'd expect Europe to be?
It's the most important election of our lifetime... For the fourth time in a row!
Re:I will no longer upload to NEW on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @08:54AM (#50258415)
I think iTerm 2 jumped the shark when the author started implementing a homemade web browser into it.

That AI image is pretty baffling though. Setting aside the pointlessness of displaying an image in the context menu, it even looks like it was made with ancient stable diffusion from 2024 or something, modern image generators are "better" than that. I wonder when it was put in.

Re:Danish Government silently drops plan to dump MS Office on Saturday October 24, 2026 @05:52PM (#50225730)
My wife cried when I tried to make her use LibreOffice.
Sounds like they trained it on Boxxy or Kat from Sam and Kat. I guess it does sound like a human talking but in an affected unnatural way.

Anything but that!

Re:Photopea creator weighs in on Photosuite project on Monday October 05, 2026 @10:47PM (#49973579)
I saw someone say that we're going to go back to a situation like the 70s where software is technically copyrightable but there's no reason to bother. Maybe Stallman's dream will finally come true.
Re:Photopea creator weighs in on Photosuite project on Monday October 05, 2026 @10:39PM (#49973515)
And the comment where he's "explaining" the code is clearly LLM written. Very nice.
Okay, so you acknowledge that orchestrated or not, the native populations of European countries are going extinct and ultimately are going to be replaced. Japan doesn't want that, as it's an existential issue for their nation. I would argue possibly THE most existential issue a nation can face.

I would personally argue that it IS orchestrated, as this massive change happened in 50 years after 1000+ years of no change, but it's not relevant to the actual outcome. Call it a racist conspiracy theory all you want, people are becoming immune to that strategy.

It's not a theory, let alone a conspiracy one. It's a plain and simple fact. It's why we're having this conversation in the first place. Britain went from 88% native British in 2000 to 73% in 2025. They will become a minority in their own country in the next 50 years. Similar has happened in Sweden, Germany, France, many others.

What are you even trying to imply by posting that link?

Having the population shrink and just letting the wheels fall off is vastly superior to ethnically cleansing your own country by importing a bunch of foreigners. At least you can rebuild from the first scenario.
Re:OpenAI is well positioned to fast-follow Jev on Tuesday September 22, 2026 @11:25AM (#49802883)
Why is everybody so obsessed with it? There are 2 Jev posts on the front page even now, I feel like I'm taking crazy pills.

This is what happens when a society stops believing in God.
Re:Building a Linux GPU Driver for the M4 Mac Mini in One Month on Wednesday September 16, 2026 @09:55AM (#49727107)
I'm currently traveling but I'll post it tomorrow. That said, you could recreate it yourself by just cloning the Asahi repos and asking Astra to make it work on the M3. I followed along with Alyssa Rosenzweig's original series of articles and tried to reproduce the milestones that she did in the same order to sanity check the work. The whole thing took about a week.
Re:Building a Linux GPU Driver for the M4 Mac Mini in One Month on Wednesday September 16, 2026 @05:37AM (#49724026)
Damn, I did exactly this already for the M3 and got it working. Was hoping to make a post about it but this kinda scoops it. Bravo!
Re:GPT-6 Astra on Friday September 04, 2026 @05:29AM (#49562360)
I don't even put it in a container. I just yolo it. It hasn't done anything bad so far. My logic is that if it nukes my filesystem then I deserve it.
Re:Paint.net 5.2 alpha now runs on Linux on Wednesday September 02, 2026 @03:19PM (#49541060)
Miguel de Icaza took that code and got it running on Mono back in the day, and a few months ago for kicks I compiled it and it still runs. Quite buggy though.
Re:Develop Cross-Platform CLI and GUI Tools with Tcl/Tk on Tuesday September 01, 2026 @03:29AM (#49519089)
The industry standard VFX compositing tool Nuke also uses Tcl for its expressions and save format, it's all Tcl terms as I recall. My brother did VFX for a while and I was amused when he was having some trouble with an expression and I was like "it's a Tcl system... I know this" and helped him.
Re:Transfer files over an Ethernet patch cable on Monday August 31, 2026 @03:28AM (#49506688)
I used to do this to play Minecraft with my cousin without a router.
Re:Don't use musl if you care about performance on Friday August 28, 2026 @04:25PM (#49483780)
I swear "bifrost" has to be the most overused name in computing, possibly only behind "yggdrasil." I'm not sure what's so magnetic about those names but I've seen at least 10 different things called that.
Re:U.S. State Department Pauses Immigrant Visa Applications on Thursday August 27, 2026 @03:55AM (#49461363)
I've been waiting over a year trying to get my wife into the country. Looks like I'll be waiting even longer now. The US immigration system is just so utterly cruel and broken.

If you actually look at Cobol job listings, they pay like 50k and want a master's degree. The myth of them being paid really well is not true at all.
Re:The Debt That Apple Owes to the CIA on Friday August 21, 2026 @05:11AM (#49385637)
Not sure why this is immediately flagged and buried, there's actual evidence for it. People need to stop being so uptight.
Re:Browser De-Slop on Thursday August 20, 2026 @10:21AM (#49374974)
It's really not that intellectually lazy. When you're stuck in the quagmire of daily driving (modern) Windows you almost don't even notice how bad it is, but after being away from it you can come to see how truly patronizing, obnoxious, and asinine the whole OS has become. You get to a point where you see people getting screwed by Windows and complaining about it, and you just think "you're doing this to yourself."
Re:Ask HN: Alternatives to GitHub on Tuesday August 18, 2026 @03:38AM (#49342624)
Mostly a toy, but I made https://dumbforge.dev which is intended for hosting public repos without setting up a daemon or forge at all.
Re:Why does Opus 5 feel worse to work with? on Friday August 14, 2026 @11:03AM (#49299683)
So true. The breaking point for me was when it was constantly saying to wrap up because we'd done enough work for the day, but we had barely even done anything. Or constantly estimating that the next steps would take X number of weeks, and then knock it out in a single prompt. I demanded in no uncertain terms to stop giving pointless bogus estimates or telling me to stop working, and it just wouldn't. I also had a project I wanted to let it cook on overnight (a codebase port from Java to C++) and laid out a set of hard and fast rules that it could absolutely not break at any cost. Then I woke up the next day and it had broken all the rules and was just taking shortcuts left and right, and then lying to my face about it, even when I could point to concrete examples.

I cancelled the sub instantly and went to Codex and it's never let me down.
