TikTok, a popular social media platform owned by a Chinese company, has faced concerns about its data collection practices and potential risks to user privacy. These concerns were the focus of a recent hearing that brought attention to TikTok's algorithms and content moderation practices, as well as their impact on mental and behavioral health, especially for young users. Despite the company's efforts to address these concerns, lawmakers are calling for stronger government oversight and regulation to protect American data privacy and user safety. Comprehensive privacy and data security laws are needed to give Americans control over their information and ensure that the diverse culture of the United States is reflected online. These laws should also protect vulnerable groups such as children to ensure their safety online. Overall, the hearing highlighted the need for greater transparency and oversight to protect user data privacy and security.

The Code Report discusses the latest coding tool, GitHub Copilot X, powered by GPT-4, an advanced coding assistant that will revolutionize the programming industry. This advanced tool is like anabolic steroids for coders, and developers using this tool will have a significant advantage. With this tool, developers can highlight blocks of code and ask the AI to refactor or generate unit tests. Moreover, it can generate documentation based on a specific library's documentation and integrate the docs for React, Azure, and MDN. Notably, with voice-activated Copilot, it becomes possible to control VS code and write code entirely from voice commands, replacing the need to be an extremely fast typist who can churn out 150 words per minute in Vim. Copilot for Pull Requests generates descriptions based on the changes made to the code, while the Copilot CLI generates commands along with an explanation. The tool is currently in technical preview and will make programming faster and more efficient when released publicly.

Dopamine Detox – How to Reset Your Brain for Success
Re:Dopamine Detox – How to Reset Your Brain for Success
on Thursday March 16, 2023 @08:33AM (#35181024)
A lack of focus is a common obstacle preventing people from achieving their goals. A dopamine detox can help cultivate focus by limiting distractions and adopting a disciplined way of life. The detox involves four pillars, starting with limiting mobile screen time to one hour a day. The second pillar involves a complete ban on YouTube, while the third pillar involves avoiding adult films and other 18+ material. The fourth and final pillar involves daily meditation for at least ten minutes. The detox is a short-term reset button that paves the way for better focus, greater productivity, and personal growth. It is important to note that bad habits can find their way back into our lives, so it is crucial to remain disciplined and adopt a structured routine that supports focus and personal growth. By creating these boundaries and limiting overuse of digital devices, people can take control of their habits and improve their mental well-being.
Is GPT-4 Going to Be Artificial General Intelligence? + GPT-4 Release Date

The release date of OpenAI's GPT-4 is expected to fall between December 2022 and February 2023, and the AI community is expectant that it will exceed even the significant rumors that have been circulating about its abilities. Despite its hype, very little is known about the AI's characteristics and skills. GPT-4 will likely have fewer parameters than GPT-3's 175 billion, with an anticipated parameter size somewhere between GPT-3 and Gopher 175b-280b, focusing on getting the most out of smaller models rather than developing models that are too oversized. Multimodal models that allow AI systems to navigate and comprehend environments more effectively are seen as the future of deep learning models. The social impact of GPT-4 is still unknown, but as it has the potential to surpass even GPT-3, it will be a significant development. Online learning platforms such as Skillshare can be a great resource for anyone interested in staying up to date with AI and other technological developments.

Microsoft's cloud solution architect, Claire Aphis, has discussed the importance of responsible AI implementation in businesses. Advancements in AI have brought benefits, but there are ethical dilemmas to its use. Nearly 90% of organizations have encountered ethical issues relating to AI. Microsoft has developed six principles when building AI systems that aim to put people first to counter these issues – fairness, reliability and safety, privacy and security, inclusiveness, transparency, and accountability. Microsoft has created the Office of Responsible AI and the AI Ethics and Effects and Engineering and Research (ETHER) Committee to embed these principles into action. Aphis recommends that businesses integrate responsible AI principles into the early stages of a project's development to avoid ethical issues later on. Microsoft provides two resources to companies for responsible AI implementation: the AI Business School and a range of AI resources. Microsoft's Partner Tech Talks series covers responsible AI and ML to provide tailored learning and guidance to accelerate business practices. The responsible AI and ML workshops aid Microsoft partners in developing awareness of responsible AI and governance models for their organization as they engage in AI projects with customers.

Re:Thomas Merton: The Writing Life and the Contemplative Life
on Sunday March 12, 2023 @01:31AM (#35117381)
Thomas Merton was an American Trappist monk, writer, and theologian who produced over 25 books on social criticism, poetry, and theological reflections. His work was deeply influenced by his desire for a contemplative and ascetic life, leading him to revise and expand his earlier works into a rich theology of contemplation. Merton believed that contemplation was not just for monks, but the end goal of all Christians. He was a prolific writer who saw writing as a complementary pursuit to contemplation, which helped him deepen his insight and share it with others. Merton's search for the contemplative inner life led him to explore Eastern mysticism and befriend many Eastern religious leaders, resulting in criticism from some in the Catholic Church. He turned everyday practices into spiritual exercises, inspiring readers to pursue a more contemplative life and reflect deeply on the world around them.

Janet Yellen, former chair of the Federal Reserve, expressed confidence in the banking regulators and praised the handling of bank failures. She noted that while each bank failure is different, she believes that the current regulatory tools available to institutions like the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) are light-years ahead of what was available in 2007 and 2008 during the financial crisis. Yellen's comments come amidst news that the FDIC has taken control of Silicon Valley Bank and will oversee its sale process. The bank was overseen by the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, with the San Francisco Fed acting as its number one federal regulator. Yellen acknowledged that while failures are a desirable thing, containment of the failure, loss management, and swift resolution are crucial. She also pointed out that the FDIC isn't the first party to have a claim on the bank's assets and that a federal home loan bank system has lent more money to Silicon Valley Bank than any other bank, making it the first party with a claim on the failed bank's assets.

Entrepreneur Bill Gates talks about his reading habits, emphasizing the importance of finishing books in this short video. Gates notes that he often takes notes while reading non-fiction books to make sure that he is absorbing the content, but admits that it can be frustrating to read books he disagrees with. He also discusses his reluctance to start reading certain books, such as the famously lengthy Infinite Jest, citing the challenge of getting his mind around what he's reading if he only has a few minutes at a time. Gates points out that magazine articles and short YouTube videos are better suited to his schedule, but makes a point to read for at least an hour each night to make progress on his current book.

CS183B is a Y Combinator course designed to teach individuals how to start successful startups. The course emphasizes four core areas - a great idea, a great product, a great team, and great execution. Altman, the teacher, believes that a great idea is vital and should be passion-driven, mission-oriented, and focused on small but rapidly growing markets. Building a great product is time-consuming but essential, meaning startups should concentrate on creating something a small number of users love, which generates passion and leads to organic growth. A great team, with shared values and vision, is critical to startup success. Equity allocation should also be fair and transparent to incentivize team members to work hard and stay committed. Finally, great execution is essential. Altman advises founders to be flexible, adaptable and to pivot when necessary, to focus on the critical path and track metrics to measure progress. Following these guidelines can help increase the chances of startup success and build businesses that last.
