Re:Anecdotally, Programmers Dislike "Reduce" on Wednesday September 16, 2026 @02:39PM (#49731160)
I wanted to add that from personal experience tastes can change! I didn't like reduce when I was first exposed to functional programming, but have come to prefer it.

Might be nonsensical, but one thing I sometimes wonder is why I reach for reducing a list to a value more often than I need to generate a list from a starting value. I guess the asymmetry has something to do with the kinds of applications I work on.

Somewhat related, but when I was sleep deprived and falling asleep during a general relativity lecture in college, I caught myself reasoning through the series of equations written by the professor on the board, and agreeing as to their validity with the explanation in my mind being that my parents are in a foreign country. My brain was convinced it had logically checked the progression and that it made sense, but it was based on this irrelevant fact. The experience always makes me wonder what falsehoods we individually or collectively use to convince ourselves of things being true.
I think this is really well said. Instagram is probably the closest for me though I use it far less.
Re:Pet projects are getting too big to pet on Friday July 03, 2026 @04:53PM (#48779828)
I can relate to this, and the point about costs resonated with me in particular. I wonder how this will evolve in the future and how soon.
Assuming the Newtonian framework F=dp/dt, p=mv, dW=Fdx, as well as constant mass, then Fdx=dpdx/dt=mvdv and integrating both sides gives deltaW=1/2mvf^2-1/2mvi^2+constant. So the amount of work to move the object from x1 to x2 is proportional to the difference of the square of the initial to final velocity squared up to a constant. This we define to be the change in kinetic energy.

But as others have mentioned this is only as intuitive as F=ma, or p=mv.

In my view, at least classically it's just a matter of definitions then. If our definitions of energy differ, the only thing we will experimentally agree on is the equation of motion, and even then up to a frame transformation.

One thing that’s been bothering me about AI side projects is inference costs. With traditional software, a successful launch usually means higher profits. But with AI products, success can mean unexpectedly large bills. This has pushed me toward cheaper, less capable models and made me hesitate to even explore certain ideas. I don’t want every side project to become another $20/month...

This looks promising. And it's exciting to think it could also target mobile [1].

I find this insightful. Would you recommend anything in particular to get there? Other than staying frugal and being competent at your job?
Not orthogonal to your point, but a distinctive feature of market-cap-weighted portfolios is that they are inherently self-rebalancing.
Yes I think colors would be great, while still keeping the UI minimal. Another comment brought it up along with audio feedback for strokes which feels like it would be a nice experience.
It is a glaring omission with no excuse. I should have mentioned it.
100% shoutout to perfect-freehand/Steve Ruiz!

this is amazing feedback, thank you for taking the time to write it all out. I love the idea of audio feedback!

Thanks! I just tried it out on Signal with a new note and it does work. The image is not as large as the WhatsApp preview though.

I accidentally linked to a specific note at the top which I guess Cloudflare is struggling to preview due to traffic.

thanks! Oops, I just realized the link at the top is to a specific note instead of fingernotes.com
I've used it successfully with Chrome and Safari on macOS but it was originally intended for touch.

Hi HN, I've lurked here for ages and decided to come out of the shadows for my latest side project which reached the point where it’s sort of fun to use and hopefully not totally embarrassing to share.Hacking fingernotes.com together over a couple of weeks was a creative outlet when work got stressful. I think of it as digital sticky notes. The goal was to make notes with a personal touch that...
