Great way of putting this. I certainly feel like this in smaller companies where each action (or inaction) has a direct consequence on the profitability.
The bigger question for me is how to use this efficiently as a team of engineers. Most workflow tools i've seen so far focus on making a single engineer get more out of a claude/codex subscription but not much how teams as a whole can become more productive.
Any ideas?
I think it’s a reference to Franz Kafka the author, not Kafka the Apache open-source project.
Have you written about your journey from homebrewer to pro somewhere?
Would love to read about it! Especially about the initial sizing of the equipment ..
What’s the cost of a kWh in Maine?
The newer houses here in Japan tend to be all-electric (water, stove, AC) and the current prices (~¥40/kWh) make a lot wish for kerosene heaters of the past decades.
Not trying to defend them but I often see these sentences when Japanese is translated too verbatim.
「申し訳ございませんが…出来ません。」is a very formal way of saying this. Context then of course tells the receiver if they really can’t or just don’t want to ..

Amazing. I am at the stage of thinking/dreaming about a weekend-bakery .. but I am completely lost when trying to work out the economics of this.
How did you tackle this at the beginning? What were your demand/cost projections when you started out?

Yeah, this is very much in line with [1] (see Access under $1billion section):
> Access. You now can just ask your staff to contact anyone and you will get a call back. [..] Within 60 minutes, we had a call back. I was in B1's home talking to him the next day.
Truly amazing how the top 0.0001% operates.

Entry-level to mid-level is about 15-35万円/month. I am really curious what sort of SMEs you are talking about. Mind giving some examples?
I think this is a case where the Free Monad could help a lot. I've only ever built toy-examples but I really liked the way it allows you to structure the program's plan separately from interpreting it.
A dry-run mode could be implemented as a side-effect free interpreter .. without ever having to touch the plan or the program's grammar.
Exactly what I came here to say.
The error messages produced by g++ for anything template related are a really difficult hurdle to overcome as a beginner. I am sure once you mastered it, it does make sense -- but right now it's a source of frustration for me.
The pessimist in me thinks that going mainstream means it will be less useful for screening applicants/keyword searching job postings. Sort of repeating what agile has brought us.
And where are the deadlines coming from?
The other side of the coin being we haven't developed access to it yet.
Either way, an interesting perspective, thanks!

I came across this video message [1] from a previous submarine captain which I think is relevant in the WFH context as well. He mentions having a routine, clean environment, enough downtime, de-escalate conflict early and communication as key ingredients to coping with self-isolation.
Start by figuring out a routine for you and try to stick to it.

Came here to say the same.
Especially now that the world is struggling with SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19, understanding these different models helps a lot!
Last but not least, Scott E. Page is a great educator. Glad to hear there is a book from him now -- his papers were a good read as well during/after the course.
Came here to mention the same coursera course. It’s a good start.
The changes during extraordinary times aren’t always permanent. Apparently female workforce participation during WWII was a record high but not in the decades that followed.
Absolutely agree. This point however is generally only understood by a previously engineer-turned-manager.
Exactly this. Best to cash out immediately. If you are serious about investing, then build a diversified portfolio. This might include your employer but certainly at a much lower asset allocation rate.
This is really great advice. I have always read about story telling being important for presentations etc. but somehow never thought about it in such a setting.
