Ask HN: Are open-weight LLMs the new offline encyclopedias?

There was a time when offline encyclopedias were used heavily as internet was not widely available. I used to install britannica encyclopedia and Microsoft Encarta on my PCs (I had no internet at home at that time) and it had helped me a lot between the years 1999 to 2006.Now we have open-weight LLMs. There are very good models of size < 15GB.So I’m wondering:- Are open-weight LLMs...

Ask HN: LLMs and Information Theory

In what ways do large language models reshape or expand our understanding of classical information theory, particularly around concepts like meaning, entropy, and communication?

Why is this on page2 of HN! This should be on the front page.
JAX GPU support is limited to Linux only. Even the WSL2 support is experimental. https://jax.readthedocs.io/en/latest/installation.html#suppo...
Seems like he was involved in relationships with many collogues. He disclosed a few but not all.

Could you please add a pause button for the animations on your home page? They jump unexpectedly when you are reading the code snippet.
You should checkout : https://www.mural.co/ In our organization it's used a lot (sometimes overused), and I find it very helpful.

0.3 MP camera in 2021! Why ?

At least put a decent camera. 8 MP one would've been great.

Re:IBM Lost the Cloud on Friday October 01, 2021 @02:17AM (#28715235)
If IBM could have taken Mainframe to the cloud, with option for CICS OLTP and COBOL/JCL Batch processes for smaller enterprises, it could have helped them a lot.

Any party caught willinging sabotaging such a prominent open source project would definitely face greater consequences than just a ban.

Can't handle multi-page documents properly. You have to enter the page number, after uploading the doc and you can only annotate that single page.

"a case of exploding mangoes" has been on my reading list for long. Would give it a read this weekend.

Ask HN: Can we create a new internet where search engines are irrelevant?

If we were to design a brand new internet for today's world, can we develop it such a way that:1- Finding information is trivial2- You don't need services indexing billions of pages to find any relevant documentIn our current internet, we need a big brother like Google or Bing to effectively find any relevant information in exchange for sharing with them our search history, browsing habits etc....

Re:Saving a Million People from a Cyclone on Sunday May 05, 2019 @02:15PM (#19834110)
I am a resident of Bhubaneswar, the capital city of Odisha, India . We are currently bearing the brunt of Cyclone Fani. The wind speed was phenomenal , comparable to the super cyclone of 1999.

Even after 48 hours the city is in dark.

But thanks to proactive steps of the govt agencies the casualty number is much less than that of '99s.

Yes. I could see the images on my mobile browser. The very aggressive corporate proxy was probably blocking the images on my work machine.

The article has no photograph of the "badgir" (wind catcher). I had to search and see a few photographs to appreciate the design.

My Fav is Neon :

There's no shame in it. Advertising pays the bills. Stop looking so red.

I am excited about both WebGL & Web assembly.

Although both of these have been around for a few years, we are yet to see a general adaptation of these. (might be due to inconsistent browser support).

Now with the rise of VR, 3d Printing, powerful GPUs these two technologies are bound to open new avenues of an immersive browsing experience. I imagine that in next few years we would have 1- Webs stores, that show a virtual 3d shopping mall, 2- 3-d virtual try out of garments, 3- VR coaching of physical activities like a- Playing Tennis, b- Judo, c-Taecondo, d- Dance

This is so creepy! I am sure there are plenty of such companies across globe scamming no so tech savvy tech people! There should be a global crack down against them. Also, big computer farms like Microsoft, Apple, HP, Dell, Acer should educate their customers about such scams.
