News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

To everbody complaining about the huge price of $149. For a font pricing thats pretty normal.

Maybe coders aren't the usual targeting group but print media is paying plenty of cash for typo licenses.

Sad to watch Apple enshitify themselves now. Nipping it in the bud and switching away from iOS to GrapheneOS right now.

Mozillas suicide. Sponsored by Google. Don't be evil.
Re:Inline Scope for CSS on Monday October 14, 2024 @05:13AM (#41835711)
This guy is absolutely right - the C in CSS stands for cascading.

What Tailwind is doing is rewriting the whole thing that CSS is and putting it into easy-to-write classes. This could be handy to you, yes, but unfortunately you're missing the whole point of CSS which is to have cascaded stylings.

To help you understand this a little bit better, one could have a look at why CSS was invented and where it comes from:

In the desktop publishing world (books, newspapers, etc.) this kind of cascading layout rules were used long before there was the first HTML page on the web. This should be nothing to be mixed up with regular programming. Change your view on that thing and you will understand.

It may sound harsh but Tailwind is a way to tell "I'm a programmer, I don't understand CSS and I'm not further interested into".

Unfortunately the whole world population is addicted to ~5 sites/apps on the web who will play the game.

If Debian patches this out, you won't be able to access those sites. That's a living edge case for them.

True. For the IPFS case they're not recording the IP addresses for possible blackmail. But that's just an idea.
Re:Apple, please don’t take all of the buttons away on Saturday February 18, 2023 @12:43PM (#34848999)
Aside from saving money, they're doing it also to generate sales.

In iPhone 15 the missing button will be the feature. Some years later, say in iPhone 18, the re-introduced button will be the feature.

All that happened before with Apple devices. They took away the form factor of the original iPhone SE without replacement just to bring it back with the iPhone 13 Mini. Also they took away the ports of MacBooks to end up with an USB-C port only - and now - the latest 14" MacBooks reintrudice a wide range of ports as a.. can you guess?

Re:Email Is Async on Monday August 15, 2022 @09:40AM (#32469522)
It's a question of the topic. Some topics need to be handled synchronously. And if you don't answer in a conversation this is legitimately perceived as "rude".
It seems to be a problem with the 2-3px between the columns. Should be easy to fix.
Re:Ask HN: Wife's Instagram account was deleted – what now? on Friday February 18, 2022 @01:03PM (#30388990)
Take it as a good opportunity to ditch Instagram and Meta forever! ;)
Everybody: Avoid Google Chrome for the sake of privacy.

Google is doing everything to track even if you opt-out. And they will continue to implement their workarounds.

Quick solution: Use Firefox.

Stop throwing data at Google. Google is evil (Google "don't be evil" for more info on that).

Eliminating competition...

80x24 is the default terminal height. I mostly use this size on all of my projects. It has many favors: compatibility everywhere, tiny bandwidth, etc.
Re:Ask HN: Which email software do you use on Linux? on Friday September 27, 2019 @07:34AM (#21090721)
I use Rainloop web-mail (https://www.rainloop.net/) on a remote machine.

Integrates seamlessly great into all of my environments.

Check out PragmataPro. Has everything a man needs.
I'm using Firefox with uBlock Origin (+ social network blocking lists), Decentraleyes and Firefox Multi Account Containers.

I put every "big data" collector (Google, FB, etc.) in a single container using FMAC.

(And to be honest: I tried uMatrix but it was too work intensive.)
