It's HBO. They are known for this. But they definitely went too far with Industry in my opinion.

The sex and drug scenes are much more toned down in the latter two seasons. Part of the reason why is the cast had more leverage and strong armed the writers / directors.

Great show but definitely would be better with 90% of the sex / drug scenes removed.

Re:OpenAI raises less than half of $30B target on Saturday October 31, 2026 @12:48AM (#50313291)
How does this affect OpenAI's prospects in the next few quarters?

Unlike Anthropic, OAI does not have an S-1 to pore over. Their finances are shrouded in rumor and speculation. I can't assess how much of a death knell a ~15B financing shortfall is.

Let me introduce you to the TV show Industry which takes you into the world of London high finance where tense phone calls, compliance violations and financial crimes are the order of the day [1]

The person interviewed in the BBC article is a football player and fits the bill of 'active' and 'gets outside', none of which addressed the underlying issue.

My read on this article, which is validated by all the comments in this thread, is that it's a PSA to public health officials to have better outreach for darker skinned individuals living in the UK who seem to be getting systematically misdiagnosed because of a lack of knowledge.

> there is minimal methodologically rigorous research showing health benefits from exogenous supplementation.

In this day and age, this shouldn't be an open question tbh. There is an extensive body of research, with dozens of meta-analysis / systematic reviews aiming to settle the score on this. If you let Claude or your favorite LLM du jour loose on Pubmed I'm sure it will surface some very reliable conclusions.

Star Trek TNG as a whole was a masterclass on how to effectively manage a high performance team. It's a favorite watch in tech leadership circles for this reason. Every now and then I re-watch this clip of Data taking over the enterprise and the inevitable hiccups he runs into [1].

Really high quality writing for its time.

With the current capabilities of LLMs I'd imagine removing the "it's not A, it is B" tell would be rather simple and involve a modification of the system prompt.

The fact that none of the frontier labs have done so is probably because it's another way to easily fingerprint their own slop. It's known that Anthropic already has a mechanism for ID'ing Claude output. As more and more of internet communication is mediated through agents, there is value in finding a way to prevent slop from being re-ingested during training and avoiding model collapse.

OpenRouter only having 1 person in the data team is completely nuts. A canary in the coal mine for whats to come in the whole data space :|

1 or 2 exceptional ICs, a clean semantic layer and agents is "all you need".

RIP to the sexiest job of the 21st century ...

Re:Today, we hacked what we'd set out to hack: the iPhone on Friday October 23, 2026 @12:42PM (#50211805)
There's every incentive for nation states and other espionage outfits to keep these types of exploits under wraps. This has probably been the new normal for some time ..

I for one have experienced multiple lifetimes worth of internet madness and will be looking to airgap / disconnect as many devices as I can get away with.

Re:It's still OK to enjoy programming on Monday October 19, 2026 @03:23PM (#50156803)
Engineers in the US are by and large writing a lot less manual code now than they were 6 months ago. There are engineers who are not writing any code at all by hand.

Is this a skill that makes up the bulk of the economic value of a SWE? That's up for debate. Either way, it is a skill that commanded premium salaries not that long ago and was a non-trivial cost for any forward thinking technology company.

That has all changed very abruptly. It is _cheap_ now to produce source code. The expectation is that this will reduce the labor cost and make companies more productive i.e. productivity = output (software) / input (labor cost).

There are whole classes of companies whose service was to provide tools for SWEs (i.e. devtools) that have no foundation to build on now. The entire SaaS ecosystem is predicated (in part) on the cost of standing up a fit-for-purpose web app to solve some internal business problem being too high to be worth it for most large enterprises. Hence why they are okay spending hundreds of thousands or millions per year in subscriptions to these companies. That's changed now with AI being able to spin up entire products soup to nuts at the cost of a few hundred dollars worth of tokens.

In summary, the changes in how we work within the past 6 months to a year have been nothing short of seismic. If you or your firm are not experimenting with AI tools then it's important that you pay attention now because the chance that your business will be gone or your job will be eliminated has increased 100x. Whether you like it or not the job description for being a software developer has changed.

It is a reflection of Bay Area tech culture, which dominates internet conversation and somewhat unfairly 'represents' US or global tech culture as a whole.

For companies in this bubble creative destruction is the order of the day and this manifests in me-too behavior from executives coupled with breathless enthusiasm for new technologies. It can often be excessive from the POV of an outsider looking in but not embracing the new thing fast enough could be the difference between filing Chapter 11 or having a trillion dollar market cap for these firms. All of this could occur within the span of 6 months.

Companies/Organizations outside this bubble don't face the same pressures (at least in a compressed timeframe) so they lag a little bit in responding to trends. But make no mistake the 'creative destruction' is occurring in full force and will wipe out any firm that's not ready for what's coming.

Well that locked-down appliance is way under-specced compared to an equivalent build at the same price.
Once I saw that Kobo was going all in on the color e-readers I decided I'm going to sit this whole trend out and bought another Aura One. Between it and the one I currently own they should carry me for a long, long time.

The Aura One is essentially perfect. The only gripes I have are the USB port and non-removable battery. It is a bit slow with the stock OS but with KOreader it runs amazingly well.

You are getting a lot of downvotes but I 100% agree with you. These are the types of conversations where someone's cultural background / bias is evident and its obvious to me most of your responders have never spent time outside the US.
Re:Nix wrote half of my debugger on Saturday October 10, 2026 @11:03PM (#50039448)
This sounds like a total nightmare. I am very interested in Nix and was strongly considering setting it up on my new travel laptop as a daily driver but stories like these give me pause. I would love to get a more detailed explanation of what happened here. Either way I am past the phase where I'm comfortable or patient enough to beta test software so Debian / Ubuntu it is for me.

Re:You Are No Longer Invited to Dinner on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @11:56AM (#49910638)
This is quite bleak but relatable. I used to strive to be a 'connector' type and the only thing that kept me going was my optimism and trying to give everyone the benefit of the doubt. That broke around COVID. The sad truth is there's a lot of shitty people :( A better long term strategy is to try to identify and avoid these people as their attitude will chip at you and bring you down.

Much easier to sustain a positive attitude and disposition when you surround yourself by people who are also investing in the friendship / relationship or who are likely to pay it forward with others.

This is essentially what held old world cultures together before the rise of capitalism and it's individualistic attitudes.

> - mixing circles -- people are often isolating their friend groups into niches (pickelball friends, church friends, D&D friends...)

I was raised in a social environment where mixing circles was normal and it took me a while to realize that that's not how Americans do things. It certainly creates a lot of difficulties connecting with others, and at least for myself I am a lot less motivated to get to know people better when I'm the X or Y buddy they reach out to when the people they actually want to hang out with are unavailable.

> let me know your thoughts

I upgraded to v0.9.71rc56 and have been kicking the tires on it. All the links work perfectly and the more compact UI is awesome.

Looks fantastic overall and I'm excited to see what comes next for Archivebox :)

Can't wait to try it out. I appreciate the quick fix on this!

Making the preview thumbnail hidable would be fantastic!

> - did you do the full filesystem migration yet with `archivebox update --migrate-only`?

Ok I was missing this step. I did a migration with the command you shared and I now see the icons.

But while I can see the icons, I can't access the relevant files, the links are broken. As an example, the singlepage icon leads me to a path that is correct except for the .html in the URI.

> - is it just the compactness of the old emoji icons on one line you preferred? or something more than that? the reason we changed it is because we have 20+ more icons now, so it no longer fits on one line easily and we cant easily represent every plugin with only common emoji

Yes, I still prefer the previous one-line rendering. It is more compact and less busy. For my own personal use-case, I don't care for majority of the archive options.

I understand that you had to switch to a different layout given you now have 20+ icons but if there's a way I can hack it to look like the old layout that would be great. Maybe a config setting that allows power users to specify what actually shows up.

> - what OS and screen size are you viewing on? and are you looking at the admin snapshot list or the public snapshot list?

Ubuntu 24 and 1080p screen

If there is no easy fix for the broken links let me know. I'm more than happy to continue this conversation on a github ticket.

Re:ArchiveBox v0.9 released with new native apps and 50 new plugins on Wednesday September 23, 2026 @12:38PM (#49818737)
I just upgraded from a relatively old version of archivebox (v0.7) and I am not a fan of the new UI. Is there a way I can switch back to the old layout. I found it a lot more intuitive and information dense.

EDIT: To be more specific with my feedback, in the new UI the 'FILES SAVED' column is not showing anything for all of the previous entries I'd made in v0.7. Can this be fixed? It's a huge setback and makes the v0.9 layout unusable.

Re:Ask HN: Ideas for getting more GitHub stars? on Tuesday September 22, 2026 @06:40PM (#49809274)
Github stars are a useless vanity metric. If you are still intent on chasing them then you might as well purchase them outright as that's what everyone does these days (see OpenClaw).

Question, where do you live? In America, and especially on the Pacific Coast 'Have a great day' is a phatic expression [1]. It is a common parting phrase and has lost any special significance that it might have once had within a conversation.

Amodei is just another SV grifter trying to use ethics / morals to hide his monopolistic tendencies. Instead of writing essays he should put his money where his mouth is and open source all the models Anthropic has, the harnesses and donate some much needed compute to science.
Re:Steam Frame starts at $1059 on Monday September 14, 2026 @02:22PM (#49701536)
Quest 3 is cheap for the same reason that 80 inch TVs are sold at or below cost. If you value your privacy at zero and want to strap a surveilling, billboard on your face for pennies on the dollar be my guest.

This is for people who want control over their devices. Despite the poor timing and somewhat high price tag I am glad there's competition in this space. Meta's stance on software and hardware openness is not great & it's suffocating the whole space.
