Assuming this child is 15 or older and not developmentally delayed, a parent should absolutely not be intervening for the difference between an A or an A-

This is how you get kids with parents who go to job interviews with them. I actually had to teach a kid I went to undergrad with how to grocery shop because "I never had to do it myself"

Kids need to learn how to be their own advocates.

You mean no one's lining up to get low pay and frequent parental abuse? You don't say.

>She told me of an email she received that said "X is trying to get into Princeton - an A- isn't going to get her in. What extra credit can she do to make this an A?".

Get off your kids ass, for starters, lady

For comparison, you can easily pay $500/oz on the east coast.
Re:Epic Games banked a $3B profit in 2018 on Thursday December 27, 2018 @06:17PM (#18773525)
I remember reading that the average player spends $80 on DLC for Fortnite — so there are a lot of people out there spending well over that to bring up the average from all those $0 players.

Fortnite makes over a million dollars a day... ON iOS ALONE.

They've built a money machine.

Unless Apple drags their feet with PWA implementation a native iOS app might not be needed?

It's easier to do with GA
Re:Facebook Alternatives on Friday December 21, 2018 @01:14PM (#18735230)
Facebook has sold all the private messages that you've shared with your wife.
Re:Facebook Alternatives on Friday December 21, 2018 @01:13PM (#18735217)
I guess you could start your own private subreddit and invite all your friends?

Though of course, I'd imagine all your friends would tell you to fuck right off.

Re:How a shampoo bottle is saving young lives on Friday December 21, 2018 @10:50AM (#18734025)
I'd say it's about the value of low-cost alternatives from an industry (medical devices) that very often disregards cost entirely.

I understand the precision and expertise that goes into medical devices, and they've saved millions of lives (mine included) — but in countries where $6,000 means something might as well not exist, they need something in-between precision manufacturing or nothing at all.

Feels real to me generally — actors are usually easy to spot, and these would be surprisingly good actors.

The police are not going to do anything in my experience.

I literally caught someone in the act of stealing a package and the police specifically told me to do nothing and file a report. I submitted clear video of a face and apparently this was a known thief to others in the neighborhood, so I even gave them the person's name. They're still stealing packages 6 months later. The police tell me there are warrants pending.

Re:How Scammers in China Manipulate Amazon [video] on Monday December 17, 2018 @05:10PM (#18702714)
Right, that has happened to me before. I've just returned the item in that case. It seems less likely to happen if the item is fulfilled by Amazon.

I'm at the point now where I've gone from trusting a review consensus to seeking an individual reviewer on a product that seems thorough and reliable.

My favorite example might be trying to find outdoor solar-powered lights. Mountains of garbage, with a lot of sellers just re-branding the same garbage. The silver-lining is that there are power-reviewers out there doing complete tear-downs and reviewing wiring/soldering quality. These people are the true heroes.

Less than the extent that Americans do? absolutely. In many ways they're obsessed with it. Look how much the gambling industry makes there.
Re:How Sketch Took on Adobe on Friday December 14, 2018 @07:03PM (#18686043)
The bulk of the design industry is in wealthy countries with an Apple presence.

But yes, there are professional designers who don't use Apple products. They're just not the majority in a global sense, but I'm sure they're the majority in some locales. Hell, there are still designers out there who don't even use a computer.

I'm not sure why this took such a pointed turn.

Re:How Sketch Took on Adobe on Friday December 14, 2018 @10:17AM (#18681347)
Most professional designers are still using Macs.
Re:How Sketch Took on Adobe on Friday December 14, 2018 @10:15AM (#18681331)
Omnigraffle is very bad for visual design
Re:How Sketch Took on Adobe on Friday December 14, 2018 @10:14AM (#18681316)
Honestly they should have abandoned it earlier. Instead of building monoliths of legacy features/code they need to build full-on replacements every 5-10 years. I can't believe they're still actively developing Dreamweaver to this day.

OF course, there's still not a replacement for Fireworks because they just rolled it into one of their other legacy products. XD is still not great.

uhh... duh

I'm amazed that they haven't had massive layoffs. They're both popular enough to the point where they could turn a profit with a significant shift in how they operate.

Re:Robinhood launches 3% checking account on Thursday December 13, 2018 @07:33PM (#18677424)
The American Dream is to accumulate wealth, and often involves looking for a way to get rich quick, some people think they can do it by day trading. There's a certain American stereotype of playing stocks to become wealthy.
Re:Robinhood launches 3% checking account on Thursday December 13, 2018 @04:18PM (#18676217)
The average person is more likely to lose money day trading than gain (especially considering the time sink). It's basically boring slow gambling wrapped in the guise of The American Dream.
who would prosecute them for it if it is national security related?
It's pretty common to distinguish your font from others with a description in the name, be it sans/serif/slab/mono/condensed/extended, etc — it does communicate "this is a font" clearly but it's also useful when you're in an application just looking at a text list of font names.
It's better for eye charts, not running copy on websites.
The biggest use would likely be to recreate eye charts
If it's a national security risk they might not have needed to be compelled to lie at all, but decided to do so themselves. This would be big enough to damage their entire supply chain if they did publicly verify it as truth.
Yeah that's fair, and an avenue they should take first.
Sure, but they let everyone read this specific story for free. They could have easily kept it behind their paywall.

Overall Bloomberg as a company does not sustain itself on news revenue.

If newspapers were in it for the money they wouldn't be newspapers. It's not an incredibly lucrative business.
