i started working on building a rust search engine on rocksdb in 2019 but got distracted by covid things and meanwhile saw the meilisearch and typesense projects release and take offthen last year i started working on building a free campaign finance web tool that i eventually wanted to be able to search 10+M docs, so i investigated current day usage-based search pricing on meilisearch and...
for me it got dramatically worse. it cant read whole files of concatenated code anymore. seems like its attention is much smaller. doing lots of piecemeal behind-the-scenes cmd line stuff now instead of just seeming to "understand" everything in one go. somewhat catastrophic for me. so bad that i was surprised to discover that chatgpt 5 is still worse

yes there is. that's an enormous added pricing and communication complexity for businesses. which we know has a high cost because of all the businesses who have decided it would be higher than just stomaching the credit card fees.
this would be great if everyone was rich enough to afford to pay for their services with money.
but it would cut off a lot of services and opportunities for everyone else who is able to pay with their attention (to ads) instead
>Can I take this a step further and say that advertising is the true problem here?
no? promoting stuff with a plausible chance of adding value to someone's life is not bad imho
the problem is the stuff that kills value, like smoking and gambling. not advertising in general. so yes advertising (the many) bad stuffs is bad if that's what you mean by "most things"
prodigal means wasteful. otherwise, beautiful.
probably unrelated but a nurse friend mentioned that a healthcare system got hacked last night (didn't have further details)
"...he invested in crypto ..."
buying crypto to try to profit is called speculation not investment
