Definition of public transport:

Cambridge Dictionary (UK): "A system of vehicles such as buses and trains that operate at regular times on fixed routes and are used by the public."

Collins Dictionary: "A system of buses, trains, etc., running on fixed routes, on which the public may travel."

Nice graphs, but these numbers are not reflecting the reality. As both count heat deaths differently. Europe does calculate it based on excess mortality studies and US only counts them if it is listed as contributing cause on the death certificate. With similar statistics, US numbers are several times higher. And as Europe has an older population, rates are likely higher, but the real difference is much smaller.

GrapheneOS is great. But that currently means you have to buy a phone from Google to work around Google looking down Android.

Same! The open source project I engage with, held the yearly conference always alternatingly in America and Europe over the past 10 years. And due to the current circumstances it was just recently decided to have next year's conference a 2nd time in a row in Europe.
Re:RP2350 A4, RP2354, and a New Hacking Challenge on Tuesday July 29, 2025 @11:55PM (#44730767)
Does anybody know if there exist RP2354 with a stepping earlier than a A4?
Yes, really looks like someone conducting a study, or someone who wants to call out projects for their sloppy PR reviews.
So he wants to tell us to stop paying for our streaming services and games? As we can acquire them via shady sources and claim that we wanted to train an AI model, but haven't had success yet.

Yeah, that policy wasn't enacted yesterday. It's already much futher along.
Re:Cryptographic Right Answers: Post Quantum Edition on Thursday August 15, 2024 @07:45AM (#41254900)
The field is too young that we can be absolutely sure. That's why most suggest to use hybrid cryptography for now.
No this not a really good criteria. There is Linux support for a few MCUs, including a few STM32 Series. Having a MMU is a much better criteria.
They already have an STM32C0 Series at the very other end of the performance spectrum starting @0,24$ per chip.
Re:Open source email pioneer Roundcube joins the Nextcloud family on Wednesday November 29, 2023 @07:04AM (#38458388)
Nextcloud Mail won't be replaced by Roundcube!

"Neither will Roundcube replace Nextcloud Mail or the other way around. ... Nextcloud Mail will evolve as it is, focused on being used naturally within Nextcloud."

In Firefox for Android 1.120 they seem to have made some improvements for the upcoming extended addon support and have added a link to find more addons via addons.mozilla.org/en-GB/android.

Let's hope lots of apps are available soon, including including Firefox Translations.

"In anticipation of opening up the Firefox for Android extension ecosystem later this year, dozens of new mobile extensions will surface during the 120 release cycle as we continue guardrail testing."

Re:Use YouTube to improve your English pronunciation on Monday October 30, 2023 @04:39PM (#38075466)
It even found one occurence for an Austrian slang pronounciation "Oachkatzl".

Though, in the video it is wrongly claimed that "Oachkatzlschwoaf" would mean squirrel, but in fact it means tail of a squirrel(Eichkätzchenschwanz).

Re:Recipes from Scratch on Sunday October 15, 2023 @10:33AM (#37890085)
It would be great to have an option to not only increase and decrease the time limit, but simply increase/decrease the complexity by one step.

Edit: OK, this seems to kinda work by clicking on the ingredient.

Germany is simply investing to little. Last year Switzerland invested more than 3 times the amount per person (413€) in rail infrastructure compared to Germany(124€). And the years before Germans spent even less. They increased the budget already by 40% from 2021 to 2022.
Germany deliberately starved public transport to death over last decades, instead spending money motor highways to pleasure lobbyists.
> Switzerland built a rail tunnel especially for trans-European traffic, but Germany is apparently incapable of getting cargo onto trains.

And the same is happening with the Brenner tunnel in Austria again. Italy and Austria are about to start constructing the last remaining sections, to be finished in around 2034. While Germany has not build anything, and is still discussing where they are going to build the tracks and expect the construction not to be finished before 2040, likely even later.

Edit: more detailed dates

Re:Source: Google Pixel 8 will get more Android OS updates on Tuesday August 29, 2023 @04:38AM (#37304894)
Unfortunately such a guarantee might me worth less than a vendor just keeping to push updates. I personally have been a bit disappointed how HMD Global(Nokia phones) handled their update promise.
They have already announced a newer series based on single/dual 1.5GHz Cortex-A35 cores (64-bit) + a 400MHz Cortex M33 core called STM32MP2 with mass production starting 2024Q2.

Re:How far can you go by train in 5h? on Friday July 29, 2022 @10:11AM (#32277143)
It also shows how much the train networks focus on domestic travel.

In nearly all bigger countries it is possible to reach most bigger cities within the 5h. But journeys in this time-frame seldomly go much beyond the border. There is still much optimization potential for transnational travel in Europe's train network.

I personally also use FairEmail, but I appreciate that there is an viable opensource alternative.
