Nintendo could lead such development and benefit both from royalties and free advertising of their products. Instead, they just want to kill the results of their fans (!) hard work. Can't say, how greedy and cowardly they look amidst this story.

If you don't sell your successful products legally in any way, there always would be one who can do it

Which proves ancient statement "Greed and cowardliness rule the world". I'm sure, there are people even in Western democracies, who perfectly aware where their outsource projects comes from. Not to say about China and Russia - they use slave labor of North Koreans for decades. Slaves from North Korea built stadiums for World Cup 2018 [0] in Russia. Everyone there knew about it (I'm Russian as well), there was plenty of evidence. Did anyone boycott the games?

I am Russian, and our regime perfectly match the list. Do not trust Goebbels-like RT propaganda.
Re:What would you do if you lost your Google account? on Tuesday May 05, 2020 @10:08AM (#23080137)
Answer is simple - do not trust all your digital life to Google. I would say, trust them as few as possible. Most of the content you created and saved under their account - your documents, spreadsheets, and photos can be accessed, modified and redistributed according to Terms Of Service.

Apply common sense and diversification. Use different services for your email, cloud storage, photos and videos. Have a backup of your every service - mirror of your cloud drive, reserve email, locally stored credentials in any offline password manager.

Re:Death of the Office on Friday May 01, 2020 @07:38PM (#23047625)
I was working from home for the last 5 years, and really miss office environment. I definitely would not come back to 9-to-5, but I desperately need one day for collaboration in person, I miss socialization and coffee breaks with colleagues, and my home turned into office long time ago, whereas it should be my "fortress" of relaxation and quality time with the family. I seriously considered moving all operations to coworking, but COVID-19 stopped me for a while
Should YouTube ban the interview with the President of the United States, where he suggests injecting desinfectant or hand sanitizer to treat COVID-19?

https://youtu.be/QtgVxGkrX1Y

A lot of things have been said, how communication is easier in person. I would simply add I miss socialization, chatting to colleagues during coffee break, extremely productive brainstorming during lunch and so on
Re:SmileBASIC 4 for Nintendo Switch on Saturday April 25, 2020 @05:56AM (#22976999)
That's not the first solution, when gaming console gave access to hardware through simple programming language for the purpose of entertainment and education. There was Sega Saturn Game Basic [0], published in 1998 and giving access to almost all console hardware capabilities.

However, 2020 is not 1998, and I personally consider Basic a bit outdated even for education purposes. Don't get me wrong, it's a great tool to introduce world of programming to kids, but Python would have been much more practical and extremely simple to learn.

Russia also advocating anti-vaccination movement [0] for quite a long time already, basically any conspiracy freaks, who can make US existence as a state more complicated.

I'm Russian national myself is any. I do not support our regime of course, and left Russia a while ago. But US being so defenseless in the face of that threat surprising me.

Re:The SF Anti-Mask League of 1919 on Monday April 20, 2020 @02:51AM (#22921736)
We have huge fines here in South-East Asia, if you leave home without a mask. Even if probability of decrease transmitting 10%, on 1 million cases it's 100 thousand people.
However, probably their candidates have to show some projects with electronics and FPGA. Again, Intel has lots of "pure software" development, for example their own compiler, profiler, debugger and rest of similar tools, bundled into IDE.
It's Korean (probably also Japanese) thing. My friend attended their interview, said there were little to no technical questions, but he has been asked to create "self-presentation". He was hired. Samsung produces tons of software quite far from near-hardware level, for example Java and C++ applications for their own version of Android.
Re:We've Built Cities We Can't Afford on Saturday April 18, 2020 @01:26PM (#22909303)
I don't know, why no one mentioned remote work as a solution, at least for businesses who can afford it. I clearly know from my friends in HR industry, positions which never assumed remote options, now opened and filled without significant problems for business and new employee. Businesses are working in (almost) normal mode, apocalypse is postponed. So why pour money in expensive offices, require from you employees to rent apartments near your work, which cost like lux-class, or repeatedly spend hours of their lifes that accumulate in months in public transport or traffic jams?

When business people talk about remote job in the team, it's usually outsourcing to India. Why not to let your employees present at the office, say, 1 time a week, to deal with the customer or attend weekly meeting for those who miss socialization.

I saw Apple II, however I also don't understand from the article, what's the author work with? No even brief project description, no code, no usage context... Maybe the article is just a beginning of some bigger story. Everything is too unclear. Would be nice to hear comments from the author.
Re:Folly – Faceboook’s open source C++ library on Thursday April 16, 2020 @08:53PM (#22895181)
Folly has Boost as a dependency and do not repeat features that already present in there. Not a problem if your project already uses Boost. Abseil seems to be self-sufficient.
Comrade Xi: so many exciting things to borrow from North Korea or Russia!
I think, sinse he's working on internet search and knows targer architecture in advance, he meant x86_64 assembly, used probably for platform-specific fine-tuning
As noticed above, creators admitted that creating OS written in Assembly was a challenge for them. However, I totally agree about optimizing capabilities of modern compilers. Interesting fact on the topic, my friend, Principal Developer of well-known tech giant has a practice of picking up candidates, who mentioned "fluent Assembly" skill in their CV, and challenge them by suggesting to create a small, highly optimized application. After that he compiles the same application in C++ with maximum optimization, and in 90% of cases generated code is more optimal, that written manually. However, before becoming all sceptical about obsolete skills of learning Assembly, I would point out on the rest 10% of his candidates.

I would not have attended one even if I got paid for it. Why should I flush my career in toilet, sentencing myself to dig into piles of 50 y.o. crappy code. Stop riding dead horse.
Re:ReactOS 0.4.13 on Saturday April 11, 2020 @07:19AM (#22841083)
Maybe it never meant to be used? Its development started soon after Windows 95 release, as we all see in 20+ years of progress not even close to beta

It should have been done years ago. Otherwise one day you may wake up and realize all your critical supplie chains (including not only iPhone, but also medicine and medical equipment) could be broken by communist totalitarian state, so you grip your teeth and love Communist Party and Comrade Xi, so as average Chinese citizen.

Re:Ask HN: What are you learning? on Sunday April 05, 2020 @10:24PM (#22790415)
Currently I'm learning video editing on Davinci Resolve.

https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve/

I collect examples of advanced C++. Noticed the lack of educational content at this subject, and planning a short course, something like "Exceptional C++" style, but on video.

In our distributed team we have a practice to make video presentations for colleagues, so I have experience of delivering visual content to tech audience. However, I see that particular course like a high-quality content, with diagrams, animations etc.

That's how I found Davinci Resolve, and you know, it's fun to learn it (even it crashes more than production-ready application supposed to). The only thing that buzz me, is not to forget about the initial goal:)

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Z/OS Wikipedia: "However, z/OS also supports 64-bit Java, C, C++..." Managers: "Why do we need budget spendings for that Java, everything works fine..."

4 chan exist like 20 years or something. Does anyone ever thought about a legal way to shut it down and lock up couple of admins? I'm sure their stupid troll raids cost billions since it started.
