Re:Ask HN: What are you working on? (March 2025) on Monday March 31, 2025 @02:04AM (#43531630)
I love playing solitaire card games. But got sick of all privacy intrusive, subscription, ad-riddled crap out there. So I combined learning macOS/iOS development with doing my own games the way I want them (currently Klondike and Spider); https://menubar.games (originally I intended them to only be accessible through the menubar, but got carried away when I realized how easy it was to make iOS versions).

Will continue to refine and possibly do more - love iterating and polishing as a way to learn.

Should it not be ”Live free and die” then?
Re:Kagi Sidekick (alpha) on Wednesday February 21, 2024 @02:05AM (#39450933)
Funny. Kagi was the payment solution I used to sell shareware in the late 90'ies. I believe the company later disappeared due a fraud case that made it bankrupt.

Seems like both domain and company name is recycled into this now.

Re:How to Be More Agentic on Saturday January 13, 2024 @10:40AM (#38980913)
It is a numbers game. And by increasing the number of chances to "play", you increase the probability of scoring (i.e. "increase your luck surface area").

> How do you know if by increasing your good luck in one area you’re not increasing your bad luck in another?

I think you do know. Eat healthy and move => most likely will increase the probability of be able to be more active at an older age. Build and launch projects => increase the probability of building a profitable business (but if doing that makes you burnout - sure, you could say you increased your "bad luck" from a health perspective)

Why, oh why, is in-car infotainment so bad? And I don't mean bad as in subjective opinions about user interface. I mean the fact that my 2 year old high-end Audi A6 still show Yelp ratings in the navigation system in Europe - Yelp pretty much shutdown in Europe 2016!

It feels like there is somewhere an hierarchical organization somewhere completely lacking product management and a connection to what is expected in the digital world.

It is the consequences of a power outage in Flexential PDX02 data center.
Re:Why old books smell so good on Saturday August 19, 2023 @09:54AM (#37188819)
Indeed so. Once in my youth I brought my Amiga 500 to a friend's place, and he had a cat that peed on the edge of it.

The computer was ok, but it was basically a flood of cat pee seeping in into the memory expansion slot underneath.

Tried everything to get rid of the smell. Including perfume. Didn't make it better. Especially when it got hot.

Still today, when I smell cat urine I instantly think of Motorola 68000 assembly.

I really like reading books, non-fiction, fiction, business, everything. But I always tended to have good reading momentum and then life/work happened that derailed the reading habit - and I forgot about it. Took months to pick up again...

To keep reading top of mind I built a Chrome "newtab" extension to show my "Currently Reading" list, and excites me about books I've put as "to-read". It has worked wonders on my reading! And it is pretty small and polished - no tracking, no credentials, just bare-bones.

Except you had to register in an app every place you went to, during covid. Nice social profiling that data could provide… say, if another type of party ended up as the ruling one.
Re:We need better support for SSH host certificates on Monday March 27, 2023 @05:10AM (#35324513)
I wonder how many thousands (millions?) of man-hours of lost productivity over the world the Github SSH debacle resulted in. Not only for teams to fix the issue in a build pipeline no one touched for several years, but also the lost productivity for teams build/deploy pipelines to break, etc.
The problem is not crypto. The problem is (the lack of) diversification of his investments. Putting your life-savings in a single stock is equally bad. Putting your life-savings in tech stocks is almost as bad. Diversifying it over multiple industries, exposure to different markets, and other assets than just stock - now we are talking.

It is not the same kind potential lottery win as stock picking the winner, but you also will not bit hit as hard.

This is the lesson that must be learned, not only with investing in crypto, but investing in anything.

Pick any of the big four; PwC, EY, Deloitte, KPMG.

Typically they'll do a valuation and put a bonus threshold. x% under, x+n% if over.

> Is your leader the ultimate authority of your group?

Yes. Selected by, and sole connection to the mythical group "board".

> Does your leader have impressive, made-up names or titles?

Yes. "Chief Executive Officer".

> As far as your group is concerned, would they say that there is no legitimate reason to leave them?

Yes... if ever trying to leave, you are technically bribed with something that you cannot use in stores or pay rent. They call it "equity".

> Is your group suspicious about the outside world?

Yes. Always this talk about how the outside world is "the competition". Sometimes "the users.

> Does your group believe that they are the ‘right’ religion/church/group/ones, or only ones, who have ‘right’ teaching/doctrine?

Yes. "The competition" is wrong.

> Are there any of the above such rules/laws in your group?

Yes. Rules are in "the handbook".

Around February there's a whole week where schools are closed with the incentive to do sports - especially winter sports (given the time of the year). A lot of people go to ski resorts - the alps (or up north in Sweden - which got mountains but is far from the Alps).
Same with Swedish city Västerås with original name West Aros. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V%C3%A4ster%C3%A5s
Re:How to use an API without programming on Wednesday July 17, 2019 @02:03PM (#20462306)
Here’s the non-Medium-paywall’ed “friends link” of the article: https://medium.com/@stpe/how-to-use-an-api-without-programmi...
I was very much like that. Then by coincidence, I got into RC-car racing. Not only is it fun, a community, and a way to see yourself improve - it is my first non-programming-hobby-activity since being a teenager, and most importantly a money sinkhole - I love it!
When reaching my destination, the Uber-driver said: "Give me 5 stars and I'll give you 5 stars". I questioned that practice and said I will give my rating in due time. The driver got upset and started to rant about how I never would be able to request an Uber again because he would give me a 1-star rating if I didn't rated him 5 at once...
Re:Ask HN: What are some niche communities you enjoy? on Sunday August 05, 2018 @04:03PM (#17693207)
RC racing.

Early this year I joined the local RC racing club and bought I used 1/10th scale 2WD buggy kit. I found it amazingly entertaining, almost zen-like, to do racing. It is like a video game, but in real life. And to learn skills, see how you improve, learn more about the setup and technical parts. All in a great, helpful community with a mix of people from all backgrounds. You've got that awesomely fast 12 year old kicking the ass of a 35 year old CEO at the track...

This is from a respected manufacturer and they've got 2-cell 7.4V LiPo batteries with a 120C discharge rate. There must surely be a way to verify this claim? https://teamorion.com/en/news-and-racing/team-orion-ultimate...
Re:Ask HN: Do you write code on the train? What's your setup? on Tuesday November 14, 2017 @02:34AM (#15693385)
I love coding on a train (long-distance, rather than short commute). The whole concept of being productive WHILE also being transported is somehow very energizing.

I use an MBP 15", typically using train-wifi or tethering to my phone (4G subscription with unlimited data (and no throttling) for $35/month (299 SEK)). However, I try to optimize to not depend too much on wifi, just in case.

Overall I've tried to optimize my workflow to just use my MBP 15" instead of being dependent on an external monitor, external keyboard, etc. Does really help when traveling and avoiding office to be productive.

Re:Show HN: Readwise – Review and retain your Kindle highlights on Wednesday September 27, 2017 @01:35AM (#15345160)
Thanks for doing this - this seems like a very good addition to improve the retention of the information intake for books. At least for me - I've noticed that resurfacing what matters to me within a quite short timeframe after reading it, definitely improves how easy (or hard) I find to apply the key takeaways of a book after I've read it.

Tried to sign-up using Amazon, but got an HTTP 500 in the auth callback: /accounts/amazon/login/callback/

Re:Quitting Caffeine on Tuesday August 15, 2017 @05:42AM (#15016730)
I'm very much the same. And I do envy people who gets into some kind of hyper productive mode after a coffee, or like my partner who can't sleep at night if she gets a cup after 2pm.

I can have a large cup of coffee at 10pm, become tired and be sleeping at 11pm. Also, during extended vacations (>2 weeks) I typically go without coffee and, what I can tell, don't feel the difference.

I wonder why this is case...?
