One thing that I find annoying is that it gives results like a teleprinter and so overall takes longer

When I was a kid we threw out our old B&W tv. I wanted to smash the CRT but had heard that they could explode so from a distance I fired several .22 bullets at the screen. They had no effect. IIRC the screen wasn't damaged at all? I can hardly believe what I'm writing but it was true
Yes, with the 'can' in canola being the first 3 letters of Canada. They though up the name as they reckoned the name rapeseed was problematic from a marketing point of view. I've heard that like all oils that require extensive processing canola/rapeseed oil is not good for you as it contains the wrong sort of fatty acids as a result of that processing. Olive oil, lard, butter, coconut and ghee are all far healthier.
Where I live it goes crazy with road works when it's coming to the end of the year with the council trying to spend the unused budget rather than lose it.

My sister is far far richer and more successful than I am. She once told me that every night the last thing she'd do was to make a mental list of things to do tomorrow. That was it. Nothing written down.

Is there any way to get rid of the banner that moves with you as you scroll down the page?
I've read books on it. The 2 million Arabs are the descendants of the 20% of Palestinians who were internally rather than externally displaced, ie the ethnic cleansing was only 80% effective.
The antisemite slur now, is it? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plan_Dalet
Aah, the Palestinians never existed argument, the successor to the long discredited land without people for a people with land one and just as derisory. The actual tragedy here is that Western Powers facilitated settler colonisation to create a Jewish State which by definition required the expulsion of the people already living there. Further, the Zionists never had any intention of sticking to the share of Palestine "gifted" to them by the the UN. They had prepared detailed plans for the ethnic cleansing of all of Palestine. The only reason they didn't take the West Bank in 1948 was that there, they were up against the British-trained Arab Legion.
Iran isn't Arab and anyway what gives America the right to decide who rules where?
Re:Remembering the Crystal Radio on Monday November 20, 2023 @04:12AM (#38345198)
I'm utterly useless but had a crystal set as a kid that worked, main thing was having a decent aerial. I got such a kick out of it even though I could only get one station.
Re:The Best Timed Shot in TV History (Probably) on Tuesday November 14, 2023 @05:22AM (#38261454)
I used to love watching James Burke's Connections on tv as a kid. So much so that when years later I saw his book, Connections in a second hand bookshop I bought it and it sits in arm's length from where I am sitting now, unread. Just checked now and it's copyrighted 1978, this edition published 1979.
Re:Throw away your first draft of your code on Friday August 04, 2023 @04:20PM (#37005340)
Not on this scale but it has happened to me on a few occasions that I've lost several hours work for some reason (including no autosaves).

After the initial despair I know from experience I need to quickly try and recreate what I've lost while it's fresh in my mind.

It takes much much less time and I always feel that I've done a cleaner job second time around.

At times like that has occurred that this is the way to do it but I've never been able to bring myself to adopt this as policy.

Arrrr me hearty!

Football was everywhere (e.g. calcio in Italy) The English codified rules for it but that doesn't mean Aussie rules or Gaelic Football are derivitives of the English game.

I'd like to know what happened to Squash. Up until the mid 90s or so it was really popular. Then it seemed like everyone stopped playing and courts closed left right and centre

Lots of windows in those pictures, which one was it?
Sometime in the 90s, probably, an unflattering portrait of the late Brendan Behan was unveiled in Dublin and was soon christened The unbearable likeness of Behan.
Re:Buy Well. Buy Once on Saturday June 10, 2023 @01:49AM (#36267974)
Sometimes buying well means buying cheap. I buy cheap DIY tools. They're good enough for me as a hobbyist. But if I were a professional they be a bad buy. For one, with constant use, they'd wear out too quickly. Secondly while I can do accurate cuts on my £100 tablesaw, for example, each cut requires more setting up time, than on a quality saw with an accurate fence.

I just bought it. It better be good or I will find you.
Re:TwinBASIC is a modern BASIC compiler on Wednesday May 10, 2023 @05:47PM (#35893960)
The whole point of TwinBasic is that it's to be 100% compatible with VB6 and with VBA.

From that standpoint there's no point comparing it with BBC Basic, Powerbasic, Freebasic, vb.net, purebasic, Xojo or gambas because none of those are in that space.

I'd like to hear more about who twinbasic expects to appeal to and why those people would want it?

Re:TwinBASIC is a modern BASIC compiler on Wednesday May 10, 2023 @05:34PM (#35893842)
Are you worried about Microsoft's bottom line?

Re:A TLS 1.3 Stack Written in Visual Basic 6 on Wednesday May 10, 2023 @03:08PM (#35891995)
Would not the UBound and LBound functions not solved those issues?
Hopefully it makes a real difference to compensate us for the never-ending, dark pattern cookie notices we have to endure as a result. Who wants a choice of 'Accept all' or 'Manage your settings' on every second webpage they land on?
