>Mathematicians can have as much fun as they want while working on math problems, they have the skills and the brains, why shouldn't they enjoy their work?

Obviously. In my ideal world even the janitors at the same institutions would have a blast, it's just not usually the end-goal reason humans are hired.

>With math you never know up front what 'real improvements in engineering and other life improving fields' will require some key bit of it that someone interested in pure math came up with a decade or two (or 10) before we found an application.

Right, but would it have made a difference for the application layer if that key bit of "pure math" had been discovered by a human (that had a great time) or a machine? That's my point about games being a bad analogy.

Re:Mathematics has changed. Let's act like it on Sunday November 01, 2026 @02:11PM (#50328675)
I keep seeing people point to AI solved games as evidence that AI advancements are less impactful than we might think. Usually it's chess ("today there are more players than ever!"). Most of the time these are bad analogies. Games are played for entertainment, so productivity is meaningless.

I never advanced in math past high school, but my assumption would be that we as a society aren't paying mathematicians to have fun[0]. The discoveries mathematicians make must translate into real improvements in engineering and other life improving fields. So why would we pay mathematicians to work on math much the same way, if a new machine-led way makes these discoveries faster and cheaper?

[0] Being a little facetious. I know I don't know what I don't know.

Plenty of humans haven’t been to Paris.

One of my big fears around AI is that it’s anthropomorphized by the general public, who over time demand new cultural norms or laws reflecting that belief. I can’t believe the frontier itself is now pushing that view.
Re:Decisions API is in public beta on Tuesday October 06, 2026 @07:55PM (#49985910)
One difference between Decisions and Jev (for now) seems to be that Decisions can take image inputs, which is a pretty common need.
Re:SvelteKit 3 Is Here on Thursday October 01, 2026 @08:59PM (#49928771)
I love the hands-on developer experience of programming in Svelte. But since we're in October of 2026 I have to ask, is the vibe-coding experience in Svelte any different than in React? Can anyone with experience in both comment?

User: "In other words you did not sign off on the chad IDE?"

Gary: "Sorry, YC is a pretty big place and I can't be all places at all times"

User: "I'm confused. why did you fund it then?"

Gary: "We're a partnership of 15 general partners"

Seemed to me like he was apoligizing for admitting them. However I see now he also added "I wouldn't count them out, one questionable video does not mean someone is bad". Maybe I misread it.

Re:Ask HN: Is it racist to say 'Chinese models' on Thursday November 13, 2025 @04:59PM (#45921177)
Chinese isn't just an ethnicity, it's a country.
That's incredibly damning. The throttling of Substack writers is so cruel, especially considering how much these writers have contributed to Twitter.
Since this got so much attention, I feel the need to add that the CEO of Substack is now saying that even accounting for fake views, their traffic from X has gone up substantially.

Tweet with graph: https://x.com/cjgbest/status/1985852384531394916

>Using up newspapers free stories a month on articles users never see etc

Webviews are pretty quarantined from the main safari app. I don't think cookies persist, so I don't think this would be an issue.

>Nobody wants a damn web view.

OP here. This might be a classic Hacker News sentiment that's not shared by normal users. Being able to instantly return to where you were without having to navigate apps is probably appreciated by a lot of people. (As would be preloading in this instance).

FWIW when I first started browsing HN a common complaint was websites being mobile sized. The sentiment here was they should be rendered in full desktop and require pinch-zooming and scrolling in all directions.

Not sure how much of an attack that is. FWIW the preloading is nice as a user.

Tell HN: X is opening any tweet link in a webview whether you press it or not

Just saw the CEO of Substack celebrating traffic from X/Twitter shooting up thinking they stopped suppressing tweets with links[0]. Actually, this traffic is because now any time you open a tweet with a link, the in-app webview loads in the background, and displays when you press the link.I run an ecom store that gets a lot of its customers from Twitter. I was also shocked to see my traffic...

Re:YouTube Just Ate TV. It's Only Getting Started on Tuesday October 28, 2025 @08:27PM (#45741136)
I've seen this repeated all over the internet, but it's far from true. CPM/RPM on adult video is way, way, WAY lower than YouTube or other SFW ad networks.
They're basically suggesting logging into a product with an OpenAI account and paying OpenAI directly for the product's AI usage. Presumably the product would get some cut of OpenAI's revenue.

Like AI is the gas that powers the AI product. OpenAI sells the gas, the product gets commission.

That was my understanding at least, since I've had the same thought.

Ask HN: Am I making something people want? (OpenRouter with prompt A/B testing)

I've realized I spend a lot of time hardcoding LLM prompt tweaks and trying to determine their effectiveness from a bit of personal testing. I spend a lot of time fiddling and making not informed decisions.I've been working on an API that runs one of X number of prompts, and can be sent back a good or bad score based on some user interaction. I can see which prompt wins and make them the...
