Thanks, this will pair wonderfully with my Capcat.org project.
Yes, I created this targeting my personal archiving needs, Developers, Design Engineers, ML engineers.

Markdown output has frontmatter for categorising data. HTML for browser consumption is optional.

The goal was to have a simple TUI for quick fetching, but the CLI can be scripted and extendable. All of this with focus on ethical scraping.

Commands are created following the standard from clig.dev.

Thanks for your response.

Capcat is a python based CLI/TUI FOSS utility for Ethical archiving of given website or RSS source.

The github repo: https://github.com/stayukasabov/capcat

It is generated with NLP, context-engineering, spec-driven development and LLMs.

Fully functional at http://capcat.org, with instructions for usage and documentation.

The project started from my personal needs of simple archiving with structure and moved to product design/MVP exercise.

I am longtime HN user, and the most value I got in years of reading is always deep in the comments section.

For HN Capcat uses the official API, with rate-limits, identifies honesty with clear user agent and skips paywalled content. All usernames are anonymized with a link to the user profile.

The content is delivered in Markdown format (Obsidian ready with frontmatter) and optional HTML with dark/light themes. Every source has its own YAML config file for separate control and PDF size limiter. In the folder users have an option to change the HTML theme with a minimal CSS design-system.

Please consider that my focus as a product designer is in UX. I have enough of a general culture and software development principles but the code is not validated, and my decisions in building may have a limitation.

Feedback is welcomed. Thanks in advance.

Made this for myself first. I read a lot, save things in multiple places, then can't find them later, or the page is just gone. So I wanted one quick archive (in any folder of my choosing): plain Markdown on disk, with images and attachments, organized by date and source. Two ways to use it: a CLI for scripting and cron, and a TUI for when I don't feel like typing. Same backend, identical...

Re:The UX Research Reckoning is Here on Tuesday May 30, 2023 @06:30AM (#36123227)
I sold my first UCD solution in 2005. The client was a financial service provider. The research that I used (thanks to the principles of NN Group) was minimal and focused mainly on building prototypes and extensive testing with target audience.

I am glad that people who are not designers finally will meet reality. If you are a designer, the idea that you focus only on visual design is plainly wrong. But if you have no visual culture, no UI design knowledge and skills, no idea about the underlying technology, and thrive in statistics, double diamonds, design sprints you can call yourself what you want, but you are not a designer.

Designers create solutions for the business and the users. The keyword is CREATE.:)

Let me tell you something. I am a product designer. I know we are doomed to be obsolete. Not only that, but I will use ChatGPT to develop my prototypes and small scripts.

And finally, will find a time to build some ideas with Dart/Flutter. Something inside is telling me that in a generated future, people who can code will be able to create free from no code tools and SaaS silos. And this is enough motivation for me:)

I see a strange future in which product designers (who will spend less time on decorating and fiddling with DS components) with the help of ChatGPT will fulfill the role of junior devs in the production pipeline.

>Visual centering should be implemented in CSS with a neural net. Let's get standards with the beat.

Actually, I am utterly baffled that this is not the target of current neural net implementation. I expected some form of automation to emerge in this field first.

Instead, someone decided, that investing in generative "A.I." art and removing the human element from the illustration process is more important.:)

Re:Visual design rules you can safely follow every time on Monday February 06, 2023 @07:44PM (#34686880)
The craftsmanship requires dedication, critical thinking and hard work.

In the world of lean development and design sprints, the quality of UI is not the important part.

Maybe in the near future, only the best designer will survive the shift.

Re:Visual design rules you can safely follow every time on Monday February 06, 2023 @07:28PM (#34686700)
If you're not well-versed in visual design, it's okay to stick to some basic guidelines.

But remember, every rule is just a starting point. If you have a solid understanding of contrast, color, composition, usability, accessibility, and more, you have the freedom to experiment and try new things.

In my professional opinion, standardization and commoditization in design have their pros when it comes to production and usability. However, this approach is leading us towards a bland and uninteresting user experience.

I'm hoping that the emergence of XR will bring back some of the old-school "skeuomorphic" spirit of exploration, expression, and texture in design. If we keep relying solely on "best practices," we risk being replaced by automation.

And please, don't design UI without having a design background. Use some UI library or Tailwind/Bootstrap instead.:)

Dear Obsidian team.

Thank you from my heart. As a designer, I have visual thinking, which requires clear representation of relationships between information objects.

No more fiddling with mind-map apps which cannot offer this level of integration with my vault.

Now I finally have focused workflow.

Thank you again.

Re:Is Dark Mode Good for Your Eyes? (2020) on Sunday December 11, 2022 @06:23PM (#33948761)
Every classically trained artist and designer knows the principles of contrast.

Dark-colored text over a light background will result in a higher contrast ratio than the opposite combination.

Design decisions must be objective and based on data.

As an option, the user must have the choice to apply different modes and themes based on A11 for low vision.

For example, the principle of higher contrast (dark-colored text on light background) will be literally painful for people with photophobia.

Re:Writing down what I do – in Obsidian on Wednesday November 09, 2022 @05:23AM (#33529512)
For years, I have tried all available software for mind mapping and documenting. All expensive macOS apps have disappointed me. In my frustration, I even tried Emacs for a while, It was wonderful but clearly not in my ballpark.

The habit of using Markdown since early 2013 as a form of software independent documentation finally paid off when I found Obsidian.

Nowadays, I do everything in it. My Vault is a giant repository of videos, PDF's and linked notes with tags which will live independently of obscure software logic and database mishap.

Aside from using Excalidraw, my workflow is simple: I use Obsidian as a library and edit my documents with Mac Vim (cannot find a reliable way to map JJ to <Esc>). Sync the Vault with Synology drive. Focus on the actual work.

I am in a somewhat similar situation. After closing my web company recently (2019), I have focused purely on DS and the hand-off process.

In my case, I have an interest in front-end development (React), refreshed my JS knowledge (https://eloquentjavascript.net/), and moving forward with this course (https://designcode.io/react).

Frustration can come from different angles, company, team, or personal.

Working long years as a PM and business owner, I found that sometimes the changes are inevitable. Some vacation and personal time can help for future adjustment. Good luck to your friend.

Re:I have 218 browser tabs open on Tuesday August 02, 2022 @10:06AM (#32318616)
Maybe I have not explained it clearly, sorry.

I usually generate my passwords with pwgen (you can install on Mac with brew and use this command pwgen -s 20 -1 -v -y -c -0) then store in plain text within an encrypted folder on my NAS.

In some cases, I use 2FA. In some, a lengthy "mumbo-jumbo" passwords that are easy to remember. :)

P.S. This is just an old habit and I have nothing against using a password manager like https://keepassxc.org/

Re:I have 218 browser tabs open on Monday August 01, 2022 @11:43PM (#32314873)
My passwords live in an encrypted folder with contextual information, then are used in the browser with per site rules. Bookmarks are collected in Markdown with tags/notes (Obsidian), or clipped with a bookmarklet.

I use this script: https://bit.ly/3vyA9on. Big thanks to the Author.

Usually at the end of the day, I refine all collected information with tags or specific folders/links.

If you want to export your clipped content, there is a plugin called Obsidian Enhancing Export (requires Pandoc) https://bit.ly/3cZFmzl

P.S. This approach has saved my skin many times. I can sync to my Obsidian folder, which I sync with Synology NAS.

Re:I have 218 browser tabs open on Monday August 01, 2022 @07:21PM (#32313385)
I will never have more than 5-8 myself. For me, focus is the key of accomplishing a given task. If I have to do a research, I collect by clipping in Obsidian, then tag and reorganize. If a given project needs a series of webpages on startup, I create a new profile in chrome (with different colour) and move along.

Searching trough open tabs is way more inefficient than searching trough topics/folders and tags in Obsidian. Working against complexity is a habit, I guess. It comes with realization that time is precious:)

Re:Ask HN: How did you increase your UX skills? on Wednesday July 20, 2022 @06:27PM (#32173227)
A little aside. In early 2000, the problem was how to introduce and educate businesses about UCD and UX design processes. Nowadays, in my personal view, we have to balance all the UX/UI trends/principles/research with business goals more. Starting with well-defined set of product requirements and KPIs and "keeping it in focus" is essential.
Re:Ask HN: How did you increase your UX skills? on Wednesday July 20, 2022 @02:46PM (#32170383)
Start with the fundamentals. I have published on my blog introduction series of articles for beginners (don't subscribe, it is not necessary).

https://stayux.substack.com/s/ux-design

UX is a deep topic. But from software-developer perspective you must cover the basics (if you choose so).

My book recommendation list: Laws of UX: Using Psychology to Design Better Products & Services

https://www.amazon.com/Laws-UX-Psychology-Products-Services/...

Think First: My No-Nonsense Approach to Creating Successful Products, Memorable User Experiences + Very Happy Customers

https://www.amazon.com/Think-First-No-Nonsense-Successful-Ex...

About Face: The Essentials of Interaction Design

https://www.amazon.com/About-Face-Essentials-Interaction-Des...

I hope this helps, good luck:)

I am a designer that got fed up with "mouse" control everywhere.

One day I asked myself: Is there a way to scroll in the browser without using a mouse or arrow keys?. Enter Vimium.:)

I have tried in the past Emacs, but I have an operating system, and I don't need a new one (for now). So now you can take MacVim only from my cold hands. P.S. > You can paste the buffer in insert mode with ctrl+r+0.

My theory on this "problem" is that we are already data and echo chamber-driven society. If people "en masse" decide that they have had enough, uniformity and sameness will go away:)

Is this a new Firefox service? Hey, I can create a real corporate identity for you. After a serious research and thousands of variants. It is cheap: only 200k USD.:)

Now, a question: Why established IT companies rarely understand the importance of the words "Identity" and "Brand Differentiation"?

Re:Ask HN: How to take first steps to escape burnout? on Monday January 03, 2022 @03:48AM (#29778672)
I agree. That's why, I suggested a therapist as a first step. Without more context every advice is wrong. But as a general rule of thumb, identifying, reducing or eliminating the pain points works. I know this from my limited experience with two burnouts so far.
Re:Ask HN: How to take first steps to escape burnout? on Monday January 03, 2022 @01:54AM (#29778095)
I am no expert by any means, but just skimming to your problem description I see two "pain points": 1. Your job - no fulfillment - just money. 2. Your spouse - no trust - lack of compassion.

For the looks of it you are stuck in two places of frustration. Find adequate therapy, speak with people who you trust and have respect for. If after this solution is not present - exclude the two points of frustration from your life and restart, rebuild and enjoy life. Wish you luck.
