Cool! This is great because it demonstrates how terrible NYTimes UI is on mobile, thanks!
Was it don’t be evil, or something else?

It depends on the knowledge domain. I would argue that much of human knowledge is individual to the person acquired by interacting with their environment
Re:Vi Hart's Big Navier-Stokes Post on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @02:49AM (#50067733)
That’s the thing. AI won’t be limited to being trained on only human input, why would it? Humans are trained by interacting with their environment plus a genetic world-mapping initial seed. There is no reason AI will not be the same, just at a much more extreme level
Re:Vi Hart's Big Navier-Stokes Post on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @02:39AM (#50067657)
That is very much the case at the current iteration of AI, but that should change with the introduction of world-mapping, computer vision, and world interacting AI. If machines are built out so that they are constructing accurate world-maps of how the physical world works and how to operate in it, then AI will begin to be able to out-invent human tool concepts and push past the horizon of what humans have so far been able to dream

The essential principle of free market economics is that good things may be done for selfish reasons and that this in itself is actually good

Nice I was just thinking about this the other day! Given the memory supply issue today, I wonder how much of data in our data centers worldwide is essentially just copied data? I have a feeling that there is a ton of redundancy, much of it absolutely necessary, but much of it essentially not at all, and howmuc memory we can reclaim by culling copies

Yes, the founders of the United States' were completely brilliant and lucid thinkers. The Federalist Papers are astounding. Maybe even more amazingly - they were written for popular consumption!

"To the People of the State of New York:

AFTER an unequivocal experience of the inefficiency of the subsisting federal government, you are called upon to deliberate on a new Constitution for the United States of America. The subject speaks its own importance; comprehending in its consequences nothing less than the existence of the UNION, the safety and welfare of the parts of which it is composed, the fate of an empire in many respects the most interesting in the world. It has been frequently remarked that it seems to have been reserved to the people of this country, by their conduct and example, to decide the important question, whether societies of men are really capable or not of establishing good government from reflection and choice, or whether they are forever destined to depend for their political constitutions on accident and force. If there be any truth in the remark, the crisis at which we are arrived may with propriety be regarded as the era in which that decision is to be made; and a wrong election of the part we shall act may, in this view, deserve to be considered as the general misfortune of mankind."

And one of my favorite lines of Hamilton, on the dangers of skepticism and irresolution: "Imagination may range at pleasure till it gets bewildered amidst the labyrinths of an enchanted castle, and knows not which way to turn to escape the apparitions itself has raised."

I hate to say it, but the reactions in this discussion indicate to me a lack of imagination and literary thinking ability in the Hacker News audience. That is my overall impression anyway, I don't understand the hate!

Working on https://croncoco.io/, an api first scheduling and orchestration platform. This is my first attempt at a paid microservice build, and yes I will admit it is similar some other services that are already out there, but, I still had a ton of fun building everything that goes along with designing and building a small microservice!

There’s no one single thing of course, but there are themes

A couple generally unifying themes:

1. People that for the most part want to be left alone and not messed with 2. People that don’t want to be talked down to

good news!

Iran Death Toll Estimates

Does someone have a good model for estimating these kinds of figures given widely divergent reports in press sources and otherwise? How might we approach such a problem with a greater degree of statistical/mathematical rigor? What information DO we have at our disposal that we might devise a model approach?
