If I had paid for a reservation for this car in checks notes 2017(!!!), I'd have some issues with them as well. Very cool tech demo, but come find me when it's getting produced and sold to the people who reserved them a decade ago.
Re:Things to know if you get cancer in 2026 on Thursday October 15, 2026 @11:57AM (#50105559)
Haven't had cancer, but for another surgery I had, the drive down from SF to Stanford Sports Medicine was EXTREMELY worth it.
That's the opposite of how green cards work.
Re:Sonos CEO Patrick Spence steps down after app update debacle on Wednesday January 15, 2025 @12:42PM (#42714277)
Wtf, their pricing model is almost as bad as the planned obsolescence. $15 a month just to connect your hardware? Ridiculous.
Re:Gavin Newsom vetoes SB 1047 on Monday September 30, 2024 @07:50PM (#41703311)
Same. I am generally very politically aligned with him (esp housing and transit), but this one ain’t it.

If you think the administrative flip flop is bad now, wait until Trump implements schedule F.
Re:Silicon Valley's best kept secret: Founder liquidity on Wednesday June 12, 2024 @06:32PM (#40663919)
The options were likely 10k when he was issued them at hiring. When leaving the company, he would need to purchase those options (likely within 90 days if it's a shitty policy). Then, the real kicker is that he would have to pay taxes on the on-paper gains between the 10k and the current valuation. So lets say the company was worth half of what it was at IPO, he would now own 2.5m of stock, owe taxes on 2.49m of income, and have to pay that off with early engineer salary and no liquidity on his equity.
Re:Silicon Valley's best kept secret: Founder liquidity on Wednesday June 12, 2024 @04:58PM (#40663034)
An early stage startup is a bad place to avoid working insane hours.
Nobody is saying they should be high on the job. People are saying we shouldn't fire employees for having a beer or a joint a week ago on vacation.

The status quo endorses the former and demonizes the latter.

In sprawling cities like Houston you can also just not see that area of town. In a dense place like SF, it's harder to avoid.
Certain areas are inherently easier to be homeless in, regardless of local programs.

Try sleeping outside for a year in Phoenix or in Minneapolis. Try getting resources in a sprawling suburb without access to a car. It seems clear that SF, with its dense, walkable layout, access to public transit, and year round moderate climate, would be vastly preferable to most areas of the US.

Love how HN loves data driven analysis, except when analyzing SF violent crime rates.
Re:CA Cities to Lose All Zoning Powers in 2 Days on Tuesday January 31, 2023 @04:06PM (#34602117)
It's worth noting the overlap of the people mocking San Francisco for having a homelessness crisis and those decrying upzoning for density and providing affordable housing.
What? Why?
Crows, mice, and dolphins perhaps.

Awaiting a "GitLab advisor here" comment from him...
Re:Ask HN: How do I get started with Algo trading? on Monday March 21, 2016 @07:55PM (#11333273)
If you're in the NYC or bay area, there are a few quant groups on meetup.com that have regular events. Might be a good place to drop in.

That high school kid needs to install a web server. Is he going to hire someone? No. He's going to copy a curl command.

I agree that the government shouldn't have pervasive access to the records, but I WANT Uber to track my rides. That's how I can have recourse if a driver takes me for a spin. I WANT my driver to be identified and for them to track who picks me up. He claims that it's troublesome for a female passenger to be identifiable to a driver. How about if you're a female (or male) driver driving in your spare time? Would she not feel safer picking up someone who is at least somewhat identified versus a shady looking stranger?

One of the crucial components of sharing apps is the building of trust and accountability. Identification is part of that.

This list of complaints doesn't hold water for me.

Re:The Last Survivors of Meridian 59 on Thursday September 18, 2014 @09:03PM (#8338519)
They do. Pre-patch UO was much more of a free for all. Then the 2nd Age created a mirrored server that prohibited all but mutual combat. It took a lot of the excitement out of it for me. The risk/reward of going to dungeons and territorial feuds were what drew me to the game.
Re:Is It O.K. To Kill Cyclists? on Wednesday September 10, 2014 @06:15PM (#8299532)
Also, since then, the cop who killed the former Napster COO was let off without charges: http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-milton-charges-d...

He was typing an email at the time of the accident.

Re:Uber Isn’t Worth $17 Billion on Wednesday June 18, 2014 @02:54PM (#7911935)
I made a similar argument in a prior comment. Particularly once driverless vehicles take off, the economics of vehicle ownership shift massively. Uber will be able to maximize utilization of vehicles and deliver them quickly due to coverage. The idea that network affect doesn't matter here is incredibly short sighted IMO.
Re:Why Uber Might Well Be Worth $18 Billion on Tuesday June 10, 2014 @11:41AM (#7873173)
My uber bill for 2014 is almost $2000 so far, and it's only June. I know that SF is not the rest of the country, but it has absolutely changed the way I get around.

That said, think about the possibilities that could come if one of their major backers (Google) continues to push forward with self driving vehicles. They will have excellent real time traffic data reported back through each vehicle on Waze, and a super efficient dispatch system. They could run 24/7 with electric driverless vehicles with crazy low operating costs. It could turn the entire industry on its head.

The economics would shift so drastically it wouldn't just be Uber vs taxies, it would be Uber vs does it make sense at all to even own your own vehicle. The automated vehicles could have utilization figures that are unheard of today. Why would you buy your own vehicle when you could have an automated Uber pick you up in 3 minutes for dirt cheap?

I think that time will come, probably sooner than we realize. And when it does, Uber will be positioned as the default dispatch gateway.

Re:Leaving Google on Thursday February 20, 2014 @02:10PM (#7272883)
While there are plenty of perfectly valid reasons to not want to move to the bay area, I'm not sure that I would list exceptionally pervasive racism among them.

Re:N.S.A. Foils Much Internet Encryption on Thursday September 05, 2013 @05:28PM (#6337164)
You must have been living under a rock for the past few months. Welcome to September, where we now know that to not be the case.
Not all spending is equal. If they want to pour money into projects, there is plenty of infrastructure that needs to be built here.
There's been a lot of tech worker backlash in SF lately. Not to speak for Tom, but I've certainly been made uncomfortable after mentioning it to someone who then proceeded to bash "all these Google types" who are forcing out the "true San Franciscans" and "ruining the culture of the city".
