It seems the author is assuming we normally trust legitimate ad networks with this data, but in this case a scary third party is getting the data.
Re:There are no adults in the room on Friday September 06, 2019 @12:18PM (#20896974)
It’s a funny title for this idea. When starting your career, I think it’s much more productive to think “ok I’m an adult now” rather than “there are no adults in the room”. Maybe we’re saying the same thing, but it’s a mental shift.

Re:Letter from Tim Cook to Apple Investors on Thursday January 03, 2019 @06:20AM (#18814346)
You sure you can fit all that in an iPhone 4 case? And if so, in 2019, can you make a significantly better phone in an iPhone 6 case than an iPhone 6?
Re:Letter from Tim Cook to Apple Investors on Thursday January 03, 2019 @12:34AM (#18813070)
The best phone you can fit in an iPhone 4-sized package isn’t signicantly better than an iPhone 4.
Re:Letter from Tim Cook to Apple Investors on Thursday January 03, 2019 @12:32AM (#18813058)
iPhone upgrades are slow because Moore’s Law is dead and, guess what... the new iPhones don’t offer significantly better performance per physical size.

(And note that Moore’s Law being dead just means density doesn’t double on schedule. I am not suggestion there is zero progress in semiconductor technology.)

Paperless Parts | Full-Stack/Front-End | Boston, MA | Full-time | Onsite

https://www.paperlessparts.com/

We're a well-funded startup developing software that makes it much easier for US manufacturers to quote and deliver prototype parts for product developers.

Looking for a full stack developer with a bit more of a front-end/UX focus. Our stack is React, Django, sklearn, and a very interesting solution for analyzing 3D part geometry. Ideal candidate is looking to grow with the company into a leadership position.

Re:Ask HN: What is the must have feature of your IDE on Friday January 10, 2014 @07:44AM (#7036319)
I like Ninja IDE for Python. Don't have a nice looking one for Java. NetBeans is a bit less visually offensive than Eclipse.
Re:Ask HN: What is the must have feature of your IDE on Wednesday January 08, 2014 @09:53AM (#7023777)
This might sound stupid, but I like IDEs that look good. Honestly, they all have pretty much the same feature set. I like to use applications that are pleasing to stare at for hours on end (and don't require much customization to get there).
Re:Graphene transistor clocked at 427 GHz [pdf] on Wednesday August 21, 2013 @01:54PM (#6252130)
The speed of light isn't directly why commercially available CPUs stopped getting faster (in terms of clock speed). That's more related to the fact that the increased transistor density and thinner gates (with more leakage) have pushed power dissipation to its limits. If we clock any faster, the CPU will burn up. That's why you can overclock if you use liquid cooling, for example.

That said, I'm sure there are fundamental limits to transistor clock speeds imposed by the speed of light. It's just not why CPUs stopped scaling around 2-4 GHz.

Re:C++ Library for Linear Algebra on Supercomputers on Friday July 26, 2013 @09:54PM (#6111552)
Interesting, a direct sparse solver (for structured sparse matrices?). The name "clique" implies graph theory, so I was expecting to see distributed iterative SVD. I've yet to see a good distributed SVD for huge real-world/power-law graphs.
Re:C++ Library for Linear Algebra on Supercomputers on Friday July 26, 2013 @09:35PM (#6111494)
Nice work, this is important stuff. Next step... sparse linear algebra!
Re:The Ph.D Bust: America's Awful Market for Young Scientists on Wednesday February 20, 2013 @10:12PM (#5255135)
I can only speak to electrical engineering and computer science since that's my field. I've been in the working world for 7 years, and here's what I've found...

First of all, I don't know any good engineers who are unemployed, regardless of their level of EE/CS degree. If you have an EE/CS degree, and you're having trouble securing a paycheck, this might not be the field for you. Sorry.

That said, if "getting a job" is your goal, a BS is all you need. A 5-year BS/MS program is a great deal if your school offers it. Otherwise, I'd look for a job with tuition benefits. I was able to get a Master's part-time at night, and it was completely paid for by my first employer. In my experience, an MS is definitely worth getting, as it will give you a slight salary increase, possibly a better job title, and is probably just expected at good companies.

A PhD in engineering is for teaching or being a research engineer (i.e. at a government/corporate lab or a university). I honestly believe you should only get an engineering PhD if you think (1) you're really smart, and (2) you can study at a top-tier university. If you're not an elite engineer, I don't see the point of a PhD. Work experience will look better on a resume than a thesis with an advisor no one's heard of. And a research job won't pay more, but it will require a bigger brain.
