Re:Why building profitable trading bot is hard? on Sunday May 22, 2022 @03:52PM (#31472046)
What books and advice would you give someone with zero knowledge that would make them a good investor such that they would be highly competent in managing a portfolio?
Re:Crazy New Ideas on Thursday May 06, 2021 @09:26AM (#27062862)
The idea of using reasonable domain experts as a filter to implausible-sounding ideas seems obvious for hard-technology and scientific problems. But what about entrepreneurial ideas that provide a social service, such as Uber or Airbnb? Were the founders "domain experts"?
Re:Facebook Reports First Quarter 2021 Results [pdf] on Thursday May 06, 2021 @09:15AM (#27062727)
Thanks for laying out the logic so coherently.

The comments by Martin Shkreli I was referring to are actually in the video that you linked. The subtlety in Shkreli's comment is that he was referring to amassing "fortunes". That is where he states that amassing fortunes most likely requires using "other people's money". Which makes sense.

He cites Joe Lewis as an example of a solo investor going from "zero to hero", but I would not say he was strictly an "investor" as he was a currency trader. Also, he had initial wealth from a luxury goods business.

Just for curiosities sake, do you know of any examples of retail investors amassing sizable amount of money starting from very little?

Thanks for the detailed insight. Looks like a great wealth of information.

Thanks for the link. If I remember, there was one Shkreli video where he mentions if you are not working at a hedge fund using large sums of other people's money, then the amount of profit one would make actively investing their own money is not worth the amount of research it takes to make informative investments. Not sure if that is exactly what he said, so don't quote me on it.

What's your take on retail investors and active investing, assuming that the retail investor does not have access to large sums of money.

Thanks for the course link. Does the course assume any prerequisites?

How does one learn to analyze these quarterly results and other financial reports (e.g., 10-K)? What books/videos/courses would take an absolute beginner towards becoming an expert? Would proper analysis of these results/other financial reports enable one to decide which company is a worthwhile investment? It seems like learning accounting would be a good start.
Always been fascinated by the precision and logic of legal writing. Could you go into more detail on how you would take notes and process the information and encode it into long-term memory? And how someone can improve their reading comprehension and recall of dense texts.
Re:Ask HN: Software developers, what is your side income? on Thursday April 01, 2021 @01:31PM (#26663613)
Interested to know more about your MMA betting. I'm big on MMA too. If you are willing to share, what is your net profit from MMA betting?

Note to OP: I do not recommend gambling or betting to make your side income.

Re:Cathie Wood’s ARK Has a New Price Target for Tesla: $3k on Saturday March 20, 2021 @02:36PM (#26525034)
This is contingent on Tesla achieving fully autonomous driving. Any industry experts willing to share their opinion on the feasibility of this in the next 5-10 years?

Quick tangential question: Do you see a benefit in incoming medical students knowing programming? If so, which specialty do you see it benefiting from the most (e.g., radiology)?
Interesting is that in the Phaedrus?
Sure, conversation is subject to rhetoric, but what I am saying is that you are able (insofar as you are capable) of trying to unravel the rhetoric, as the conversation involves you and another person. Thus, you have more power in conversation. Whereas, documentaries is more passive. But if you are referring to conversations that you are viewing as a passive observer, then I totally agree with you.
Conversations are different from documentaries in that they require two or more people, whereas documentaries is someone talking at you.

As for media, there are different mediums of media that allow for more trickery. For example, if a documentary says so-and-so did X, it would take some while after viewing the documentary to check if so-and-so really did X. You are putting faith with the people creating the documentary to tell you the truth. Whereas, good non-fiction books lay claims with sources to back the claims, so you can immediately go to the source to see if the claim is really true.

Also, video can be a very emotionally salient medium, thus may impede your more rational modes of thinking.

Note: I am not against documentaries, nor is this a take on the Khashoggi documentary.

Ask HN: How to not waste time throughout the day?

There are those equipped with the ability to not waste time. By wasting time I mean using their time to either gain more knowledge and to better themselves. For example, I would like to study subjects x, y, and z throughout the day. But my inability to focus on the task prevents me from advancing in subject x, let alone y and z.What are techniques you use to not waste time? I have tried the...

Ask HN: What are some interesting projects for beginner coders?

Currently learning Python (very, very novice). A frequent answer to the above question is to automate something. But what if you do not have anything that needs automating? Another reply is to solve a problem that you need solving, but what if there are no problems that you are aware of?ProjectEuler problems are fun, but they only go so far. I would like to think about more practical projects...

Re:Ask HN: Do You Trade Options? on Monday November 09, 2020 @01:32PM (#25037955)
Just wondering, why do you think the previous approach was more successful, as opposed to using mathematics and probabilities?
Hello Jose, I wish you success in such an important endeavor.

I have a question, but it is more of an advice one, rather than specifics about your company. I am going to soon embark in a Masters program for medical research, then medical school after. What advice do you have for a novice that is interested in the idea of starting a biotech company in the future? What are the things I can do now that can set me up for the future with regards to starting a biotech company?

Re:Matt Levine makes sense of Wall Street like none other on Friday October 09, 2020 @01:47PM (#24732447)
Is it worthwhile to read Matt Levine's newsletter, even if someone doesn't even have a rudimentary grasp on finance/economics? I've tried reading excerpts but they just went over my head. Would it be more useful to get a basic understanding of finance before reading his newsletter? There is so much terminology that is foreign to me.
Re:Introduction to Computational Thinking on Monday September 07, 2020 @12:56PM (#24400722)
For a beginner, would taking this course and CS50 concurrently be a good idea? Or would learning multiple different programming languages simultaneously be an unnecessary burden for a beginner?
