Seems like you need your accountant since you can’t count to three
Re:Show HN: I built a(nother) house optimized for LAN parties on Saturday November 16, 2024 @03:13PM (#42158909)
This is super freaking cool. I'm curious how you feel about Austin vs Bay Area in terms of general quality of life, culture, things like that?
Re:China sanctions US drone maker Skydio on Thursday October 31, 2024 @03:08PM (#42010314)
Would you have argued that the American civil war was recent in 1940?
Re:How paid Wikipedia editors squeeze you dry on Friday February 02, 2024 @10:40PM (#39237342)
Maybe all of these victims can get their wish of Wikipedia notoriety on a page called “List of victims of Wikipedia article scams”
Self-defense is violent, yes
You can drive to 8 national parks and monuments in half a day from SF.
Re:How the Syrian Electronic Army Hacked The Onion on Wednesday May 08, 2013 @05:45PM (#5677160)
Accurate. On one hand, we didn't want to fuel the fire, but on the other, that inflammatory article forced the attacker to reveal their hand. So it was actually to our benefit, strangely enough.
Re:Very Short Reply Expected on Sunday April 21, 2013 @10:45PM (#5587473)
I think two key parts of what you said are "most people" and "normal people". This normativity is taken for granted here. Preference for terse messages is ultimately a matter of taste and I've yet to see evidence that one belongs to a clear majority.
Re:Bitcoin falls from $266 on Wednesday April 10, 2013 @03:35PM (#5527523)
"current" is more precise than "actual"
Re:How My Co-founder's Dog Boosted My Productivity on Monday April 08, 2013 @12:15AM (#5509949)
I like to think of dog training as programming an emotional computer. There are lots of similarities (breaking up problems into smal steps for one) and the payoff feels just as great.
Re:Soros: General Theory of Reflexivity (2009) on Friday February 08, 2013 @01:13PM (#5189243)
Unfortunately it seems the lectures have been taken down.
So upvote every submission except for the one you don't like.
Is it ok to respond with "then why haven't you done it already?"
Re:What Americans Keep Ignoring About Finland's School Success on Tuesday January 03, 2012 @01:34AM (#3418862)
Though it's a good point I don't think it's valid counter-argument to the moral imperative "we should provide good education to our nation's children." Globalism may be around the corner, but until then, "our" nation's society is the one "we" are responsible for.
Re:Stop Telling Women To Do Startups on Sunday December 11, 2011 @11:24AM (#3340304)
Your anecdote against hers. Thrilling.
Re:Anti-pattern theater: how to get women to quit on Monday December 05, 2011 @01:16AM (#3313413)
Engineerist.
Gamestop may have Streisand effected themselves. I hadn't heard of OnLive before today but will probably try it out tonight.
Re:Google to Settle with U.S. Government for $500 Million on Wednesday August 24, 2011 @02:15PM (#2921879)
So it's like enforcing speed limit laws- the government can't possibly ticket every person who drives over the speed limit, so they ticket some percentage of speeders and from that expect that less people will speed.
Re:Who Rules America: An Investment Manager's View on the Top 1% on Wednesday August 03, 2011 @10:57PM (#2844300)
I already knew the about the vast disparity in the top 1% of earners, but I did not know how difficult it is to retire comfortably. A 30-year retirement is quite a luxury.
Re:The Crime of Lead Exposure on Wednesday June 01, 2011 @06:03PM (#2609585)
What is the modern lead? BPA?
I think the way people are responding isn't helping this question. This could have been good if responders had elaborated on what was promised vs what was delivered, but instead they just list the technology and write, essentially, "this was overhyped".
Re:Goodbye Facebook on Wednesday January 19, 2011 @09:38AM (#2119814)
Pot kettle black.
Re:Goodbye Facebook on Wednesday January 19, 2011 @09:37AM (#2119807)
Let's not get caught in a false dichotomy. Not having a Facebook does not necessarily make you anti-social. But if we take "anti-social" to be a measure of one's social availability, not having Facebook decreases that measure. Communicating only by smoke signal or carrier pigeon would make you extremely unavailable whereas communicating by email and telephone would make you very available. In some demographics, users check their Facebook 3+ times per day, so depending on your social circle, being on Facebook makes you highly available.

For the record, I do not use Facebook, but I accept that it makes me less available. Friends who make Facebook events to organize events can invite nearly everyone they want to invite to their event on Facebook, but have to go out of their way to invite me via different means. This makes me anti-social to some (pretty small) degree.

Re:Goodbye Facebook on Wednesday January 19, 2011 @08:48AM (#2119695)
The difference is that sudont explained why one would conflate the two while the child only said "Do not do it" with no explanation.
Re:Goodbye Facebook on Tuesday January 18, 2011 @11:57AM (#2116450)
Don't make assertions without support.
Re:From cosmism to deism: AI makes deities plausible on Tuesday January 18, 2011 @10:41AM (#2116111)
The best kind of quote- entertaining and instructive.
