The average age in the US is 26. Maybe your perspective is limited?

My understanding of the pro life view is that if someone chooses to put sperm in there, they are agreeing to give up some bodily autonomy and carry the child to birth.
Re:Consciousness is not computation on Monday June 20, 2022 @05:46AM (#31808255)
What if "I" woke up in someone else's body? I'm sure there are movies with this premise, where "someone" wakes up in someone else's body, but they have the memories from their previous body.

But if memories are just physically encoded in the brain, I don't think this scenario makes sense even as a thought experiment.

When "I" wake up in the other person's body, I would have all their memories and none of my previous memories. So I wouldn't even know.

Re:Consciousness is not computation on Monday June 20, 2022 @05:28AM (#31808123)
That is an interesting thought.

It might depend on how you define "person". When I look around, I see distinct human bodies. When I wake up, I'm in the same body as when I went to sleep, so in that sense I'm the same person.

Re:Consciousness is not computation on Monday June 20, 2022 @04:48AM (#31807875)
I think what I was getting at is that it may be impossible to tell from the outside if something is conscious or not. If I can't even prove to myself that another person is conscious, I might have a hard time proving that a computer is conscious.

Maybe I'm the only one who is real, and everyone else are just robots. I'm not sure I'll ever be able to know for sure.

Will an AI ever be able to make correct moral decisions? Or is that something only a human can do?

Consciousness is not well defined. To me, this indicates that we don't really know what's going on.

Re:Why the Ukraine Crisis is the West's Fault (2014) [pdf] on Thursday February 24, 2022 @05:24PM (#30461150)
Ukraine should have kept their nukes or joined Nato or Russia.
The timestamps can be changed by Twitter

It would also be interesting to see what has been cut from episodes which are (partially?) available.
They have censored a lot of his stuff.
Re:Google is wrong. Apple’s iMessage is a failure on Thursday January 20, 2022 @09:02PM (#30018282)
Text messaging on cell phones worked fine until Apple got involved. Now when I send a message to a relative, their response goes to my Macbook.

(I have an Android phone, they have an Apple phone)

Re:Avoid Meaningless Binary Labels on Sunday January 09, 2022 @04:03AM (#29861640)
In my opinion, these are bad names and we would all have saved a lot of brain power if simple and clearly meaningful names were chosen.

The cultural reference in the names preserves the opinion that the choice of byte order is not worth fighting about. But this is an extra piece of information that's not needed.

Moreover, the choice of the word "end" is unfortunate, since it means both "boundary" (as in the 2 ends of an egg) and "conclusion" (as in the end of a transmission).

To make matters worse, they chose to have "little endian" refer to the case where the big (most significant) byte is at the end of a transmission.

Better names might be something like "smallest-first byte order".

Edit: If you are confused, think of it this way:

Little-endian = little end first

Big-endian = big end first

Re:The Rise of Performative Work on Sunday January 09, 2022 @03:12AM (#29861361)
I hope my surgeon doesn't have your attitude.

You need to both do good work and take responsibility to communicate this to your manager.

If you just do good work, but don't communicate it, your manager might not know and won't reward you properly.

If you don't do good work but only "perform", you lack integrity, you're not developing yourself, you're cheating your customers, and you are a drain on your employer and society.

Re:In Response to My first impressions of Web3 on Saturday January 08, 2022 @07:02AM (#29850860)
A central authority can be advantageous, until it becomes dysfunctional or prioritizes its own interests over the interests of those it serves.
Re:Web3 is centralized on Sunday January 02, 2022 @10:56AM (#29769725)
It's about fixing asymmetries of information and control.

It's not necessarily about "centralized" vs "decentralized".

Re:Web3 is centralized on Sunday January 02, 2022 @10:06AM (#29769250)
Many people care about Julian Assange.
The nature of reality is dramatically different from anyone's perception.

Everything's going to be ok.

Amazon seems to be efficient. Maybe they should open a port.

I think they mean that it reduces the complexity that a single developer has to deal with.
Re:A cautionary tale from the streets of San Francisco on Saturday October 23, 2021 @09:33PM (#28974095)
I wonder if this situation is intentionally maintained. Does anyone benefit from it?
Other than the once per year point, these all seem like reasons to make smaller PR's.
Why do they put many unrelated things in the same bill? Smaller, independent pull requests seems like a better way.
