Re:The forgotten joy of soap on Tuesday July 09, 2019 @01:18PM (#20394218)
Some of it could be you're oily because you don't want to be oily.

You wash your hair and get rid of all the oil on the scalp protecting your skin. So your scalp makes as much as it can to replenish. Lather rinse repeat and now you've trained it to always go ham.

I've been washing my hair with just water for a year or so. I'm still oily, but much less so. When I have shorter hair it's on the high side of acceptable. When I have longer hair it's fine - just needs to get pulled down the hairs away from the scalp so it can do its full job.

Re:The forgotten joy of soap on Tuesday July 09, 2019 @01:09PM (#20394093)
There's AOBiome, which makes Mother Dirt, which I use. Anecdotally it works to reduce my smells and need for deodorant and soap/shampoo for body/hair washing & hygiene.

Always wash your hands with soap and water.

Just if you try it, or something like it, do not get excited and jump in head-first like us humans are wont to. And like this[1]. A month is not enough... Like, slow roll 6 months or a year.

Some people are like, "Oh, cool. Stop bathing. That's easy." No. Actually it's more like slowly cut back on detergents. Then slowly cut back on showers. Always be increasing the time and effort used to check if you're a presentable human for society today.

Re:Steve Jobs Resigns as CEO of Apple on Wednesday August 24, 2011 @08:28PM (#2923242)
Smart phones existed before the iPhone; Apple/Jobs just made them orders of magnitude better. Tablets have existed before the iPad; Apple/Jobs just made the first one the market fell in love with.

What new markets have they created?

Now, don't get me wrong... I love Apple. I have a Mac and an iPhone and Cinema displays. I'm jealous of my friends with iPads. Etc. I just don't see any brand new markets.

Re:New in Gmail Labs: Preview Pane on Thursday August 04, 2011 @07:18PM (#2848213)
I thought Google axed Gmail Labs a while ago... Turns out there's more than one Labs in Google, and they're killing off some other one.

Re:UseTheSource: a job board for hackers on Thursday June 16, 2011 @03:44PM (#2662915)
Any chance of adding a 'save' feature? I clicked through from your blog to the board, saw an interesting job or two, and now I either have to email myself the links, or hope I remember when I get home from work.

Reddit has a nice little link below every post that says 'save'. Click it and that post goes into a page of saved links [0] I can skim through when I get home. It'd be nice if you had this too.

Re:Coming soon: make your phone your wallet on Thursday May 26, 2011 @02:03PM (#2588763)
The annoying thing about the chip in my AmEx is that the charge shows up as "Expresspay Blue" on my statement, instead of showing up as the merchant ("Best Buy" or what have you). This throws off my pretty charts and budgets in Mint and has resulted in me reverting to just swiping the card everywhere.

I still have a dozen or so "Expresspay Blue" charges sitting there in Mint, uncategorized, because I can't remember who I paid $12.57 to back in October (or whatever).

Minor annoyance? Absolutely. But if NFC-payment-via-phone has the same issue, you can bet money that I'll ditch it and go back to swiping my credit card.

Today I learned patio11 does design consulting, and is not just the bingo card guy.

Interesting article. Thanks (to both you and Fog Creek) for writing it up!

I'd be interested in the once-a-month cooking. Especially your recipes.
Re:SHA-512 w/ per User Salts is Not Enough on Friday May 13, 2011 @09:46PM (#2546901)
Protecting one part of the system against code/development errors in other bits of the system seems like the sane thing to do. Maybe this guy is in control of the password scheme but not in control of the SQL stuff.
Re:Google Music Service on Tuesday May 10, 2011 @04:15PM (#2533931)
This is what I do.

Now I just need my phone to auto-realize it's in the car and start playing music over Bluetooth or something to the car stereo. Too bad I have an iPhone - if I had an Android I'd be tempted to implement this myself.

Re:Why you get ideas in the shower on Monday May 09, 2011 @04:04PM (#2530004)
The shower is utterly routine for me, but I also never get ideas there. It's sad - I feel like I'm missing out on something.

My best idea generator is the walk away from my desk & to my car at the end of the day. I have solved so many bugs immediately after exiting the office building...

Why are you only taking Vitamin D if you believe "an ounce of prevention's worth a pound of cure"? Shouldn't you be taking a multi-vitamin, at least, in order to hit all the other vitamins & minerals you might be short on?
Re:The iOS weather-app market on Tuesday April 26, 2011 @04:48PM (#2487143)
Does it tell you the chance of rain?

I have a motorcycle; I only have one weather question in the morning - can I ride today? Rain is pretty much the only thing I care about, and I'm on the Florida coast, so "Isolated thunderstorms" is a "no shit, Sherlock" during spring/summer/fall and entirely useless. I want to know if it's the usual 10-30% chance of mid-afternoon rain, or if it's something more.

An alert on my phone ready for me every morning would be ideal. I've found apps in the past that do it, but they always close shop after a few months.

Yep. Quite a few use those same rage faces. Reddit really ought to just implement that themselves and let subreddit mods turn it on or off, since they're getting so popular.
C/C++ highlighting is also a bit underwhelming; it's only coloring constants, comments, and strings. Kewords, precompiler directives, etc are ignored.
Re:Amazon Web Services are down on Thursday April 21, 2011 @02:21PM (#2471674)
Easter is the holiday, and it's on Sunday. I'm pretty sure the Pope doesn't care much what people do the day after Easter (or the day after that).
How many people have been at the last few?
Re:Facebook is Big and Boring on Friday April 01, 2011 @06:12PM (#2398306)
Reddit does this, and it works well. They allows subreddits to be styled as the mods like and give the user an option to disable the custom styling globally. The Reddit Enhancement Suite takes it one step further and allows subreddit specific toggling of custom styles.

Works well for me. I turn off the annoying ones.

Re:Wanted: Software Engineers. Reward: $12,000 on Tuesday February 22, 2011 @06:37PM (#2252121)
Recruiters raise signal to noise ratio? All I ever hear is how they horribly fudge resumes and job posts in order to make applicant and company interested in each other and get their fee.
Re:Chrome 9 Sandboxes Flash and Adds WebGL Support on Thursday December 16, 2010 @05:43PM (#2014164)
I wonder if they'll slow down on the major version now that they've "caught up" to IE...

Re:Hacker Makeover: How We Gave Our Developer Some Style on Tuesday October 05, 2010 @01:35PM (#1760593)
I feel worse on the inside when situations call for a suit.

The best I've felt "on the inside" was back in college, when my wardrobe was a t-shirt, shorts, and flip-flops. I do not feel better inside now that my dress code has been forced up to business casual.

Trying to sneak Reddit terminology onto HN, Alexis? :P

Re:Worlds first 'flapless' plane on Wednesday September 29, 2010 @10:22AM (#1739458)
Off the top of my head: that plane had a jet engine, so they could just route their air lines near the engine for heat, or siphon air from the jet directly. Then just constantly 'leak' some warm air from all the holes on the wing surface when in icy conditions.

Or just electrically heat the metal around the holes, like is currently done for the pitot tube (speed indicator).

Re:Flying Agony Free with Hipmunk on Tuesday September 28, 2010 @05:39PM (#1737451)
I find it annoying that Southwest won't let anyone at their flight schedule data...

Hipmunk is awesome, but... I still have to go over to Southwest.com to find the good deal for me.

Re:LibreOffice tells Oracle to fork off on Tuesday September 28, 2010 @03:44PM (#1736969)
It's nice that Big Names are supporting it, but for it to survive, it needs actual developers who know the codebase. I believe the actual developers are what sandGordon was referring to.
Re:Adobe Installs 1.2 MW of Bloom Boxes—Cheaper Than Grid Power on Tuesday September 28, 2010 @03:35PM (#1736943)
Adobe's burning bio-methane from a landfill, not fossil fuels.
I'm a big fan of them because they're the only ones the legal department at work will allow us to use in our products.

Using a BSD license means you're being nice to developers.

The GPL means you're being nice to users and telling companies/developers to move along.
