Your two sibling comments are currently "Why is the comfort of the aggressor more important than the comfort of the innocent victim?" And "Yes." The assumption that some people in this thread are in favor of violence seems to be borne out.
Re:Identifying Software on Wednesday March 13, 2024 @07:01PM (#39698616)
Having spoken to a some people involved with the project, my understanding is that there's a significant schism between factions "Flakes are unfinished software, and our documentation should not focus on them" and "Flakes are what the majority of the userbase is using, and we should document them". I hope this will eventually get better if Flakes are ever stabilized.

> Modern Luddites can go back to churning their own butter.

The history of the Luddites is actually interestingly parallel to what we're seeing with generative AI these days. The book "Blood in the Machine" talks about this in some detail - there's an interview with the author at https://www.currentaffairs.org/2024/01/why-you-should-be-a-l... that is worth reading, and Time has a piece on the book as well: https://time.com/6317437/luddites-ai-blood-in-the-machine-me...

The sheer iron of a post calling SV out for being thin-skinned manchildren immediately getting flagged on HN. Way to tell on yourself.

I don't believe anyone is arguing that advertising _doesn't work_.
> You treat the walk as the default

Is it unreasonable to treat “moving around with your body” as the default vs “moving around in a $x,000-x00,000 device”?

This counterpoint is also explicitly called out in GP's post:

> You might be thinking "Well that's just him, or people who are weird like him." but it turns out that other people often benefit from the same accommodations as disabled people, only less so. You can look up the term "curb cuts".

Re:Ask HN: Anyone know any funny programming jokes? on Thursday January 21, 2021 @01:17AM (#25856056)
The waitress asked if they would ALL like dessert. If the first logician did NOT want dessert, then they could safely answer "no", because then it would not be the case that ALL of the logicians want dessert. Since they do not answer no, we can assume they do want dessert. The same follows for the second logician. The third (who also wants dessert) has heard their colleagues answer, and knows that if either of them did not want dessert they would have answered no, and can therefore now answer "yes, we would all like dessert".
Re:Do I Need Kubernetes? on Sunday August 16, 2020 @12:25PM (#24179048)
I work for a startup whose product is small (half a dozen servers, if relatively beefy ones) clusters that will be run on-prem by customers, at least sometimes in a low-to-no-touch capacity. Most of our application components are micro-ish services that are run on all hosts in the cluster for either extra capacity or fault tolerance.

We currently run everything on mesos/marathon, but are looking to switch away from it. K8s is kinda the “default” option, and is potentially appealing to some potential acquirers and investors.

But I never really see k8s being talked about in that context of “physical hardware that’s on prem, but not on MY prem.” Is there a reason for that? If we go with k8s is it going to bite us? Does anyone have experience with something like that they could share?

No experience (or affiliation) with it, but I’ve heard some good things about https://ironcast.tv/
Re:Letter from Tim Cook to Apple Investors on Thursday January 03, 2019 @03:21AM (#18813638)
There are a few keepass clients for iOS, but most of them are pretty serious abandonware and don’t support newer features like autofill integration. https://keepassium.com/ is supposed to come out soonish, and will probably take the crown when it does. For now, your best option is probably https://strongboxsafe.com/. No affiliation or experience with either, but strongbox seems to be the favorite for now and keepassium looks like it’ll be better when it’s out.

Nobody upthread of you is arguing that health insurance prices did not go up after the implementation of the ACA. The argument is that the rate of increase has decreased. I don't know if this is true, and don't have data to argue one way or another, but you and the other people in this thread are arguing about different numbers.

Both of these things are true, and an argument for options.

Cards in the US very rarely do.
Re:Apple’s Struggle to Get the iPhone X to Market on Time on Wednesday October 25, 2017 @11:39AM (#15551013)
It does, but if anything that argument is a point in favor of “fingerprint sensor on the back is poor UX”.
This is definitely the case for me. I work at a reasonably large (~5-7000 total employees) company that had a top-down Agile Mandate imposed about a year ago. It’s worked reasonably well, honestly, but there was a lot of chafing initially, and there’s still some resistance. Problems with the process are occasionally solved by abandoning it entirely, with mixed results.

Well, we don't, but would you rather use software known to have bugs or software not known to have bugs?
Re:Updates to our Google Voice apps on Tuesday January 24, 2017 @01:19AM (#13469210)
> Of course, google will let you upload 50,000 songs for free over google music, so even that excuse doesn't hold water, but I'm sure you'll find another reason to complain.

I mean, not OP here, but my music library is ~140 GB, and I don't think it's unreasonable to want to have that available without internet access. I run with a 64gb iPhone, so I'm definitely not the guy arguing for massive SD cards on everything, but I don't think you can say it's totally ridiculous to have a use case for that much storage.

Junior dev here, but 3-4 weeks of vacation would be an improvement over my current 15 days...

And it's also worth noting that the default option, "Mac App Store and identified developers" allows you to run apps from anywhere by right-clicking them and choosing "Open".
Re:Apple announces iOS 10 on Monday June 13, 2016 @08:00PM (#11898774)
Can you not do that? In my experience (including a test just now), speaking that phrase in a natural cadence (no weird pauses) is recognized perfectly.
I mean, to be fair, the only thing I use Facebook for is Messenger, and the Messenger app is actually halfway decent. It caches user names and pictures a little too aggressively, and the new trend of "let's add a row of buttons to the text input box, doubling its size to reduce screen space for features that should be optional" is incredibly obnoxious, but overall it's a decent app. It's obviously not designed for the users, but it's better than the Hangouts app.

This isn't to say that removing the web functionality isn't a dick move and fairly user-hostile, but I don't really understand why so many people act like Messenger.app is an affront to god and man.

If you've got a better suggestion for secure group chats on iPhone, Android, Windows Phone, OS X, and Windows, please let me know! My family uses telegram extensively, but I'd love to replace it with something better if there's anything with similarly good UX on all of the platforms we use.
