Re:RSS Rant on Thursday October 27, 2011 @05:44PM (#3165727)
Outside of those of us that love Google Reader, I have to imagine that Search Engines and numerous content aggregators are ingesting RSS feeds. Removing them is going to degrade your distribution immensely and likely affect your SEO.
Re:RSS not dead, just misunderstood on Tuesday September 14, 2010 @09:09AM (#1690366)
I run a sports news aggregation site. Before RSS existed it was very difficult to manage all of my sources because they would change so often. I now aggregate several thousand sources by myself and this wouldn't be doable without RSS.
Hard Work + Luck. The right circumstances let Gates have access to the right technology where he could then put in 10,000 hours of hard work etc.
Re:Why Lawyers Don’t Run Startups on Thursday May 27, 2010 @03:24PM (#1384671)
The owners of the startup I worked at were lawyers and it worked out pretty well for them as the company was bought for nearly $200 million. We did e-discovery and they knew the space well and had a lot of good contacts in the industry that got us in the door where we would have had no shot otherwise. I can't say I thought they did everything right by a long shot but they way it turned out for them its hard to argue otherwise.

It sucks yes, but working at a place where there are a groups of people that commonly access the database to do operations that cannot be done from the front end you definitely want procedures. They use different tools for a variety of tasks and when the business logic isn't in procedures its very easy for them to break things and they have and do.... Our DBA however wants all procedures for all access which I find to also be an extreme example for the reasons you mention as not all data needs this level of control as its just simple CRUD operations and tables they should never change anyways.
Thanks for the article. Do you have any insight on the best way to protect yourself from what seem like mostly frivolous suits that can come out of no where. For a contrived example say Valleywag which is banned from HN decided to sue PG for defamation or something similar and won a large verdict. Whats the best insurance to hold against HN/PG going bankrupt?

Ask YC: Aquisition Advice

My partner and I run a sports website. We were recently contacted by a major sports network that is interested in integrating our functionality into their site. Their are a few ways a deal could play out, with one scenario being a potential acquisition. They have asked for a valuation and if we would want to become full time employees. We've never really thought about a valuation for our...
