I don't know.

This itself seems like propaganda to blame the unrest on TikTok or foreign countries, rather than fundamental issues within Spain or Europe generally.

It can both be true that TikTok was a factor in the increased property damage and that Spanish citizens are unhappy and ready to protest. Or that 130 people were ready to do property damage and there also, TikTok videos.

What would "seeing riots coming" look like?
Re:What shall I teach my son? on Monday October 26, 2026 @10:33AM (#50244440)
What was possible? For dads to learn how to do all of the things moms traditionally do when raising children.

"be a mom"

Meal cooking, diaper changing, dish washing, laundry doing, bottle feeding, late night soothing, bed time put-downs, morning time get-ups, logistical organization of things like meal planning and doctor visits, monitoring the baby while its awake with 100% attention, etc

In the later years its things like school activities, crucial life conversations, the logistics of taking them places, managing making sure they're doing their homework, being a trusted advisor for them to confide in, etc.

Many modern Dads are fulfilling more of these roles, but its easy, especially when Dads are working, for dads to hide behind their workload and not learn how to engage with a lot of these kinds of tasks as a matter of course.

We will have to do something different" is weak sauce.
I'm not sure I understand. We don't have to like it for it to be true.

It's not like the modern system for university tenure track is some fundamental human right.

Pythagoras did mathematics one way, Newton another, and the kids in 2050 another.

The wheel turns, and we all got to turn with it.

Re:Switzerland. Block by block. At 1:1 scale on Monday October 26, 2026 @07:28AM (#50242004)
Don't overcomplicate it. There is no one true way, for Minecraft or for anything.

    I don't get it
Because it looks cool to see the real world in blocks. And if it looks cool, it is cool, as they say.

actually use a search engine again
I like how the search engine, something that also just came into being, is the metric here for "normalcy".

Reminds me of the quote:

Anything that is in the world when you’re born is normal and ordinary and is just a natural part of the way the world works.

Anything that's invented between when you’re fifteen and thirty-five is new and exciting and revolutionary and you can probably get a career in it.

Anything invented after you're thirty-five is against the natural order of things."

Yes, this is wise advice.

Too many husbands get slightly behind in the first few months and never catch up to doing their share.

The best way to feel comfortable, confident, and close with your children is to "be a mom".

Like anything, you don't know how it works until you do it.

Re:What shall I teach my son? on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @08:01AM (#50179474)

    overly anxious generation
    I feel
You clearly have a lot of "feelings", but do you have any facts? On any of whether children / young adults are actually more anxious, on how parenting has changed, and whether those two things are related?

    I've mostly seen
    manipulation
As you've said, perhaps the problem is that you seem to live in a space where all you're experiencing is manipulation, and not that supporting your children and teaching them the skills needed to navigate and regulate their emotions is "pampering".

Most children and young adults I interact with closely these days seem to be far more emotionally mature than my cohort or my parents' cohort.

But that's also just my anecdata.

The term super intelligence makes me cringe so hard, you can just use the regular term.

You don't have to give any more legitimacy to Trump's inane ramblings than they already get.

Re:My old job feels distant now on Friday October 16, 2026 @11:59PM (#50127797)
Why does everyone keep framing this as if this is a decision this person is making?

This is what is happening to the industry. It's a fact of life. A new technology has disrupted the method through which software is created. There's no going back and there's no pretending we can continue not using it.

You either adopt the tools now and have trouble finding a job later or have trouble finding a job now.

Why would we want to PREVENT that!?

We should just be paving the way for the necessary social safety net so they don't have to work and won't starve.

Not throw the baby out with the bath water. Who WANTS to have to work!?

Re:No Man Is an Island on Friday October 09, 2026 @05:03PM (#50026513)
I don't disagree that the community of software engineering will diminish. What was once a skilled trade is now an unskilled trade.

But I think the intellectual activity will just migrate somewhere else, once all the dust has settled.

People who are intrinsically motivated will continue to be intrinsically motivated and new communities will pop up around new domains.

Coding only came into being 70 years ago. It's not some fundamental human institution.

We're all just going to have to adapt. The wheel turns.

Re:Will AI kill us all on Thursday October 08, 2026 @07:57AM (#50004763)
Watching the FUD and doomerism take root in the discourse and in our collective psyches really helps me understand so many other periods in history.

We really can't help but let our imagination run wild when given the opportunity.

Reminds me of Y2K.

Are there going to be myriad material challenges we will need to face as this incredible technology unfolds?

Of course. Economic displacement, education reform, etc.

Are they existential, though? I don't see it. These are "standard fare" problems for post Enlightenment societies to deal with, even if they are real challenges.

We already have serious tangible existential threats we should be focusing on between things like climate change, ecological collapse, population decline, and pandemic risk.

I wish we could stay focused on the problems that are real instead of getting distracted by the problems that are imagined.

My IDE is the MR diff.

Since the spring, I haven't actually needed to write the code, just look at it and make sure it's good.

All that I do from inside GitHub or GitLab.

I've had a JetBrains subscription forever and this is the first time I'm considering not renewing it.

    started as
The theory of effective altruism is fine. A sort of pragmatic utilitarianism that includes the future.

But the practice of effective altruism and the problematic influential figures who are vocal effective altruists is what is bringing all of the negative attention.

Re:Coding Is Not Solved on Monday September 28, 2026 @10:51PM (#49887494)
What do you want you hear?

I haven't opened my IDE in months. I only skim the MRs to make sure there are no glaring issues.

Success is a good set of skills, a good up front design for your feature, architecture docs in your repo, lots of automated linting, unit testing, AI MR reviews, and black box e2e testing.

I doubt I'll ever _have_ to write a line of code again.

All of my time is spent juggling 5-20 agents, mostly planning and responding to the agents escalations.

GPT 6 Sol / GPT 6 Luna are my bread and butter and spec-driven design works great.

Like 75% of the small issues that used to take me a few hours or half a day in 2021 take me like 15 minutes to ship now start to finish, and I can ship them while doing other things.

They are a blight on every new little town, stealing land that could go to literally anything else that would benefit the community more.

In nearly 100% of cases, they are owned by some rich schmuck somewhere that's just trying to "cash flow".

I hate them and I hate the culture that produces so many people that own them.

Throw your stuff away people! Patronize businesses that make the world more interesting!
