It’s ok when they steal the entire internet and everything not the internet they can get their hands on but distillation is bad.
I love California for these laws because even though their jurisdiction is technically limited, it makes no sense for the companies to not make the changes available nation wide.
Re:Google Plans to Invest Up to $40B in Anthropic on Sunday April 26, 2026 @12:34AM (#47907377)
So Google gives Anthropic money which anthropic then uses to buy compute from Google. How does this end up screwing over regular people?
At this point windows should be classified as a public utility and regulated as such. Microsoft has turned the most popular operating system on earth into an ad riddled and dysfunctional joke. Satya Nadella destroyed what would’ve been a stellar legacy as CEO of Microsoft by allowing all this crap to go on, chief among them is the war on local accounts.
They might want to reopen it, oil prices spiked to $120 a few hours ago.
Re:Ask HN: Please restrict new accounts from posting on Monday March 09, 2026 @01:09AM (#47305100)
No, Reddit is insufferable to use precisely because of this, try posting to any subreddit with a new account and your post gets removed because it’s too new or doesn’t have enough karma. Blanket moderation strategies like these make the UX horrible for new users and slows the platforms growth and reach.
Predictions markets need to be outlawed, no exceptions, just erased from existence.

Humans like pretty things, that’s why I have an urge to pet bears and tigers even though I know they’ll kill me.
Re:Apple introduces the new iPad Air, powered by M4 on Monday March 02, 2026 @02:12PM (#47222618)
I have the M3 iPad Air… I won’t have to replace it for at least 4 years because it’s stupidly powerful but both of its hands are tied because of iPad OS. Apple needs to get serious and make a version of MacOS for the iPad otherwise these upgrades are meaningless for most users.
Can this shit cake be undone by a federal judge? No way a merger like that doesn’t violate antitrust laws.
All EVs will naturally be more reliable than ICE cars because there are a lot less components that can break!
Can we please file the idea of AI judges under the “fuck no” category.
Re:Ask HN: Do you still physical calculators? on Saturday January 31, 2026 @07:09AM (#46835919)
I tried using my WolframAlpha in high school but I had no idea what I was doing and it felt way too complicated, but in college it is a game changer and I still use it to do school work. Totally agree!
Re:Ask HN: Do you still physical calculators? on Saturday January 31, 2026 @07:06AM (#46835894)
FCC license exams I am assuming?
Re:Ask HN: Do you still physical calculators? on Saturday January 31, 2026 @07:02AM (#46835861)
That’s so cool, I wish something like this existed in the states. That’s the kind of trust local communities thrive in <3
Re:Ask HN: Do you still physical calculators? on Saturday January 31, 2026 @06:59AM (#46835825)
lol I did accidentally a verb yes, quite a frequent occurrence with me!
On iOS you can get free background play with Youtube App by putting the video in picture-in-picture -> locking the screen, -> going to control center and hitting the play button. Don’t let Google know!

Ask HN: Do you still physical calculators?

I’ve noticed that most physical scientific and graphing calculators are easily outdone in terms of performance, capability and ease of use by the likes of Desmos and the default calculators on OS’es like the iOS, Android, and Windows. It kind of makes me wonder whether people still use physical calculators from Texas Instruments, Casio, etcIf you do, I’d love to know why and how it is...

Re:SpaceX in Merger Talks with xAI on Saturday January 31, 2026 @03:31AM (#46834651)
It’s a damn shame that SpaceX is being entangled with the absolute trash that is X and xAI.
Re:Microsoft forced me to switch to Linux on Wednesday January 28, 2026 @12:40PM (#46798746)
I’ve been using a Mac for a about three years now, but every once in a while I use my old gaming laptop to play some games and every time I am reminded of how insufferable windows has become, using it feels I’m dumpster diving and the dumpster is asking me to sign into my Microsoft account. Apple gets a lot of shit for how they do things, but no one can deny that once you’re properly established in their ecosystem, it’s a phenomenal experience.
Re:Ask HN: How do you use 5–10 minute gaps productively? on Tuesday January 06, 2026 @10:51AM (#46513849)
Have a cup of coffee in solitude and let your mind run wild.
Not really, they just treat it the intersection as if it were ruled by stop signs. It’s not always easy to keep track of who goes next but overall people can handle themselves pretty well in those cases.
Re:Uber starts selling ride/eats data to marketers on Monday December 08, 2025 @09:20PM (#46200538)
So many freaking apps do this crap, Apple needs to implement a categorization system for notifications and allows users to choose which categories of notifications to allow. Anything other than essential notifications needs to go in the useless crap category.
Except the five eras in the article are based scientific observations of how the brain changes overtime where’s yours are based on having a snide attitude.
States should step up and preempt this approval with a ban.
Re:Workday to acquire Pipedream on Wednesday November 19, 2025 @10:05PM (#45988422)
I love when the jokes write themselves, pipedream indeed lol
So Rolls Royce makes cars, engines for planes, and nuclear reactors?

Ask HN: Is Computer Science still a good choice?

I’ve been asking myself this question a lot lately because I’m pursuing a CS degree but I’ve been second guessing my decision because all I ever hear about now is people either getting laid off or new graduates having a hard time landing entry level roles, never mind the AI of it all not that I believe it is a feasible replacement for actual programmers but at the same time it’s hard to tell if...

Re:Türkiye will not sell rare earth elements to the USA on Monday November 03, 2025 @12:15PM (#45801506)
If they don’t even have the refining infrastructure built yet what do they have to offer the US ( or any other nation) that we can’t get from China? Rare Earth isn’t actually rare, what’s rare is the ability to refine it into pure elements.
I think the chat interface plays a huge role in this because LLMs are more than good enough to make you feel like you’re talking to another person, so coupling that with a user interface that was up until a few years ago pretty much exclusively used to talk to other people is a little problematic… it is essentially hijacking the emotional response of talking to a real person through texting.
