There's no way AirBnB is going to try to IPO after the Facebook debacle. They must entice someone to acquire them. The higher the valuation the more enticing. Pump it up!
"the other"
Pretty much spot on. There is no shortage of people who can do the jobs. That is certainly not the fear being balanced (=Joe Candidate can't do the job). Rather, the fear is that Joe Candidate is not "like me", and that he might change the culture. He is "the other".
But this is not as silly as it sounds. It makes a difference who you have to work with everyday. It's not just about work. In many cases, monkeys could do the work. (In other cases, only a very few people could do the work.) What it's about is being surrounded by "your kind of people". Work environment.
This doesn't just apply to startups.
So being a good recruiter is not just about finding qualified people, it's about understanding "cultural fit" and the particular pyschology (however irrational it may be) of your clients.
The point is the title is useless. It tells you almost nothing. That blog is a joke.
They have like 300 servers and who knows how many cores.
What kind title is this? The target High Scalability reader must be presumed to be a complete fool.
.txt can be imported into Word to make .doc.
.html can be imported into either Excel or Word.
.ppt? No comment.
.csv, .txt and .html are much easier to work with across different operating systems.
While this may not be within the stated KS rules, as an idea this sounds useful.
The main obstacle with many overseas factory-made cheap electronics projects is indeed "how big should we make the first run?"
Is this not a problem we need to solve? Look at the Raspberry Pi.
For the entrepreneur, maybe "let's manufacture something awesome" requires pre-orders. Maybe it requires committments.
We need some better way to connect consumers, entrepreneurs and factories.
Maybe KS is not it, but isn't it something we should look toward?
