As usual Zuckerberg is talking out of both sides of his mouth. On one hand he's releasing open-weight, commodity grade models while gating their frontier models behind facebook apps. You'll be able to have your cake, but won't be able to eat it.
Re:Why Most Gun Laws Aren’t Backed Up by Evidence on Thursday February 16, 2023 @01:47PM (#34823622)
That’s nice, but what are they shooting? Peas? Water? I’m curious.
Re:Turkey blocks Twitter after the earthquake on Wednesday February 08, 2023 @02:43PM (#34713738)
Nonsense, if you tolerate disinformation you get more disinformation. Countries that fail to address it will fall and the world will be worse off because of it. The right to free speech does not include the right to a free platform or free promotion.
Not all jobs require hiring smart people, in fact for some jobs, hiring a smart person is a liability, law enforcement for instance.
This helps explain why Cannabidiol may help with excessive sleepiness in hypocretindeficient rats.

Compared to the aircraft it replaced, it's actually safer and much more capable.
What do you mean by "pretend ecological issues?" Climate control isn't an ideology it's a necessity created by failed policies. Climate change doesn't care about your political or economic ideology.
Workers should be entitled to a minimum wage, business expense reimbursements, employee benefits, rest breaks, and all the other benefits afforded to employees under California state law. AB5 is a good law and should be implemented Federally.
A recent poll suggests that seventy percent of Americans think enacting new gun control laws should take precedence over protecting ownership rights. So a larger portion of the country does agree with this.
It seems pretty likely that a vasculatory inflammatory virus that also infects the immune system will have lasting, long-term damaging effects on your organs and cardiovascular system.
Considering the amount of fraud and theft in the crypto community, a little regulation could be a good thing. Normal people want good regulations to protect them from bad actors. That's the point of good governance.

"Totally justified" given the costs and consequences of the alternative.

Communism works great, it just doesn't scale. Finland guarantees every adult citizen free education, housing, heating, electricity, water, Internet, healthcare, and food. They also provide extra funding for hobbies and irregular needs like furniture and appliances. In Israel, communal settlements called kibbutz hold all wealth is held in common and reinvest all profits in the settlement.
Cheaper but deadlier doesn't sound like a very good tradeoff when talking about infants.
Re:America COMPETES Act of 2022 passed House and Senate on Wednesday March 30, 2022 @02:14AM (#30852000)
Definitely not an ownership stake, but perhaps a royalty on equity. For every dollar in equity sold or transacted the government receives a royalty payment of some percentage.
Re:Capitalism Is Ruining Science on Thursday March 24, 2022 @11:45PM (#30798450)
I think you're confusing science with supply-side economics.
You're understanding of biology is rather outdated. There are several X & Y chromosomal variations that are rather common but frequently undiagnosed. The X & Y Variations include 47, XXY OR Klinefelter Syndrome, 47, XYY (Jacob’s Syndrome) , 47, XXX (Triple X). There are also several variant disorders which include Tetrasomy X, Pentasomy X, 49, XXXX, 48, XXXY, 48, XXYY, and 49, XXXXY. So no, it's not quite simple.
Refineries are the bottleneck in the US, not oil supplies. The world doesn't need Alberta's dirty-ass oil sands oil.
Not providing a platform for or promoting scientific misinformation is not the same thing as censoring scientific misinformation. The problems of science will not be solved by promoting pseudoscience or scientific information. That's just making a problem that is bad and making it worse.
I hear what you're saying, but bait is the best way to catch fish. If you want to go fishing for racists, it's best to use race bait.
Re:Intel removes Xinjiang references from shareholder letter on Tuesday January 11, 2022 @09:54AM (#29892085)
Who do you think taught them how to do that?
This is why antidepressants should only be used during periods of crisis when a person is at risk; in my opinion, for no longer than 3-6 months at most, after which they should be tapered off and transitioned to a more sustainable long term treatment modality.
Re:100 years of whatever this will be on Thursday December 02, 2021 @10:18AM (#29417158)
I think that eventually, anything that can be run by a DAO will be run by a DAO, just like with automation, any process that can be automated will, eventually, be automated.
Re:The sticky issue of consent in street photography on Wednesday November 24, 2021 @07:15PM (#29336824)
Privacy, in a legal sense, only exists within a very narrow domain. Whenever you are in public, whether you are there to be seen or not, you are seen and therefore have no right to privacy in that domain.
Re:Why Women Get So Many Autoimmune Diseases on Monday November 22, 2021 @06:05PM (#29312682)
High levels of estrogens have a regulatory and inhibiting effect on many immune response components, while low levels can be stimulating. It's similar to other T cell-mediated autoimmune diseases, such as MS and RA; estrogen protects against psoriasis.
Not likely, cutting global greenhouse gas emissions back when it would have made a difference might have.
Poor governance might be making the matter worse, but climate change is ultimately driving the problem.
Re:Ask HN: What mental models do you use everyday? on Sunday November 21, 2021 @12:44PM (#29298092)
The 10/80/10 rule. 10% of the things are harmful 80% of the things are agnostic 10% of the things are helpful.
You're definitely going to want to make a police report.
