Re:A free Omarchy course: 25 modules and a capstone on Friday October 23, 2026 @11:09AM (#50210380)
Can you explain why a normal linux user would want to use Omarchy and take your course? I haven't installed Omarchy yet but what are the benefits to this significant investment of time. Thank you for putting the course out there free.
Re:Bob Cringely Has Died on Sunday October 04, 2026 @01:32PM (#49955950)
It was his kids running a Mineserver Kickstarter. If you fund a bunch of kids on Kickstarter never seeing a finished project are very high. Cringely and his kids obviously made a good faith effort.
Those cities don't want to be associated with crime. The show is not exactly flattering to Memphis, Atlanta, etc

HN just had a "Whoops we undercounted plant C02 absorption by 40% for the last 40 years" post so I would say the errors mostly go in one direction.

38 seems young to quit. Is there another story here?
It's the marginal dollar that contributes profit so the marginal employees are actually the most profitable.
They're complaining because they run human written sites but they've been deranked because Google can no longer tell human content from AI. Google is now privileging sites like Forbes, USA Today and Reddit. Google wants to rank their sites but it can't distinguish their content from the ocean of AI content. They have a legitimate gripe, that Google is no longer favoring niche content sites.

Wow. I didn't think anyone was actually doing it but now I think it must be going on.

Maybe "ad targeting info" is more accurate

Wouldn't it be easier to get mobile tracking info about M&A bankers and figure out which companies and websites they're visiting?
Re:"Comedy is search" – theory on how jokes work on Tuesday October 01, 2024 @11:59AM (#41710140)
If you are going to make a video about how comedy works you have to begin it with a joke and then use your theory to explain that joke. I don't want to hear your theory unless you give me something to think about first.

Brownlee is such a mystery to me. The #1 rule of Youtube is show energy, show enthusiasm. Brownlee is like if Urkel were given a sedative and told to review the latest iPhone
Re:Intel is on life support. Can anything save it? on Thursday September 12, 2024 @06:10PM (#41526170)
Of course it does. Do you think Nvidia likes being dependent on TSMC?
Re:Intel is on life support. Can anything save it? on Thursday September 12, 2024 @05:56PM (#41526010)
Microsoft bought shares of Apple when it was on its knees. The foundry business doesn't compete with Nvidia.
Re:Intel is on life support. Can anything save it? on Thursday September 12, 2024 @05:48PM (#41525929)
If Intel is critical to the US industrial base, why aren't Nvidia and Apple stepping up to support Intel? What is the point of $3T national champions like Apple and Nvidia if they ship the industrial base overseas.
Does anyone else use a cheap MP3 player and RSS feeds or am I the last dinosaur?
Re:Don't use "enshittification" use "platform decay" on Tuesday August 27, 2024 @08:35AM (#41366854)
The wikipedia article for enshittification is only about platforms because the word applies specifically to how networks grow and are monetized. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enshittification

Don't use "enshittification" use "platform decay"

Cory Doctorow's attempt to brand "platform decay" as "enshittification" is polluting the english language with an ugly and coarsening word. Instead of the self-exemplifying "enshittifying" use "platform decay" which is immediately intelligible.

Platform decay is more accurate becasue it's not about general worsification, it's about platforms specifically. I realise that "platform decay" doesn't sell books but it's perfectly usable in ordinary speech .
You realize that "enshittified" is self-exemplifying? I don't want to come across words like "shit" in normal language. It pollutes my pristine mind. If you don't want the world to be "enshittified" don't use words like "enshittified."

THe NK developer will think, wait, I'm making a fraction of what I'm actually earning, I will smuggle in a Starlink receiver and set up a bank account in China and work for myself. This is how Communist regimes end.
Re:EasyOS: An Experimental Linux Distribution on Thursday June 20, 2024 @06:56AM (#40737201)
How much faster / smaller is this than a minimal Linux distro like Xubuntu?
A Grok phone would be cheap to develop, would generate lots of data for his AI, and would fit with his strategy at X (everything app). It's not that far fetched.
Re:Apple Vision Pro review: magic, until it's not on Tuesday January 30, 2024 @06:49PM (#39197696)
Is the DOD buying these? I can see soldiers using these as enhanced night vision goggles. No need to look at a map with a flashlight or bring a computer.
It could mean the astronauts are currently dropping the bag, which is not true. The ambiguity would be resolved by using past tense.
